Sounds great has a cool sunburst.

Very punchy and neck and frets are perfect.

I owned a 301 from 1969 to five years ago when I donated it to a children's group in Tubac, AZ. It was made in Japan. It had excellent sustain and tone with reasonable action.

I just purchased an Orlando Model 316 small nylon string guitar from The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach, CA for $189 plus tax. It says Japan on the label inside. I wanted a small guitar to practice on during an upcoming road trip and this one sounds and plays pretty good. The tuners are a little sticky and the strings bind a little in the nut, but it’s okay for my purpose.

I just picked up a beautiful sounding Orlando 308 from a used guitar store. I have no idea of when it was made, but it sounds and look beautiful, and like it was worth more than the $100 I paid.

I just picked up an Orlando model 301 at a thrift store for $20. It was strung for a lefty and the pickguard has been ripped off leaving a nasty scar. Plan to restring it and use it to teach kids.

I purchased my Orlando 305 guitar from the wear house that was distributing the guitar.
It was located in Los Angles, Ca. The year was 1964. I still have mine and is in excellent condition.....it still has a great sound!

Hi Orlando fans! i just bought a Model 301 acoustic for $40 off craigslist. This seems to be a "baby" dread size or Parlor sized guitar. It has a beautiful voice and sound! It plays well and the intonation is good. I may sand the saddle down for slightly better action but it's quite playable as is. I have tons of guitars both acoustic and electric but after reading this thread and the other meager info online about Orlando's i figured this must be a gem and another nice addition to my herd! Keep on picking!

Hey fellow guitar aficionados! I got my Orlando classical guitar in Studio City, CA for $40 about 3 years ago. I did not know much about the guitar from the seller's posting other than it was an Orlando. I did an Internet search on Orlando guitars and came up with only this tidbit of info - that The Orlando guitar company was a Japanese company from the 1970s that was trying to make its mark in the U.S. guitar market and that the Orlando guitars had some significant value attached to them. So I initially had bought this guitar because of its value, both historically and monetarily (both of which I think were unknown to the seller at the time who might otherwise have had second thoughts about selling the guitar for so low a price, if at all for that matter). Besides all this, I really had no other info on the instrument - it was still something of an enigma to me. I still didn't know, for example, where the guitar originally came from or what the model it was (due to someone gluing another label over most of what I could make of the top of the lettering of the Orlando label underneath). So for about 3 years, playing this guitar has been a pleasure but also a veiled mystery to me. Since I came across this forum page recently, I read in a guest post that Orlando quite possibly had its origin in the Matsumoku factory. In another post by Denise Thorpe, she said that she acquired an Orlando 317 model guitar with dark orangish-brown-colored wood to the face. Well, I did some more digging for an Orlando 317 model since Denise Thorpe's guitar is physically the same complexion as mine. As it turns out, I found a photo of a guitar sold on eBay that looked exactly like mine. I read the following info - Orlando guitar model 317 - made by Matsumoku. The seller was from New Mexico. This confirms the earlier posting someone made about Orlando guitars being possibly badged by Matsumoku. There is no denying that truth here and someone out there is now experiencing the good craftsmanship and beautifully warm tone of this instrument. I don't know about anyone else, but I am a true believer of the transcendent power of music - just look how the sound of Orlando has enraptured us all!

If anyone has any other pertinent info on the history of Orlando guitars, please feel free to share - we can all draw lots of good energies from our stories.

I recently picked up a nice Orlando 315 made in Japan, a vintage acoustic for sure, I cleaned it up, tuned it up and it plays and sounds great, all laminate I believe.

Planning to go purchase a "Vintage Orlando Acoustic Guitar" on "Craigslist" with info posted about as vague as found here. Currently on Ebay various Orlando guitars are selling from $399-1200, The ad says the only id on the guitar is #283, which I thought might be a model number. I guess if I buy it I will have to name it, and tell all the kiddies what I learned...(i.e. they seem to be, as were most Japanese guitars better made, longer lasting, and increasing in value with age more than any of the other Asian countries that were given the business of making cheap knock off Imports which is why, I would guess, Japan quit,unwilling to manufacture Junk just to compete.)

