Sad news to relate. Joe Mulheron singer, songwriter and publican formerly of Belfast but lately of Derry (where he ran Sandinos) died today of a heart attack. Joe was formerly of the group known as 'Men of No Property' and he composed many songs, some of which have entered the tradition. My sincerest sympathy to Joe's friends and family. Farewell Joe. Fergus Russell

Joe has lived in Derry since the mid-seventies, which is when I met him. Some of his friends from Belfast would visit quite often (or used to when they were alive). I would say Joe was a popular man in the town even before he established Sandinos Bar (Joe worked as a quantity surveyor). Joe composed political and satirical songs, but he was also a follower of traditional song in general.

The funeral is tomorrow; very simple, leaving the Mulheron residence at 1.30 pm for interment at the city cemetery at 2 pm https://safelyhome.com/death-notice/mulheron-joseph/

There is a short article about Joe on the Hotpress website, with a relay of tributes from social media (mainly Twitter) https://www.hotpress.com/music/tributes-paid-to-joe-mulheron-folk-singer-and-founder-of-sandinos-bar-in-derry-22967942

I didn't know him well but enjoyed some lovely sessions in in Cavan, Leitrim & Roscommon at various weekends. Lovely man & great songwriter.

I fell about laughing on hearing Joe's 'Free State Adjudicator'. If you don't know it, it's about an Ulster singer's problems in a singing competition south of the border, and told my pal Jackie Boyce about it.

He amazed me by saying he was the unfortunate singer being subjected to all the prejudice in the south about the lovely Ulster singing style!

Thanks for all that Joe & commiserations to his family
