This thread is temporarily closed for the rest of the day.

Put words to songs where words to Trump songs need to go - the Trump songs thread. I'll save the duplication and move the most recent one there.

Go outside and work in your garden. Play music. Clean your house. DON'T WATCH THE NEWS IT WILL MAKE YOU CRAZY. No one knows anything until really late tonight to begin with.

Another pro-tip, from Rachel Maddow: Don't drink. Getting sloshed to watch the results isn't good for anyone. You need a clear head to understand what you're seeing (and to understand that you're not going to see the results likely until tomorrow at the soonest if everything runs perfectly, and a bit longer if states take their time counting.) I found a nice brand of Scotch but that is in anticipation of Harris winning and when the final AP call is made. (AP isn't the same as the governors and the federal government, but they're pretty darned good at what they do. I posted a link to it a couple of weeks ago if you want to go look for it.)

I think Melania is from Slovenia.
Slovenia offers free tuition at public universities to citizens of Slovenia and the European Union (EU). It also offers free tuition to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, and North Macedonia.
Students who are not eligible for free tuition may pay as little as $2,100 per year for a bachelor's degree program. Slovenian universities may also charge American students tuition for undergraduate study. However, there are opportunities to earn a free doctorate qualification.

What, in God’s name, are 50% of American voters thinking of?

Trump will win, he will de escalate the war in ukraine and increase arms supply to israel

Sandman, you may be right, but to make things a little clearer, he will deprive Ukrainians of the means to defend themselves and Russia will take Ukraine, then Poland, on through the former Soviet states and then into Europe.
And the arming of Israel will mean the utter genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, and Israel will expand into Gaza and the West Bank and onwards into Lebanon, Jordan, etc.
In America, all abortion will be banned, racial apartheid will be reinstituted, all climate policy will be dismantled, the civil service slashed apart, millions of immigrants will be deported and America will try to go it alone, Brexit-style.
The only winners will be China and Russia, which will re-colonise Africa…

The Man in the Mask

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1971 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1999. .

Come sit down beside me before the big T.V.
And watch the funny pictures they have there to look at,
Shampoo for your hair and the last polar bear,
And the man on the moon who was walking around
Then left, leaving junk on the once virgin ground.

There's old timey movies with old fashioned dresses,
The kidnap of babies and other such messes,
There's football and baseball and guys selling cars,
And then there's The Man in the Mask.

Chorus:
They say it's his face, but I just can't believe it.
It looks like a mask that I saw in the store.
It talks with deep feeling about ending some war
And stopping inflation, and it's so fantastic,
You'll cry while you're laughing, and roll on the floor.

Every four years he puts a new mask on.
Each one is worse than the one he had before,
But the words are the same and the same earnest manner,
About ending inflation and stopping the war.

The sponsors paid out a million of millions
To get him up there with his magic routine,
But it's really a bargain, 'cause there's such a margin
In war and inflation and the big T.V. screen
That gives us The Man in the Mask.

The shitstorm of Republican voting fraud lawsuits numbers over 200 already this year. The last election had only only 126.
Trump lost 62 of the 63 lawsuits that made it to Court last time, and many Trump lawyers lost their privilege to practice law because they lied in Court.

Fences are up around Howard University, where Harris will monitor the election. If I were a gambler I would bet Trump will announce he is the winner before the count is done.

Stilly where is your sense of humor? A joke about a dictator in power can land you in prison or worse. This might be your last chance to be funny with impunity.

For those across the ocean,

Why we have such a stupid system

Briefly, The simple answer is that it would eliminate swing states and let the popular vote elect the president, and the Republicans will do anything to prevent that.

Most Democrats will vote for Harris. Some are disaffected by the War in Gaza, something Democrats actually have little say in, and those malcontents will have to decide which is worse - Trump and his Muslim ban or Harris and hoping she gets things turned around as far as Netanyahu.

Republicans who vote for Trump are not the same ones who are part of the Lincoln Project and all of the other groups of Republicans who have come out to vote for Harris for fear of Trump's lunacy and the hangers-on he has attracted.

So it isn't really Democrats v. Republicans, it is Democrats v a portion of the Republicans who are so entrenched they don't care. The rest of the Republicans are voting with the Democrats.

I don't get the impression that there is a lot of third-party activity out there. It's not like Nader in the Bush v. Gore election.

BWM, I heard similar info and commentary on the Oz TV show, Planet America.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. As that article said, one good thing is that Biden is the current President so he won't just sit back like Trump did and wait - with glee - for the violence to escalate at the Capitol. Biden already has security measures in place.

At this late stage, all we can do is watch and wait, and offer the usual Brit remedy: tea and sympathy.

They're putting up fences and barricades around the White House, and I think near the Capitol in case of trouble.... so, yeah, the authorities are aware that they need to be ahead of possible problems.
If there IS trouble, Biden won't hesitate to call out troops, unlike Jan. 6, 2021

You think law enforcement and the Justice Department aren't already ahead of what Trump will try to pull? They got a preview four years ago, and if there's one thing about Trump, he can't help himself but brag about the dirty tricks he has in store. It's a roadmap for law enforcement.

My yard signs were stolen overnight; the GOP sign next door is still there. I had an old Biden/Harris sign from 4 years ago that I taped over "Biden" and put out in the yard. Closer to the house this time. One day to go, my voice still heard out there.

As stated before in this thread, if Harris wins it is guaranteed that Trump will cause trouble, unlike previous unsuccessful contenders who concede their loss gracefully. And the level of trouble Trump can and probably will cause is out of the ballpark compared with any other contenders in previous events in the Presidential race, as far as I know.

We're on the home stretch now. Let's just watch and wait and try not to get het up.

