Neat sharing, John! I would especially have enjoyed being able to watch how she played banjo up close.

This was the first song I heard by her on that mix tape the fellow made. Imagine you've just heard Dead Kennedys, Ice T, etc, and suddenly this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlvWmN1JfxM

Like the way the Anthology of American Folk was described by some of the revivalists, when I heard it it sounded to me like something that had to be from the far distant past, just the style of that song, and there's nothing else like it anywhere else by anyone else, not even herself, that one. It was the ultimate hook, for me, into wanting more, and wanting to *know* more.

Little did I know but she was still living at the time, though you couldn't find any information on her beyond the 70s at all from the Internet then, it was if she'd just evaporated at a certain point and that was it. I think it was pretty much at the point of her obituary that you could once again start finding post "then" info. Of course, here she was even dropping by at Mudcat before then.

On further thinking of where it was I met the little group that sent me all of her discography up to then, it might have actually been a USENET group. All that I recall for sure was that it was an old school place like this or that, and the one who did the mailing to me was in Germany.

When I ran a club in London way back when, I booked Hedy, and she gave us a wonderful evening of song. Afterwards I told her I had enjoyed the evening, and had always loved her stuff, and she gave me a big kiss. Didn't really want to wash my face for days afterwards. Lovely lady, don't know about most folks, but I miss her.
Somewhere I have an old Sing Out with a piece on her, and a pic of her in pigtails (braids) from when she was a young banjo picker, and it mentioned her father Don West, the poet.

What a strange thread to discover.

Well, my little Hedy sharing is that here in my home county, which is in a county adjoined to Hedy's home county, there is a very distinct local music legend whom is mostly sort of punk, folk, rock, blues based, and has been prominently around since the early 80s at least. He is quite the musical well, and has often through the years made mix tapes and CDs and given out to friends. Somewhere along the line I got ahold of a couple of them that had a couple of Hedy songs on each, at differing times. "Fragments", "Drowsy Sleeper", "Little Willie", and "Letter from Down the Road".

I had no idea who this angelic sounding voice accompanied only by delicate banjo sounds was (mixed in on a very genre eclectic compilation) and asked him, and was surprised to hear she was a folk revival person who had come from the next county over. I wanted to hear everything I could.

At around that time, you couldn't get anything Hedy, it was all out of print. I think I actually found this place in a search and might have even joined up, but definitely not sure. All I know is that somewhere on the Internet after lots of Googling Hedy, I found a small group of enthusiasts and one of them from Germany sent me CD-Rs of Hedy's entire catalog, including some I've never seen mentioned, a live show in Germany from 1968, another from Chicago 1978, I think in a university setting, and another with some folk festival performances.

They told me welcome to a very small club that "has everything". I wonder if that was indeed here at Mudcat, it kinda feels like it might well have been.

Old Times and Hard Times was also one of the Topic LP's;I too wish they would release the other. The two Vanguard albums were issued on CD by a Japanese company a while ago: I managed to buy them from the late lamented Tower Records.

Spotify and Amazon.com MP3s have Old Times and Hard Times and Ballads. Old Times and Hard Times is Folk-Legacy CD32, and is available on CD from Folk-Legacy.
I couldn't find any other Hedy West albums on CD. I wish I had bought the 8 reissues during the short time that they were available.

Folk Legacy reissued "Hard Times in the Country" on CD. You can buy it from them or on Amazon. Her two Vanguard albums are available (with bonus cuts) for download on itunes. A DVD release of an episode of Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest TV show from the mid-1960s features a few songs by Hedy. May she rest in peace. I got to see her in concert in the early 1980s and am sad I never got to see her again. I wish Bear Family and Topic would release her old albums and that the unreleased material listed in the thread above would actually get released.

Any new info on the infamous mystery where-the-heck-are-they official reissues of the Hedy West CDs? Seems this thread evaporated awhile back and I'm desperate for this material. I've got the better-than-nothing reissues from the "evil Hedy" but want the Real Thing. I'd also like to find the Japanese two-fer and that unobtainable British two-fer from Phantom listed on the Amazon site.

Somebody, anybody, HELP!

