Subject: Musicians in East Riding of Yorkshire? From: robstott Date: 30 Jan 24 - 09:19 AM Hello! Apologies if this is not the right place for this sort of message.. Just wondering if there are any musicians here from the East Riding - in particular Bridlington/Driffield area who might be interested in getting together to play? Initially just for the fun of it, but *maaaybe* working towards something we could play in public. Drop me a message here, or at robstott@mac.com if that's something you'd be interested in. Cheers! From: Steve Gardham Date: 30 Jan 24 - 10:24 AM The best suggestion I can give you as a musician in Hull already in a group, is to find out when and where all the local sessions are. I know there are sessions nearly every night of the week in Beverley and some in Hull. Also it would be helpful for prospective accompanists if you state which genres of music you're interested in, what instrument(s) you play and what other combinations you are looking for. Are you looking for improving beginners or seasoned players? I think there is a folk club in Brid and I recently saw something folky advertised in Driffield. |
Subject: RE: Musicians in East Riding of Yorkshire? From: robstott Date: 30 Jan 24 - 10:57 AM Some good tips, thanks. I was trying to leave it fairly vague as far as instruments needed goes. I'm a decent guitarist - played in semi-pro pop/rock bands in my youth. I'm no virtuoso, but I can more or less sight read and play most stuff that's put in front of me. I'm less good, but passable at mandolin and Irish bouzouki and can make a horrible din on a few other things. I'm more into folk these days. I wasn't really thinking about getting back into performing until I bumped into a whistle player who's sparked my interest again. My musical tastes are fairly broad, but I do like dance tunes - my copy of Playford is well thumbed. The whistle player leans more towards songs and is especially keen on things with a war theme. Of course, if others join we'd try to find a kind of mid ground or mix that keeps everyone happy. As far as other instruments go, someone who could sing and/or play fiddle would be great, but frankly we're open to anything right now. Just trying to find some folks to have a bit of a musical mess around with and see what, if anything, happens from there. As far as experience goes, anyone who can hold a tune and play with others is welcome - we can learn from each other if necessary. Is the folk club in Brid still running? Their website was last updated in 2019... not that that means much, I guess. Hope that's of some help! |

Subject: RE: Musicians in East Riding of Yorkshire? From: Steve Gardham Date: 31 Jan 24 - 02:48 PM Jim Eldon, fiddler, singer, song collector, whistler, flautist, used to do a lot in Brid and still has a lot of friends there among the fishermen. I could probably pm you an email address if wanted. He's a pro performer going all over the country but he might have some useful info. He used to play his fiddle on the Yorkshire Belle in summer. he also plays for Flamborough Longsword. |