I gathered my info from guitar price books. The name Orlando came from the city.
Tony was a not a actual part of the company. Although he may have been brought in as an advisor or something similiar to that.
I have 13's on the 12 string tuned down to a C sharp. A minr third all strings, kinda boomy and a nice tuning for a change.

I believe they were made in Japan in the 70's.   I have a Les Paul style and a 12 string. The 12 string is ok, the Les Paul is super. Light weight , plays and sounds like a dream.

Orlando Guitars are made overseas. The headquarters were in Orlando, Florida.
And it is mentioned that Tony Orlando may have been a part of the operation.

In 1977, my brother and I bought a pair of Orlando 335 acoustic 6-string, steel string guitars for $80 each in the SF valley (SoCal). In the ensuing decades those guitars have been played for countless hours in practice, as well as at gigs and recording sessions.

They aren't the very best-sounding guitars ever made (suffering from poor dynamic range and slightly muddled tone), but they're good enough that it wasn't until we could afford radically-better instruments that we bothered to get different guitars.

My first guitar was an Orlando classical that I got as a high school graduation present in '75. I quickly moved on to an electric guitar and didn't really play it much for a while. In recent years, however, I rediscovered what a great guitar it is, and my son now plays it as well. I have used it on several recording projects and it sounds great. I also own an Orlando 5 string banjo and an Orlando mandolin, both of which are great instruments. Both of these were purchased in the mid to late 70's through a music store in southern California. Like everyone else here, I have often wondered about the company that manufactured these but have been unable to find anything about it.

Bought a model 301 steel 6-string acoustic in 1970 in Palos Verdes (Southern CA) for around $100 new. It's been in a closet in it's original case for most of the last 30 years (I never played much). Other than a few scratches on the back from belt buckles, it's in great condition.

Back in the mid 1970s at a party in the Malibu area, a friend of a friend -- a session guitarist who had worked with Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt (testing my memory now...David Lindey or Lindsey, something like that) played around with it for a few minutes and wanted to buy it from me immediately. He said the action was as good as his Martin 6 string, and the sound superb. I thought about it seriously, but decided to keep it (despite being a college student who could have used the money). Later that evening when I told him my decision, he smiled and told me to never sell it; he said this guitar had great sound and was worth way more than the original cost.

Judging from the previous posts, many other people agree -- Orlando made (or was the name brand put on) a quality guitar from Japan with a great sound at a relatively inexpensive price. Inexpensive does not mean cheap. Almost every musician who has played my guitar over the years has tried to talk me into selling it, and that alone speaks volumes.

I originally found this thread googling Orlando guitars because I was considering selling it, since I don't play it. But after reading this thread, I think I'll keep it. Someday, someone will appreciate it, even though it's hard to find any information about the history of Orlando guitars!

Bought a guitar in Stockholm, Sweden which I believe is an Orlando Rickenbacker 330 copy. No name or marks, but its built as described here and in these pictures: http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53671
The guitar is a total wreck. New paint and some bad tuners and bridge. After removing some of the paint I found the original sunburst colour and old wear and tear. This guitar has been played a LOT!
It has humbuckers which I think has been canged, and now all I have to do is get it back to a playable state. I hope it will play great!

Hope to find out more about the guitar soon.

I have an Orlando Model 312 I bought in the early 70's. It has a spruce front and rosewood back. It has never failed me with its beautiful tone and resonance even after all these years of travelling the world. I have heard guitars played that cost $1000+ but none any better than the Orlando which were made in Japan.

I have a Model 317 I got in Phoenix in 1970. It was my graduation present. My parents let me pick which one I really wanted so naturally I chose the more expensive model (it DID sound better, BTW) and paid $100 for it. Still sounds great!

I have an Orlando 305 that I bought back in 1979 in Phx, AZ. I was taking guitar in H.S. and these were the guitars we were using in class. My teacher highly recommended them so for my 16th birthday my Mom and I split the cost of one, which I think was about $150. I stopped playing after I graduated, but I always kept my guitar and am now thinking of learning to play again. It's been kept in a nice case this whole time and pretty much just needs to be restrung and tuned and I should be good to go. Glad to know from this site that my music teacher was right and that these are decent enough guitars.

