I think it's well-enough known that Dominic Behan wrote "Come Out Ye Black and Tans". however, I'm trying to figure out if he sung it; I'm sure he did live anyways, but I can't find any extant recordings. If it is recorded, it might be under the name "Come Out and Fight", as according to Wolfgang in this thread, that's what it's called in his book The Singing Irish.

It would be quite disappointing if there's no recording by the man himself of probably one of the most-recorded Irish folk songs ever!

As it happens RTE just started a new series on the background of popular songs and Come all you.. was the subject of the first episode:

Aistear an amhran

I don't know if it will provide an answer to your question though, I haven't watched it yet.

Is this a different song than "Bold Black and Tans"? It's featured on a 1966 compilation album, Rebellion At Easter

I heard this sung by a 20something last October at Wellington Folk Festival. Hadn't heard it for years before that.

@cnd, Thompson
That seems to be a different song. The one I'm talking about is sung by the Wolfe Tones here: https://youtu.be/78ATHfSwf-A?si=2Uuktxoh2nx0ut2F

That's an interesting question about Brendan Behan and "Black and Tans"! It always fascinates me how songs and their origins intertwine with historical events. Speaking of things I've been diving into lately, I've really been enjoying playing Drive Mad. It's surprisingly addictive for such a simple concept – just trying to get your car to the finish line without utterly destroying it! It makes me think about how different creators approach challenging their audience, whether through a song with a powerful message or a physics-based puzzle. What other historical songs do you find yourself researching the background of?

Strange, indeed! I've got three of his albums - Easter Week and After (1958), Easter Monday 1916 - Songs of the IRA (1958) and Down by the Liffeyside: Irish Street Ballads (1960) - and none features this song. All I can find are the Wolfe Tones recording and one by Paddy Reilly on Songs of the Irish War of Independence - A Commemorative Collection (2020).
