Most of you know of Alan Arkin from his movies but I first came across him as one of the original Tarriers. As The Tarriers evolved, he was replaced by Clarence Cooper and Eric Darling was replaced by Eric Weissberg.

The following is excepted from Wikipedia.

With Erik Darling and Bob Carey, he formed the folk group The Tarriers, in which Arkin sang and played guitar. The band members co-composed the group's 1956 hit "The Banana Boat Song", a reworking, with some new lyrics, of a traditional, Jamaican calypso folk song of the same name, combined with another titled "Hill and Gully Rider".[33] It reached No. 4 on the Billboard magazine chart the same year as Harry Belafonte's better-known hit version.[34] The group appeared in the 1957 Calypso-exploitation film Calypso Heat Wave, singing "Banana Boat Song" and "Choucoune". Arkin was a member of The Tarriers when they recorded "Cindy, Oh Cindy" which went to the top of the charts.

From 1958 to 1968, Arkin performed and recorded with the children's folk group The Baby Sitters.

Alan had a cousin Steve Arkin who was also part of the New York Washington Square scene and was a good five string banjo player on the old time scene. Sadly he passed a way a few months back but can be seen on You Tube.

Thanks for starting this - I had the thought last night when I heard he had died that his roots were in music, moving to acting later. I read or heard an interview about that fairly recently. In the meantime, a reliable place to find older interviews is on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, where he was a guest several times. (If you search on him he is also the subject of other interviews, such as one with the writers of Little Miss Sunshine.

I wasn't much familiar with his music career but loved him in films.
