The second volume of songs from Gypsies and Travellers is to be published in the next few days. Clive Boutle has sent me a link for advance orders and I thought I would pass it on to you.
The book contains a considerable number of the songs I collected on the Marton Moss near Blackpool from the Lee/Wilson/Gorman families of Romany Gypsies, and various songs we picked up at Stowe Horse fair, and from Travellers in various counties over the years. There are also songs collected by Gwilym Davies and other modern collectors, and a section of stories, from Peter Optical (Monk) and other story tellers I have encountered over the years,

The songs have been chosen to demonstrate the musical continuity of the song tradition within the Travelling community and to complement the historical songs published in the original volume, A Secret Stream, in 2021.

The songs have been selected by Nick Dow, and many come from his own collecting activities undertaken in the 1980s, as well as from collectors like Doc Rowe, Mike Yates, Ken Stubbs, Paul Burgess, and the late Gwilym Davies, among others.

The volume also includes dance tunes, stories and songs in Anglo-Romany Cant, as well as well-researched and key informative notes by Steve Gardham.

While we're on, we have already started on our next volume which will be of songs collected in Yorkshire. They will be selected from collections that are out of print and some unpublished. About half will be from the Hudleston Collection, and the rest from Ruairidh Greig, Paul Davenport, a few unpublished Kidson, possibly some from the Leeds Folklife Collection, and my own collection in East Yorkshire, from the long out-of-print An East Riding Songster.

Amazingly the first run of Secret Stream Vol.2, is nearly sold out! The MP3 tunes will hopefully be available on line later next year for the whole series. That's all the Purslow books, (Wanton Seed, and Southern Harvest) Southern Songster and the two Secret Stream anthologies. Meanwhile contact me if you cant wait.
SS 2 will be reprinted in January. Meanwhile Steve Gardham's book of Yorkshire songs is in preparation, and looks very interesting. All good news! Have a good Christmas.
