Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ireland United and Free From: open mike Date: 12 Jan 23 - 12:13 PM The Irish Brigade Lyrics And Chords In [G] Armagh and in Derry, in [C] Antrim and in [G] Down, the [C] north gale is [G] rising to [A7] bring down the [D7] crown. Then [G] shout the old war cry, and the [C] blood's running [G] high. We'll [C] fight for true [G] Ireland, for [A7] today we shall [D7] die. The [G] days of the slavers will no [C] longer[G] be When [C] Gaels stand [G] united, they'll [A7] always be [D7] free. [chorus] [C] Ire[D]land [G] united, [D] Gaelic and [Am] free. [C] Land [D] of my [G] birth, in [D] freedom we'll [Am] be. From New York and Chicago, in Sydney and in Perth The Gaelic storm is growing; it's sweeping across the earth, We'll serve no queen or cremlin, in freedom we shall dwell. If they try to step in England's shoes, we'll see them all in hell. There's no force on this earth can ever stand the tide Of a nation united, the truth on its side. The banshee's mournful whisper of an old lost battle scene, A true Gael's blood is calling, "Preserve our ancient green," Is there any mind so shallow, is there any heart so black, Can watch his county's body tore apart on England's rack? Remember now in Belfast, brave men will fight and die, To keep that shining vision alive and burning high. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ireland United and Free From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 12 Jan 23 - 02:35 PM Of course the rhetoric about Gaelicness as being the summation of being Irish has always been a dangerous falsehood which has done a lot of damage in it's time, and runs completely contrary to the notion of Irish unity. Sounds to me as if they are making the same mistake today in Ukraine, pretending that those Ukrainians who speak Russian are somehow less Ukrainian. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ireland United and Free From: pattyClink Date: 13 Jan 23 - 03:54 PM The Wolfe Tones recorded a song they apparently called "Padraig Pearse", am pasting from one of the lyric sites, the last line of the chorus is 'when Ireland's a nation, united and free'. And it is a haunting last line, has stuck with me many years too. In Dublin town in nineteen sixteen a flame of freedom did arise A group of men with determination caught an empire by surprise Through the streets our men were marching They rallied with their hopes and fears And the Enda boys came searching for their leader Padraig Pearse Chorus: The poet and the Irish rebel, a Gaelic scholar and a visionary We gave to him no fitting tribute When Ireland's at peace only that can be When Ireland's a nation, united and free On Easter morn he faced the nation from the steps of the G.P.O And read aloud the proclamation, the seed of nationhood to sow But soon the word had spread to London of an insurrection there at hand And the deeds of Padraic Pearse was set about to free his land For five long days the battle rages, for five long nights the battle wore We will watch as Dublin City blazes and see our men fall through the floor No Ireland's proud of her effort for her cause we fought with pride But to save more life and to save our city, we make our peace with McFainis cried Kilmainham Jail in 1916, they brought young Pearse to his death cell and they tried him as a traitor to shoot this man who dared to rebel He only tried to free his country of the shackles of 800 years When dawn did break on that May morning they shot our Leader Padraic Pearse |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ireland United and Free From: pattyClink Date: 13 Jan 23 - 04:07 PM There seems to be a few errors in the text, so those who know the song please add fixes to it. In the first line, the meter is sung so the word is more like 'vision'ry'. The third verse seems to be the most garbled, pretty sure third line is not "No Ireland's", etc. Also, who wrote the thing? The lyrics sites on the net only care about who recorded it. |
