LITTLE WHITE BULL
(Lionel Bart, 1959)
As recorded by Tommy Steele

Once upon a time there was a little white bull,
Very sad because he was a little white bull (little white bull).
All the black bulls called him a coward, just 'cos he was white.
Only black bulls go to the bull ring; only black bulls fight.
When he asked his mama if a little white bull (little white bull)
Ever had a chance of turning black,
His mama said: “You silly little bull, you're a pretty little bull; you're my little bull,
So please don't ask me why, little bull; you just ain't black.”

But this did not satisfy that little white bull (little white bull).
He was an exception to that little white rule (little white rule).
Every day alone in the meadow he'd find things to charge
Till one day he really imagined that his horns were large.
Bold as brass right there and then the little white bull (little white bull)
Quickly found the nearest road to town,
And people said: “What a funny little bull! What a floppy little bull! He's our little bull.”
He marched along, the proud little bull, and hit the town.

It was the day of the bullfight; all the town were there,
Waiting to see the famous matador.
Trumpeters sounded a fanfare: “Tara tadda ra tadda ra!”
Out from the throats of the crowd came a mighty roar.
Into the ring to the shout of a great “Olé” (Olé)
Came the parade all prepared for the mighty fray:
Matadors, and picadors, and toreadors—
And who do you think as well?

Trotting right behind them came the little white bull (the little white bull).
How they laughed out loud to see a little white bull (little white bull)
Trotting round the giant arena with his head up high,
Till the matador in the center caught his tiny eye.

Charging right up to him went the little white bull (little white bull),
Charging twice and charging once again.
The matador cried: “Toro! little bull,
You're not a little bull; you're a brave little bull.
You're gonna be a great little bull, the best in Spain.”
Then the crowd all shouted: “Toro! little bull,
You're not a little bull; you're a brave little bull.
You're gonna be a great little bull, the best in Spain.”

So if you've got a little bull that's a white little bull
It's quite possi-bull that it might be the bull
That's the best in Spain.

Then the crowd all shouted turret little bull
Your not a little bull, your a brave little bull
Your gonna be a great little bull
The best is spain!
So if you got a little bull
Thats a white little bull
It's quite possible
That it might be the bull
Thats the best
In Spain

Is There a hidden meaning to this song?

When I was at primary school, the same proto-fascistic bunch of little seven-year-old girls who had forced me to be "Fred" when they performed "seven little girls, sitting in the back seat..." in front of the class, much to my severe mortification, also had the party piece "Little White Bull" in their armoury. God, I was damaged...

I was 8 years old when this released, the youngest in the family, and my Mum had just taken up a part-time job. One of the luxuries we acquired, with the extra money coming in, was a record player. "Little White Bull" was my very first 45 rpm record purchase.

You should be crediting the writers whose modern copyright work is being reproduced here.   One of the co-writers was actor Mike Pratt - (he was Jeff Randall in Randall and Hopkirk. Apart from acting he was a musician, playwright and songwriter. The song was written by Lionel Bart, Mike Pratt, and Tommy Steele (under a pseudonym). Steele gave royalties from the record to a kids' cancer charity. The song was nominated for an Ivor Novello award.

Flippin' 'eck. It was a novelty pop song released in 1957. I've listened to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Brahms for the last fifty years. Lickle White Bull and Sitting On The Back Seat are the soundtracks of my infancy. They have their place and are not awful. So give over, miserable Guest.

A hidden meaning? I don't think so!

According to Wikipedia, "Little White Bull" is a song by English rock and roll singer Tommy Steele, released as a single in November 1959. It was included on the EP Tommy the Toreador from the film of the same name in which Steele also starred.

When reviewed in Melody Maker, both sides were described as "easy-to-listen-to numbers, especially Little White Bull, which has a Children's Hour flavour about it". Reviewing for Disc, Don Nicholl described "Little White Bull" as "a jingly novelty ballad with Tommy using his Cockney accent for the title phrasing".

Steele's royalties from the single's sales were donated to the "Variety Club of Great Britain fund for a cancer research unit for children". The song peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart and it was awarded a silver disc in January 1960 for 250,000 sales in Britain, apparently Tommy Steele's first Silver Disc.

"I wuv you, I wuv you, said the little blue man". The whole music business is racist to the core!! Let's just condemn all songs that mention '.....col**r'. I know, let's ask the bulls what they think!

I am not sure why the Lyric Add. heading has Lionel Bart, as sole author when it is a three way copyright. As I stated earlier Mike Pratt, and Tommy Steele (under a pseudonym) are co-authors and composers along with Bart.

Max Bygraves, Ken Dodd, Des O'Conner etc., all made a comfortable living out of this sort of kitsch. Millions of simple people (the folk?) loved it.

I don't think folkies are in a good position to criticise;)

The Gnat & the Bull The Æsop for Children

A Gnat flew over the meadow with much buzzing for so small a creature and settled on the tip of one of the horns of a Bull. After he had rested a short time, he made ready to fly away. But before he left he begged the Bull's pardon for having used his horn for a resting place.

"You must be very glad to have me go now," he said.

"It's all the same to me," replied the Bull. "I did not even know you were there."

It's amazing what lurks in those depths. Sometime back at a singing session someone contributed a twee little kindergarten song & I knew it! tho I can't recall it now.
