Subject: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 21 Jul 23 - 11:04 PM It was video taped and I have watched archived footage of "The Kitchen Debate"- 24 July 1959 with Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. There are press mentions of them singing "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech" since this was the only song they both knew incommon. I have spent the week looking and viewing, reading and find nadda. It was considered a technological break through with color TV and video recording. Dynamic personalities. There must be an audio or video of them both singing: that is what I seek. Sincerely, Gargoyle LOC has segments ... but no singing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: cnd Date: 22 Jul 23 - 09:25 PM Working from my cell phone at the moment, so I'm not at my best, but I've found no evidence of this claim predating the publication of Robert Wallace's Dress Her In White and Gold: https://archive.org/details/dressherinwhiteg0000wall/mode/1up?q=Khrushchev |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: cnd Date: 23 Jul 23 - 08:16 PM Nixon did not mention singing a song with Khrushchev in his autobiography, RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon. Still no evidence of Nixon and Khrushchev singing together. Closest I've found to this event is from July 1959, when a group of seven American governors (Leroy Collins, Robert Meyner, George Clyde, Luther Hodges, Robert Smylie, John Davis, and Stephen McNichols) toured the Georgia Polytechnic Institute (the one in Eastern Europe) and broke out into song. Perhaps the two stories were conflated? (The Atlanta Constitution, July 6th, 1959, p. 1) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jul 23 - 08:57 PM Here's the kitchen debate itself, with subtitles. In general, it seems surprisingly casual and friendly. I wish Putin could be in such good spirits. And hey, Khrushchev really rocks that white hat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZZslqbqpoc CND, I gather that the singing was dubbed in over the actual conversation. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 23 Jul 23 - 09:08 PM THANK YOU ! I will post secondary/third references of the duet. To this thread. A dozen or more. None audio/vis.t Sincerely, Gargoyle I was looking for my father's version of "Ramblin' Wreck" when "I fell down the rabbit hole." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: cnd Date: 24 Jul 23 - 08:02 AM Joe, I watched that whole video and never saw a moment where the audio appeared to be dubbed over, and never heard them sing, unless I missed it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Jul 23 - 09:15 PM Same here, cnd. It must have been after they had another couple bottles of vodka. Khrushchev was terrific in this encounter. Nixon was his usual rigid self. Too bad. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Jul 23 - 09:30 PM Should I post under 1,000 characters (like google translate)? I will break my previous attempts into pieces, like Nikita K suggests for jaw movements. Sincerely, Gargoyle I am close ... but still no cigar. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Jul 23 - 09:48 PM First two of several: Sources noted. The song has become extremely famous over the years, so much so that Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev sang it together in 1959 at their meeting in Moscow." (https://traditions.gatech.edu/gtsongs.html) "The song was later sung by the Georgia Tech Glee Club on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1953, and by Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev during the 1959 Kitchen Debate." (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramblin%27_Wreck_from_Georgia_Tech) Sincerely, Gargoyle I understand. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Jul 23 - 09:53 PM Part 3 & 4 "Then-Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev sang the song together when they met in Moscow in 1959 to reduce the tension between them during the Kitchen Debate.[3][4][34][35] As the story goes, Nixon did not know any Russian songs, but Khrushchev knew that one American song as it had been sung on the Ed Sullivan show." (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramblin%27_Wreck_from_Georgia_Tech) "Georgia Tech's beloved fight song gained unprecedented international exposure during Richard Nixon's 1958 Vice Presidential visit to Moscow, Russia. In an attempt to break the Cold War ice, Nixon and Soviet premiere Nikita Krushchev sang the only song that the two leaders both knew: "The Ramblin Reck from Georgia Tech." The two leaders of the world's strongest nations sang the song for a group made up largely of high-level advisors and security personnel; but, thankfully, a secret service agent captured the historical event on film." The mood was quite tense, so Nixon suggested doing something to lighten the mood. For some reason, they chose to sing a song together. “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck” was picked because Khrushchev had heard it on an Ed Sullivan sing-a-long during a previous trip to the United States, and Nixon knew no Russian songs." Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargpyle Date: 24 Jul 23 - 10:12 PM There are MANY outside resources: I will need to use a proxy to access - French video from Moscow 1959 (https://www.arte.tv/en/videos/090602-001-A/mysteries-from-the-archives/) Nothing at British Pathe. Sincerly, Gargoyle This dark/joy filled rabbit hole began with Carlsberg brewery/Russia, taxes and watering down "Old Speckled Hen." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: cnd Date: 25 Jul 23 - 11:45 AM Thanks for sharing all these links, gargoyle, especially the archived ones. I am yet to be convinced, however, that any source of the fact does not originate from Wallace's book, published in 1963. I suspect there is a source for the claim in the Robert B. Wallace Collection (MS083) at Georgia Tech, but I would have to wait til I'm in Atlanta to find that. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 26 Jul 23 - 04:38 PM I was ready to cry "BOGUS/Urban Legend" until I found this through YANDEX - Russian search engine. https://content.time.com/time/subscriber/article/0,33009,825793-1,00.html It appears there were multiple opportunities for them to sing together. Sincerely, Gargoyle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nixon/Khrushchev Duet From: GUEST,RJM Date: 27 Jul 23 - 03:42 AM Did they ever sing send in the clowns Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, You in mid-air, Where are the clowns? Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around, One who can't move, Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns? Just when I'd stopped opening doors, Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines No one is there Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear I thought that you'd want what I want Sorry, my dear! But where are the clowns Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career But where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns Well, maybe next year Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Stephen Sondheim Send in the Clowns lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc |
