February edition of music mag UNCUT features a cover-CD dedicated to Topic Records, including what is described as a recently-discovered Anne Briggs recording of "The Cruel Mother."

Discovered on a reel-to-reel along with three other recordings, here’s a previously unheard Briggs track. A take on the dark traditional tune, with Briggs accompanying herself on gently picked guitar, it’s a marvellous, transcendent find. The four tracks will be included on the deluxe reissue of 1971’s Anne Briggs this year."

All great artists on the CD, but all English. It's curious how much Topic has become essentially an English record label when it used to put out recordings from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and beyond. I wonder why they chose not to take this opportunity to highlight some of the many non-English musicians and recordings in their back catalogue?