The thing is I've been able to find nothing from Hedy or her music from the past 2 years besides this failed reissue of cds. I am a conspiracy theorist and suspicious of anything that seems "fishy". I understand your evil Hedy West theory now Abby, but still I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Hedy commissioned and sold those cds. If this kid had sold them by himself how could he have gotten the music rights for instance? If he had done it by himself the record companies would sue him for whatever money he had made. I think that something has happened to Hedy which is left to be investigated.

Uncle, I think it's "An Offer you can't reuse." We're trying to reissue some older songs here.

Ethan, it's exactly that "posting things in her name to sell the cds" that created the Evil Hedy West. He wasn't her, you see. He was him.

Personally, I'm not a Brewster, I'm a son of a sea cook.

(Never mind - it's an even older reference not worth explaining but still strikes me as funny as hell if I do happen to remember it.)

Ok everyone, I am going to use my middle name instead of Joe for my membership so you won't think I am the *evil* Joe Offer/Hedy West.

I talked to Hedy via AOL Instant Message and she said she is still working on the CDs although there have been delays. I also asked her about the amazon.com listings. She was unaware of them and said she would check with amazon about them.

Also, it appears to me, based on what I have put together that there was no *evil* Hedy West. Hedy explained that her teenage neighbor whom she worked with to release the music did a lousy job as Dick mentioned in one of his posts, for instance posting things in her name to sell the cds.

That is all for now.

That's odd, Dick. I have several e-mails direct from her stating clearly that it was her youthful neighbor and that she took minor legal action to have it stopped. Still, she did offer to repurchase any of the CD copies that were bought and were unsatisfactory. So little harm was done whatever the case.

GUEST,Joe Offer: As Joe Offer posted, it can create a bit of confusion when two people post under the same name. The "Evil Hedy West" referred to the impersonator posting under her name (plus a reference to a classic "Star Trek" episode which isn't worth explaining.) Later, the Real Hedy West posted under a different name so as not to confuse people. Now we learn from Dick (always trustworthy and, thank God, there's only one of him) that she was posting anonymously under an several alias' in order to conceal her false identity from her Real one. I think I've got that right, now.

I certainly have no interest in pushing attention on to you. Unless, that is, you really are either the Evil or the Real Hedy West. After all, I don't know anything about you at all unless, on the other hand, you really are Joe Offer, whom I know from Mudcat for some years and much respect.

I think that explains it

As I understood it, there was no Hedy West impersonator. Hedy herself announced the CDs; she later foind that the person who did the actual production did a lousy job, and so she withdrew them from the market. That simple. No conspiracy. THis is pretty much first hand: I spoke to Hedy, and CAMSCO purchased seven of the CDs for retail sale.

I can't believe this nonsense. I am going to say once and for all that I am not the "Evil hedy west", whatever that means. I hope you are glad that you have pushed me away from the hedy west fan group. You can all go to hell for all I care. I was interested in Hedy West, instead now when you search for Joe Offer on the internet, you will find you questioning my identity. Maybe you Abby Sale are the "Evil Hedy West" who is trying to push attention onto me... I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.
Well, Joe, we have had some problems with impersonation here, and this particular thread has to do with somebody who allegedly impersonated Hedy West and sold poor-quality copies of her recordings without her permission. Several people who posted to this thread got burned by this impersonator, so they naturally are suspicious of impersonation. Joe Offer is a well-known name at the Mudcat Cafe, since I have editing responsibility. If somebody else named Joe Offer joins this particular thread, he's likely to be greeted with suspicion - that's just human nature.
But this is a thread about Hedy West. If you have anything to say about her, feel free.

Dear Abby,

I ordered all 8 CDs which turned out to be a great value for only a little over 100 dollars. I forgot how much I loved her. I am waiting for her to remaster more of her CDs so I can order them. Hedy gave me great service, I recieved the CDs in a well packed box within 4 days of my ordering of the CDs (that may be because I live in PA, near Larkspur Records) In conclusion, I would definetly recommend purchasing CDs from Hedy.

David Shore dav667@aol.com

As noted above, the Hedy West CD's were marketed without her authorization. She will release recordings through a reputable firm in the near future.

