Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ah Goote Noodle Soup (Josef Marais) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Jan 23 - 11:32 PM I'm glad people were able to find it. I tracked down the LPs here and that one wasn't in the collection. In the meantime, I did find that there is a Marais and Miranda website. Admittedly, it's an ancient looking thing, but the content is what you want. Discography |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: GUEST Date: 27 Jan 23 - 03:57 PM JM: But the courting-- Rosa De Miranda: They don't know the courting, anyways. JM: No, that's true. RM: I mean, not the South African courting. JM: Well I'm glad you've qualified that. Yes, this is a little unusual, because if a young man calls on a young lady, a lighted candle is placed on the table between them, and that candle is the -- let's say -- the criterion for the length of the interview, to put it that way. That means to say, by the time the candle burns out he should be gone out, too, the size of the candle varying with the popularity of the young man. That's the intro to Johnny With the Bandy Legs which is a South African song - M.G. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: cnd Date: 26 Jan 23 - 08:20 PM I regret to inform you that I was mistaken -- there's just too many PaDutch words and phrases that I just simply don't know. I'm more than happy to PM the mp3 to anyone who thinks they can take a stab at it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: cnd Date: 26 Jan 23 - 08:11 PM Interestingly, here's a different recording from the one I'm transcribing with a different intro: link. Here's a transcription of that one, with no attempt to get the lyrical section at the very end, under the assumption it will be materially similar to the other rendition. Italicized words are spoken. JM: But the courting-- Rosa De Miranda: They don't know the courting, anyways. JM: No, that's true. RM: I mean, not the South African courting. JM: Well I'm glad you've qualified that. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Jan 23 - 07:49 PM This query started me down a rabbit hole looking for the list of albums from my father's estate. He also liked Marais and Miranda and I think had all of their albums. My list must be printed somewhere, I don't have it that I can find in a computer file. I'll keep looking for the album to see if there are lyrics or liner notes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: cnd Date: 26 Jan 23 - 07:41 PM You can hear the original song here, when the play bar has about 126 minutes left. (Or I can send you an mp3 of it I made to help transcribing it... scrubbing 3 minutes at a time makes transcribing hard). I'll try and write those lyrics out instead of that one, since the audio fidelity is a lot better. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Goote Noodle Soup From: cnd Date: 26 Jan 23 - 07:28 PM Confusingly, there are two albums with the exact same name, one of which contains the (original version of) the song you're searching for, and one which doesn't. Marais And Miranda In Person (Decca DL 9026) has the subtitle "Actually Recorded at Fullerton Hall, Chicago, Illinois, February 2, 1955." Funny enough, this album is available on Youtube in full. The album which you're searching for is Marais And Miranda In Person (Decca DL 9027) , which is subtitled "Actually Recorded at Fullerton Hall, Chicago, Illinois, February 7, 1955 -- Goote Noodle Soup is song B2. Anyways, I can take a stab at transcribing it. |
Subject: Goote Noodle Soup Can Vonders Vork-ah From: keberoxu Date: 26 Jan 23 - 06:32 PM I grew up with the Marais and Miranda live concert performance LP, which included this song about a mother giving her daughter the "facts of life" lecture. On YouTube I do not find Marais and Miranda's version. Luckily, I found a different live recording by someone I don't know, do any of you recognize the person in this video?? Can anybody get through the Pennsylvania Dutch accent to make out the lyrics of Ah Goote Noodle Soup? Many thanks! Ah Goote Noodle Soup (Can Vonders Vork-ah) |
