I'm in the throes of putting together a few illustrated talks on Irish traditional music and song for some visiting students. The plan is to use Powerpoint and I'm on the lookout for suitable graphics - pictures of instruments, relevant historical figures, music notation etc. I can scan in material from my own collection but wonder if anyone can suggest sites from where I might "borrow" suitable GIFs and JPGs?

Regards

Let me know what you are looking for and I will check my own collection, as well as others in the area. Sounds like a great project.

All the best,

Big Mick

Mick
The group is a mixture of assorted Europeans taking courses in the Technology Institute in which I teach (other things!). They take a course of Irish Studies and I'm to do about 4 - 6 hours on Irish Traditional Music and song. Basically, I plan to try to cover an outline of the history, instrumentation, tune patterns and significance - with lots of examples and a field trip or two! So I could do with some historical images, photos of the music in different contexts, pictures of instruments, famous players and so on. As usual, I'll accumulate far more than |I need - and try to pick a decent selection.

Jo
Lovely images. Now if I could find an Irish equivalent..... Thanks

Regards

Dear Martin,

I lost all my bookmarks when my C drive crashed recently, or I'd have more sites for you than this. You can try here and here.

I also have several graphics files of the type you might find useful. Please let me know if I could email these to you. My email address is on bbc's Mudcat Resource Pages. I would be happy to help in any way that I can.

Soodlum's Irish Ballad Book has a few 'old Irish people with their instruments' photos. Is this the sort of thing?

Here are a couple of more sites that I found. Click here for a site that has photos of tinwhistles and an old picture of the site owner's great grandfather playing a whistle. Click here for an Irish artist's site that might have a couple of pictures you could use (don't let the fact that he's a Cubist put you off).

I have a old drawing of an Uilleann Piper, but not the rights, but for the limited use you are proposing, it may be OK, I can e-mail it to you. As to feild trips, are you in NYC? If so, I can suggest a few places, and if you want some in class stuff, my band may be able to drop in to start things off for you. I do a yearly concert for NYU students in the English department, when they are studding medievil ballads. Contact... InOBU@aol.com, Our band has Uilleann pipes, mandolin, wooden concert flute, fiddle, songs the whole catastrophy...

I'm a long way from NYC! About dead centre of Ireland, to be reasonably exact. I would appreciate a copy of the piper.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions so far - the file is building nicely.

Ah Martin:
Dead center? Roscommon?, O Carlolin country? I would rent a Dan Dooley Van, and run them all out to Doolin for a night! Who needs graphics when you have the very thing itself,
Well, wishing I was there, band and all,
Larry
PS I will check to see if you have email listed in the file, if not, email me at InOBU@aol.com, and I will send you the graphic. All the best again

Athlone where, at the moment, we are surrounded by water in the worst floods for forty years!
There are indeed lots of sessions to bring these guys to. The idea of the lecture/workshops is to try to get them quickly past the stage of looking for ONLY Pete St. John songs (nothing wrong with ....) and rigid hand-clapping that destroys any rhythm the musicians try to employ. For this year I'll stick to recordings, chat, Powerpoint and a session or two. Hopefully, if its a success, I can move on next time to bringing in some live musicians etc. I'm also (slowly)planning a website.

A chara Martin:
I used to build currachs with Monty O Leary in Maharees, Dingle, sounds like you need a currach as well as some graphics!
I have the piper drawing scaned and ready to send, when I know where. Huge thick chanter, and an over-the elbow base drown, as well as some great looking brogs on the old boy...
Sorcha Dorcha Ballad and Ceile Band . Click the blue clicky thing to have a look at our band...

Martin,

Áine suggested Lesley Nelson's Contemplator site. I just want to courteously request that you ask permission & give credit to the sites if you borrow graphics. Lesley's site is one of the best traditional music sites I know of on the web with the added bonus/*joy* of having Barry Taylor's Tunebook there as well, so apart from the courtesy of asking permission it would be nice to know that her site is publicised to interested people. That obviously goes for the borrowings from other sites, too of course.

Okay, polite request mode switched off, we resume normal transmission.

I don't know if the Ceolas site has any useful graphics. I think it has lots of links though.

I don't know if this is anything like what you could use, but when I was thinking about redesigning my site I found tons of celtic stuff at Celtic Web Art (http://hometown.aol.com/Cyrion7/celtic/index.htm). It has a lot of links too. It's celtic rather than music, but that might be o.k. for some background or bullets - and for the web site eventually.

For my graphics I used the covers of the Lester Levy collection. It's all public domain (except the harp) and you'd be welcome to use it. I don't recall seeing anything else there that would be appropriate - but you can browse there by cover so you might want to take a look (if you have a fast connection, that is!)

And thanks, Helen, for the plug and suggestion! A few people took the graphic of a harper I used to have. I took it off my site because it was from an Ossian publication - and I still feel guilty every time I see it around! On the other hand, it's the one time I'm sort of glad I'm not credited!

Lesley N. (aka the Contemplator)

I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you are looking for, but what about checking out the irish bands' websites for pictures and artwork? Try www.clarevoyants.com and www.oneeyedfiona.com They're Phoenix irish bands that have some fun pictures and a few graphics on them.

Here's some stuff:

Celtic Knotwork Graphics
Celtic Web Art
Clip Art Searcher
Internet Baglady

The last two are general clip art places, but are easy to use and have good links. Many times if you search for "Holidays/St. Pat" you'll find clover buttons and lines. Almost all my links have moved in the last six months, so a search engine search should be done. I couldn't find my favorite site, "How to Draw a Celtic Knot."

I think one of the Microsoft sites has some nice clover backgrounds. The About.com clip art site has good links.

Good luck,
Mary
