I read somewhere that this is the year of the
Black Water Rabbit.

Unfortunate implication, though, to put
Black + Water together like that.

The Chinese zodiac is actually a 60 year cycle. Each cycle of 12 years is associated with an element so it is really a Water Rabbit.

I overlooked another detail:
it is a
Yin, rather than a Yang, Water Rabbit.

And one source states that
in Chinese tradition,
the color of water is black -- hence, black rabbit.

I was once told that a more accurate translation is, "Year of the Small Domestic Animal" (which could cover Cat and Rabbit, presumably). The informant was in earnest, though of course she could have been misinformed.
