Sad news today: the Eel’s Foot at Eastbridge, the Middleton ‘Bell’, and Blaxhall ‘Ship’ have all closed. Quite apart from the loss of three wonderful real-ale pubs, all three have hosted traditional music for what is certainly a total of hundreds of years.
There aren’t many options left round here, but the music will never die out. Will it?

Bang goes the only reason I had for going back to Suffolk.

Did one big chain own them all?

Any chance of a community buyout?

If pubs are losing money they tend to close. 25% of them since 2000 (13000)
Over 2,000 pubs in Ireland have closed since 2005, a national decline of 22.5%.
In 1970 the UK had 75000 pubs
1980 69000
1990 63500
2000 60860
2010 55454
2020 46800
Society changes, as does the way it spends its leisure time.
Pub closures are the result - although lockdown and taxation also have a part to play.
Sad for those of us of an age where the pub was the center of life, but home entertainment and cheaper supermarket booze also has a role in reduced footfall.

Once the last of the pubs in an area closes the supermarkets will no longer offer cheaper booze - you read it first here!!!

BBC News reported this closure and the pub's brewer, Adnams, has stated that they are both greatly valued pubs at the heart of the community and said that they wanted to reopen them as soon as possible.

I couldn't find anything about the Ship closing.
Maybe it's in the local rag.

If anyone can get hold of a copy of Richard Wilson's history of Greene King you will find it very interesting especially Greene King's policy on rural pubs.

The Eels Foot and the Bell are both owned by Adnams, who re-opened them on Good Friday. The company that owned the tenancy stopped trading, hence the temporary closure.

As far as I know, neither one of them currently has any regular involvement with traditional music, happy to be corrected.

I didn't know about the Ship. I'll see what I can find out.

I did a long cross-country drive (from Chippenham down to the A27 and Southampton) a few weeks ago and it was really noticeable how many pubs have either closed entirely or become restaurants. Not good news, but a sign of the times after all that's been going on.

Yes, it's all back to normal at the Blaxhall Ship now. A temporary closure caused by some sort of business management restructuring, so I gather. Hopefully this will stave off the likes of Chef and Brewer for the forseeable.
