Subject: Tech: can only get to mudcat through links on

Hi. I don't come to Mudcat much anymore, and one reason is I can't get in typing the address. The only way I can get into Mudcat is if someone on the FB page has posted a link to a thread. I can use that to get to the thread, and once in, can navigate fully on the Mudcat site.

This is the message I get when I type in www.mudcat.org. "Not Found

HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found."   The address bar will display "Not Secure - muscat.org.

If it matters, I am using an old iMac and can not update beyond Catalina

Any ideas?

Hi, Janie Try typing just mudcat.org in the address bar of your browser. No need to make it complicated. Just mudcat.org

The address is now mudcat.org, not www.mudcat.org

Bookmark this link

https://mudcat.org

And don't use the "https" - just "http."

Why not https, SRS? Our official address is https://mudcat.org

The https doesn't work only on the one or two days a year that our security certificate is expired. And I think with most browsers, it will work just fine if you just put mudcat.org

I never see the site showing up as https. It only comes through as http these days. (Though that said, I see one page has https now.) I only use http when doing a Google advanced search, to be sure it will get in.

I believe I have it set right now. What should happen is that when someone goes to www.mudcat.org it is redirected to mudcat.org automatically.

After the last crash, I didn't set that up again properly because my browser does it for me for some reason, which was why folks were having the trouble with the www.

The reason why its redirected, why I do it this way, is that all the Google search rankings, server settings, and stats are split up if some folks go to www and others to just mudcat. They are treated as 2 separate sites/pages, when in fact they are not. That does a disservice to us as far as showing up in search results and my seeing correct information as to who and how many people are visiting us. The redirecting to a single URL (canonical) gives us our true place in the family of things.

Sorry for any trouble.

max

Max: Yes it's now redirecting from https:/www.mudcat.org to https://mudcat.org for me. It wasn't when I posted - I checked.

However it's not redirecting from http://www.mudcat.org which gives a 404. That's what the OP got.

I don't know whether you intend http://mudcat.org to redirect to https://mudcat.org but it doesn't. I can get to http://mudcat.org by downgrading my browser's security settings. The OP probably has an old browser which does not automatically upgrade http to https.

It doesn't help that many browsers no longer display the www in the address bar. (One way to find out which you're using is the copy the address as if making a link.)

[And to users of my Mudcat Browser Tools addon: I added the redirects to the addon a couple of weeks ago, so you cannot actually get to http://mudcat.org.]