I bought both Hedy West CD's from Camsco. The music is excellent. She tells a story well with her singing, and she's a delight to listen to. Her song interpretations are intelligent and interesting. I'll probably take the time to learn a number of songs from these CD's - they're real classics.
I think, though, that before you spend $36 for these CD's, you ought to know that that you don't get a whole lot for your money. The CD's are an amateur production, with paper CD labels and booklets produced on an inkjet printer, and no CD booklet information other than a list of the songs. I'll bet the CD's were recorded from LP's, because there are quite a few pops and crackles on the recordings. The sound quality is quite good, but it could have been filtered a bit more without destroying the sound quality.
My main complaint is that the CD's are so short. "Best of" has 9 cuts and is 24:35 minutes long. "Pretty Saro" is a little more reasonable, with 16 cuts, 38:17 minutes. Both albums could easily have fit on one CD - now THAT would certainly be worth $18. I'd like to support our esteemed veterans like Hedy West by buying more of her recordings, but I don't think I will. I think it's good for us to give her our support, but she should respond by giving us more value for our money.

Hedy is the daughter of the late Don West, labor organizer and radical poet of the Appalachians. Her family came from the north Georgia mountains and passed many ballads and songs down through the generations. In the 60s, she became quite a well-known performer, singing traditional songs and ballads and accompanying herself on banjo. She recorded then for such labels as Vanguard. Folk-Legacy arranged with Topic Records (English label) to release Old Times and Hard Times in the U.S. When the LP was sold out and a repressing on vinyl unwise, we continued making the music available to the public as one of our "custom" cassettes. We are delighted to learn that Hedy has now made it available as a limited edition CD. It is a wonderful collection of traditional songs superbly presented. I urge you to give it a listen.

Among the folkies of the 60s and 70s, Hedy is probably best known as composer/arranger of "Five Hundred Miles," a song that became a major hit for PP&M (I think they were the ones who first popularized it).

Sandy

I think it's worth pointing out that "Welcome to Caffe Lena" is not a Hedy West album. Hedy does not make this clear in her e-mails or in the song list posted above. It's a compilation of various artists recorded at the Caffe about 30 or so years ago. Hedy sings one song ("Whore's Lament").

As I recall from copy of the LP on Biograh:

Michael Cooney- Lena, Won't You Open Your Door- Michael Cooney

Bill Vanaver- Cluck, Old Hen

Paul Geremia- Elegant Hobo

Bob & Evelyne Beers- Bells Of Cheyenne/The Blackbird

Louis Killen- The Blacksmith

High Level Ranters- The Clog Hornpipe

Rosalie Sorrels- Come On Friend

Patrick Sky- Giovani Montini, The Pope

Bottle Hill- Blue Birds Singing In The Blue

Hedy West- Whore's Lament

Utah Phillips- Daddy What's A Train

Lena Spencer- Sweet Little Cafe In A Square

Frank Wakefield- Tarry Not

I trust that Hedy actually has the rights to issue this album. I mentioned this album to one of the above artists and they hadn't heard it was available.

Hedy West posted to a thread recently. I can't remember which one and I can't find it with forum search, but she gave a link for obtaining her CDs:

Any more information you can give us about it, Abby? Name of company? it sounds interesting to me, too. I see that CDNOW has nothing listed, but Amazon has a recent release of Pretty Saro, which they say is "on order" (usually means the release was delayed). Dick Greenhaus doesn't have anything at Camsco yet, but I'll betcha he will. Folk Legacy has a Hedy West cassette, but no CD.

The best female American singer in my view. Sorry don't know anything about this. I have a Japanese CD of her two Vanguard LP's which is superb. Perhaps it's that. could it be the three excellent LP's she did in the UK? Dr John

I have an e-mail offering new re-mastered Hedy West CD's direct from Pennsylvania. I think she's superb so this is well-received by me.

Anybody know anything about it?
Note:
Hedy West contacted us in August, 2000, and stated that she did not give her authorization for these CD's to be sold in this manner. Her recordings will be released through a professional recording company in the near future.
