So how many Mudcatters sneak Mudcatting time in at work? I m'self am feeling particularly guilty today - all Mudcat and very little else. But not SO guilty that I'm gonna quit! Callie

Sorry: should have posted it as a BS thread. Callie (still at it!)

Which were you thinking of quitting, Mudcat or work?

I don't consider it cheating if I do my Mudcatting on my lunch "hour" (usually about 20 minutes) but I am a music teacher so I loftily justify my time here as "research"! I'm careful to avoid BS threads that might be misconstrued by the web police, tho!

If I were a boss and found one of my workers on this site I'd be a darn sight more relieved than my local council who found great wodges of downloaded porn that had obviously been acquired during work time and was being passed around the council system during work time.

Sites like these bring a ray of the outside world, of life, hope and joy into a cube farm, and can impart a great deal of knowledge and information. They also help boost morale, and a little of that goes a long way to making a happy department. Spreading a laugh is better than spreading rumour and dissent.

Yes, Liz, but if you were the boss of an up and coming porn enterprise, would you be concerned if you caught you workers downloading old folk songs?

Morale is not a consideration at my office. I no longer access any non-business sites at my work computer, because it is strictly forbidden at any time. (I came home today for a lunch break, so I'm not violating this policy). At work, they have remote access to our desktops and monitor them regularly, just to make sure no one is getting any "outside joy in the cube farm."

Maybe the title of this thread relates more to what corporate life does to employees, rather than what employees do at the office.

Guilty as charged, I'm afraid! :-) But I do try to keep it down to reading it once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

Praise the powers that be I have a job where I am not scrutinized; although I may be scruted in other ways! Iguess the notion is that work environments by design are meant to de-humanize, so going back to a well of humanity like MudCat is counter productive, eh? Might spark some original thought, and then where would we all be?

I work in a corporate environment; but no one says anything about my web surfing activities, so long as I do my job...my bosses know I have a lot of down time and don't mind if I read the newspaper or work on my freelance stuff...officially we are not supposed to use our internet access for non-professional stuff during work hours; as for breaks, I guess it is okay. maybe I am lucky. We just went through a big merger; hopefully this policy will not change...

i agree with whoever said the real issue is what corporate and strict work environments do to employee morale...

We used to have a policy where we could do some web surfing on our lunch hour or after hours. It was understood that this was good for morale and stress relief and familiarized people with the technology. However, we went through a "big merger" and we can no longer even use our PC for personal documents on our lunch hour, much less access non-business sites on the internet. And don't be sure sure they aren't watching. It's big business now to develop and install software that can peep.

Now I really do have to get back to work!

My work PC has been crashed all day, and my colleagues have commented on the basketfuls of work I've done today, much more than usual. They've all cleared off now (7.15pm in Blighty), the box is fixed, and I'm rewarding myself by talking with you.

The trouble is I can't have the box turned off all day, as I watch the agricultural futures markets on it, but keep zapping between Chicago and Philadelphia.

It's a small company and the boss is pretty laid back, and the employees are cut a little slack to do private surfing. I'm probably the biggest (ab)user but the job still gets done.............. well, the piano lid hasn't come down yet.
