Can anyone please help with the correct title and lyrics? The first line starts "seven years have I spent in galway city," and the chorus is somethinh like "Golden dreams are all I have to offer."

Doesn't sound familiar. Any more info, Iain? Where did you hear it? Did it sound contemporary or old? Who sang it? Where? It all helps!

Regards

Thanks for the response Martin. I think the song could be semi contemporary. It's tempo is waltz time amd I heard it some time back on a sean wilson compilation with just one verse and a chorus, and unfortunately cannot remember more than a snatch of it. P.S. apologies for posting my request twice, my computer lied to me and said the connection timed out when i first posted my request.

I'm intrigued by the title, and I certainly hope someone can come up with a tune and the lyrics. I have to plead ignorance, however, on who Sean Wilson is/was. Can you please inform me, Iain?

Sean Wilson is a popular irish balladeer for want of a better description. Would be similar to Daniel O'Donnel or Foster and Allan.

I haven't given up hope yet, Iain. Somebody's got to know this song. Are you sure you've given us all the information at your disposal?

Have managed to dredge up 4 lines.
seven years have I spent in Galway city
Seven years of happines and pain
For I loved a lady from the mountains
Though I knew we'd never meet again
    CHORUS
Golden dreams are all I have to cling to
    ...................................?

I have no idea of who wrote it or when. The lyrics remind me of Percy French type material.

Poem - 'Golden Dreams'

Seven years I spent in Galway City
Seven years of happiness and pain
For I loved a lady from the mountains
Now I know we'l never meet again
She had eyes like pearls from the ocean
And she moved as graceful as a fawn
But she loved her hils of Connemara
And her heart was anchored on Ben Bawn
Golden dreams are all I have to cling to
Golden memories of Galway Bay
-Retired Farmer, Athenry
Where I met sweet Mary from the mountains
And she stole my foolish heart away
Often times when shades of night were faling
Hand in hand we'd wander through Salthil
Now she's gone and left me for her homeland
But in dreams I picture Mary stil
I often hear her gentle whisper
In the breezes blowing from the sea
But I know it's just imagination
For I know she never thinks of me.
Golden dreams are al I have to cling to
Golden memories of Galway Bay
Where I met sweet Mary from the mountains
And she stole my foolish heart away

from a google of

"Seven years of happiness", "golden dreams"

Poem -
GOLDEN DREAMS
Author: ??

Seven years I spent in Galway City
Seven years of happiness and pain
For I loved a lady from the mountains
Now I know we'll never meet again

She had eyes like pearls from the ocean
And she moved as graceful as a fawn
But she loved her hills of Connemara
And her heart was anchored on Ben Bawn

Golden dreams are all I have to cling to
Golden memories of Galway Bay
Where I met sweet Mary from the mountains
And she stole my foolish heart away

Often times when shades of night were falling
Hand in hand we'd wander through Salthill
Now she's gone and left me for her homeland
But in dreams I picture Mary still

I often hear her gentle whisper
In the breezes blowing from the sea
But I know it's just imagination
For I know she never thinks of me.

Golden dreams are all I have to cling to
Golden memories of Galway Bay
Where I met sweet Mary from the mountains
And she stole my foolish heart away

The above--no author cited--is beautiful and begs for a melody. I'd dearly love to find out who wrote it and get permission to sing it.

Sean Wilson has an album by that name with the song "Golden Dreams" on it as well. However, I can't get a sound file to make sure that it is the right song. Perhaps this will twig with someone who has his album.

From the words:
"But in dreams I picture Mary stil
I often hear her gentle whisper
In the breezes blowing from the sea"

my mind tends to stray ...

But in dreams I picture Mary's still

I often hear its gentle whisper
In the breezes blowing from the sea
promises of just a 'snifter'
of poteen fresh made for me.

See the vapours gently rising
Smell the woodsmoke, feel the thrill
Of those pleasures most surprising
That we get at Mary's still.

It's strange how my mind wanders at times! :)
Nigel

Many thanks for all the responses. As you can see from the dates, I had not checked back on this thread in many years

The thread title reminded me of a silly ditty we used to sing at school, camps etc.

Mary from the mountain glen
Seduced herself with a fountain pen
The pen broke and the ink ran wild
She gave birth to a blue black child

And they called the bastad Steven,
They called the bastard Steven,
They called the bstard Steven
'Cause that was the name of the ink.

Golden dreams are all I have to cling to
Golden memories of Galway Bay
Where I met sweet Mary from the mountains
And she stole my foolish heart away

Seems to scan to part of "Things"
Memories are all I have to cling to
And heartaches are the things I'm talking to.
When I'm not thinking of just how much I love you
I'm thinking of the things we used to do

Cheers

Nigel
(I must listen to the original of this, I might 'work-up' the fragment I created earlier!)