Hi. I just seem this thread, and wanted to say that I have two Orlando 335's, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Great copies of the Gibson's 335, with almost identical sound and tone quality. Resonates forever!!!!! If you have one---keep it! If you DON'T want to keep it---I'LL BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bought both new in the Mid 60's, and they are simply old friends that have stuck around all of these years...............

A couple years ago I bought an Orlando 334 classical guitar on EBay. I focused on it primarily because the seller was close enough that I could pick it up and save the $35 shipping costs. Competative advantage, you see. Seller said it was like new, and it was except for a detail I'll get to in a second. Since I was the only bidder, I took it away for a cool $12.50.

I was surprised to see it had a solid spruce top rather than laminated. Unfortunately my seller, knowing nothing about guitars, had just put a new set of steel strings on, and lifted the bridge a tad. I was dissapointed, but put on the correct strings, and played it anyhow.

Slowly, I came to appreciate what a well made and great sounding guitar this is. Nothing in the under-$200-when-new class can touch this. Heck, if it weren't for the damaged bridge, I would pay $200 for it used.

If you've got one, if it has low action and sounds good, *don't* let go if it. You may be looking at $300-$400 to replace it.

Just one man's opinion.

I have had my Orlando 310 nylon classical for about 30 years. My step mother who grew up in Burbank, CA owned it originally. She may have bought it near Venice Beach as she lived in the canals area in the late 60's and early 70's. she died in 1984 but I sorta already took over the playing of that guitar around 1980. It isn't quite as beat as Willie Nelson's beater but damn near. The second and third frets on the board are worn down over a quarter inch deep from the bending of the A and D strings and it has taken quite a few hits to the floor over all the years. However, it rings true to this day. Most of the damage was done before I ever got ahold of it. Imagine Venice Beach hippies banging on this thing for a couple of years. New tuners, strings and a cleaning and daily playing has made me yet again appreciate this haggard beauty. The deep tones are just amazing. This guitar has traveled the states and was abused more than slightly but now resides in Colorado and gets taken out to the porch and is played with respect and a joy that few know. It isn't the only guitar I own, however it is the only guitar that I've written about. I wrote lullabies for my daughters on it 30 years ago, it suffered searing heat of the Joshua Tree National Monument days, the freezing chill of high Sierra nights and yet it still plays well. I am thrilled to have found this thread because I remember when "made in Japan" was synonminus with cheap but who understood back then cheap would also bring joy for a lifetime? Testimony to a good glue job with quality materials. Buy a new guitar? Well, I guess, if you have to.

I have my son's Orlando 6 string electric guitar. He passed away last year. It had belonged to his high school friend, and he had it for over 2o years. He didn't play, but kept it because his friend died in a car accident. Now I have it. I know nothing about guitars, and could find no info about this one. It has #101276 written in pencil inside the body. There is no model #, it just says Orlando. It has 5 knobs, a switch,and a big, I think, tremolo bar. It's black with a white piece on top of the base where the knobs are, and on the tuning part. It's in good shape, but covered with lots of dust.This thread has been interesting. I will come back to see if I get any response.

I have an Orlando A583 acoustic nylon string guitiar. It was used then, purchased in 1972. I recently took it out of its case, had it repaired and new strings ...$36 dollars. I have 2 other guitars, one being a 1963 Martin 000-28. My Orlando plays so easily and sounds extra fabulous! Im so glad I didnt purge this 1st guitar of mine during my major house cleaning! I can not find a value any where

Eventhough your guitar is made in Japan, possibly by Matsumoku, Orlando guitars do not hold much value other than sentimental.

My father bought an Orlando for me for Christmas in the late'60s. It had better sound than many I have heard. I can't find ot anything about it either. Unfortunately it is in need of repair. It is my pride and joy. I was hoping the value would justify the repair costs.

The Orlando Archtop Hoollowbody is like the Aria 1202T and the Orlando Viola bass like the Aria 19XX. There are pictures of an Orlando Telecaster, P Bass, SG Bass and acoustic.

I bought an Orlando Model 301 six string accoustic back in 1972 from a music store in Costa Mesa, Ca. I had compared it to a similarly priced Yamamha ($60) and another guitar slightly higher priced and liked the more full sound of the Orlando best. Though I've owned a number of guitars over the years, I still have the 301 ! I also was given an Orlando four string banjo by my father, some years ago !

