Just learned from Lesley Moore in Boston that New England songwriter Paul MacNeil has died of a heart attack.

He's been living in the Philippines for some years now. I haven't seen him locally or around the Press Room for, I think, at least twenty or twenty-five years.

He was an old friend of Curmudgeon's (my late husband, Tom Hall). When I first met Tom back in 1980, he was regularly performing Paul's song "Midway". After the Press Room session got going, Tom stopped performing contemporary songs and stuck to trad. But I always loved the song.

I've got to relearn "Midway"; I really love the song — "If you don't get lost there's a chance you may never be found." Bill Staines recorded it with Renée on his first LP.

Midway - Paul MacNeil