I emailed the guy and he is 100% certain they are Matsumoku crafted and is looking to confirm before posting.

I bought an Orlando Les Paul Japanese copy in the mid 70's from a friend. The Orlando Les Paul is probably the best sounding guitar I have ever played.
It is customized with special small hollow cavities just under each of the hummbucker pickups in the arch of the Les Paul design, that adds to the unique tone quality of this guitar. It's the only Les Paul copy manufacturer I know that did this! It's a rare find to locate one of these amazing guitars!!!

This is a very interesting thread.

In 1970, i was 14 yrs old and taking guitar lessons. Er, Classical Guitar lessons: my father didn't want me to become a dope-smoking rock-n-roller. I was using a hand-me-down beater guitar... and my teacher at the time sold Mom that I needed a new guitar. The music store had just received a shipment of Orlando guitars.

I remember to this day, as my mother pondered over the Orlando guitars in stock. I remember the store owner/salesman said: "This is the best, it is solid wood... but the difference in sound is very slight from this other one, which is $20 less." I remember begging Mom for the better one. She finally caved in and bought me the Orlando model 305. Her purchase price at the time was about $100. This, in 1970.

I still have that guitar, and am looking at it now. Oh, by the way, I've played guitar all my life, and am now in the industry: I am Director of Public Relations for a guitar manufacturer. So I know a lot about guitars.

The Orlando model 305 has Rosewood back and sides. By inspection, it's not clear whether it's solid Rosewood or laminate. But from that era, East Indian Rosewood would have been practical and inexpensive for Orlando. I'm certainly not going to drill holes to find out!

On the back of the model 305, the Rosewood is 'book matched" - lending more credence that this is solid Rosewood.

The purfuling (binding) top and back is Rosewood. There is hand-inlay at all areas of the binding (white-ebony-white), and with the age of this guitar, you can feel the 'raise' of the binding. It's not a decal or a fake: this is hand-inlaid stuff.

The top wood of the model 305? I'm not sure. With age, it could be Spruce or Cedar. My best guess is Cedar. But I'm certain that it's Solid wood, not a laminate, based on my comparing the grains of the wood from inside the soundhole vs the top. Internal bracing is standard Classical Guitar stuff.

The neck appears to be of Mahogany, and has a Scarf Joint that angles to the peg-head (bummer). The fretboard is Rosewood, and there's a Rosewood cap on the top of the peg-head. Oh and yes, a decal as a stripe down the peg-head. The tuners are adequate for a guitar of this vintage.

For the model 305, the Nut and the Saddle are of unknown material, but can be easily replaced/upgraded.

Overall, this is a beautiful guitar that defies its age, and certainly its original price. I have compared it with high-end Student Guitars up to the $3000 range, and it still excels.

Mom would be proud that I've kept this guitar for 40+ years. It still plays and sounds incredible.

If anyone else has an Orlando model 305, please respond. My take: these are incredibly well-made instruments from the past, as Japan struggled to prove that they could make quality musical instruments.

I have an Orlando #317 - purchased from a little music store in So. Pasadena in 1973. I think it was around $100 - a birthday gift from my grandfather. I never played it much - my hands were too small. Still in the original cardboard box - it does have a nice tone. Taking it to be re-strung - if I get any info I will pass it along.

I have also been fortunate enough to have an Orlando 305 fall into my hands.
My daughter's brother-in-law had given it to her for her kids (my grandkids) to play: he had never played and knew nothing about it. When I found it, my grandkids had almost trashed it: broken the top at the front, and the bridge was coming off. I "disgustedly" took it from her and told her I would try to fix it and give it back to her kids when they would respect an instrument more.
I was able to fix it easily, and you can barely tell it was damaged.
So I put a set of cheap nylon strings on it, and started playing around with it.
The more I played it, the more I liked it.
Not only did it play like a dream, it sounded awesome.
Now, I keep it hanging in my tv room, and get it down often while watching tv and just mess around on it, playing along with commercials and practicing.
The more I play this guitar, the more impressed I am. Just a sweet mellow tone, and fairly decent volume when you want it.
What a find!
My grandkids may well have to wait to get this back as part of their inheritance!