All we need to wait for is judge Juan Merchan on November 26 to sentence The Donald to prison. Yes, it is 20 days of agony until that happens, but it will shut him up. Judge delays Trump’s sentencing until after the election.

And assuming he loses, there are all sorts of other cases in the queue ready to go; the Justice Department policy of not pursuing cases close to the election has been in effect, though less so than some years. Ever since Comey put out a release about Hillary's aid's computer a couple of weeks before the election we've all know that policy has holes in it.

Anyway, the dominoes are lined up, a whole bunch of them are in play (early voting) and we'll see where they fall tomorrow.

The only person I'll be interested in following the rest of the week is Steve Kornacki. The man is a genius with the live screen, the calculator, and the number crunching he does in his head in real time on live TV.

Reading this morning’s article in the on-line i Newspaper, it’s very likely the US is in deep shit no matter who wins. If what the article says is correct, Trump’s plan in the event he loses is to go on the attack, claiming various forms of interference, challenging KH’s legitimacy as a candidate, etc., and ‘fomenting disquiet on a level even grander than last time.

For SRS’s benefit, this is a serious piece in a serious newspaper which does not have links to any political party. It is nothing to do with your god-forsaken ‘polls’, neither is it a random piece of internet horse-shit. It is, however, well worth reading.

It's a binary bet not governed by house rules and algorithms for roulette, blackjack, or slot machines. It has no predictive power other than the pockets and habits of (degenerate) gamblers.

But does "the house" use the bets that have been placed as its predictor, or does it use the figures from the number of people who've voted in specific known-politics areas, etc?

Yet half of the voting population worship him - I remember, after the last election, a loud, crimson-faced Trumper proclaiming that Trump, in fact, won the election and that he was the rightful President because he was “Aaaaww-dained baahh Aaaawwl-maaahh-deee Gaaahd!”.

I thought I shared this before. Why the Right Thinks Trump Is Running Away With the Race
Skewed polls and anonymous betting markets are building up Republicans’ expectations. Donald Trump could use that to challenge the result.

This should be readable by all - it's an article shared from my subscription. This is the start of it:
The torrent of polls began arriving just a few weeks ago, one after the other, most showing a victory for Donald J. Trump.

They stood out amid the hundreds of others indicating a dead heat in the presidential election. But they had something in common: They were commissioned by right-leaning groups with a vested interest in promoting Republican strength.

These surveys have had marginal, if any, impact on polling averages, which either do not include the partisan polls or give them little weight. Yet some argue that the real purpose of partisan polls, along with other expectation-setting metrics such as political betting markets, is directed at a different goal entirely: building a narrative of unstoppable momentum for Mr. Trump.

The partisan polls appear focused on lifting Republican enthusiasm before the election and — perhaps more important — cementing the idea that the only way Mr. Trump can lose to Vice President Kamala Harris is if the election is rigged. Polls promising a Republican victory, the theory runs, could be held up as evidence of cheating if that victory does not come to pass.

“Republicans are clearly strategically putting polling into the information environment to try to create perceptions that Trump is stronger,” said Joshua Dyck, who directs the Center for Public Opinion at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. “Their incentive is not necessarily to get the answer right.” [emphasis mine]

Last week, the right-wing influencer Ian Miles Cheong shared a survey with his 1.1 million followers on X. The forecast from a new polling company suggested, without sharing its methodology, that the former president would take 74.3 percent of the national vote — a landslide unprecedented in American history.

“Trump is absolutely going to win,” Mr. Cheong wrote. “The data shows it.”

In the final stretch of the campaign in 2020, Republican-aligned pollsters released 15 presidential election polls of swing states. In the same period this year, they have released 37, according to a New York Times analysis of data from the polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight. Of those 37, all but seven had Mr. Trump in the lead.

That increase comes as the volume of nonpartisan polls — such as those commissioned by major news organizations — have dropped significantly, though they still make up a majority of the polls released. Of the nonpartisan surveys released in the final weeks of this year’s campaign, roughly half showed a lead for Mr. Trump.

And that is counting only polls that are explicitly designated as politically aligned by FiveThirtyEight, which sets a high bar for defining partisan polls. There have been additional polls conducted by firms with a history of favoring Republicans or with a public record of pro-Republican rhetoric that have not been designated as partisan by any of the aggregators.

Other factors have also fueled the perception of Mr. Trump’s strength. Betting platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi that allow people to place bets on election outcomes have seen a spike in Mr. Trump’s favor over the past month — one that does not track with the overall state of the race as captured by reputable polling firms.

That surge appears to have been pushed almost entirely by a very small number of high-value bets from just four accounts linked to a French national. Those accounts have collectively placed $30 million on a Trump victory this month. [emphasis mine]

Mr. Trump and his allies, including Elon Musk, have nonetheless promoted the betting markets — although they are opaque, largely unregulated and not a scientific way to gauge public polls. Mr. Trump cited Polymarket in a recent speech, saying, “I don’t know what the hell it means, but it means we’re doing pretty well.”

A spokesperson for Polymarket declined to provide comment for this article.

Dick can ignore the bets. They're rigged.

> Ergo polls are skewed to the right with error.

That's not necessarily the case. In the UK, there's a phenomenon known to pollsters as "shy tories": people who are too ashamed to admit to a pollster that they'll vote for the Nasty Party, let alone why. Then there's the case of my late mother-in-law, who would gleefully say "Of course I'll vote for you" to private pollsters from all parties, partly out of mischief (a party machine can always do with a bit of grit in its gears), but mainly to get them off her doorstep.

There's plenty of causes of slack in the figures, and they're somewhere on the border between "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns". All poll figures are guesstimates at best, and sometimes outright wishful thinking. Ach, all we can say with certainty is that all of life is six to five against.

It won't finish on Tuesday. And each state has to canvas the vote and the governors confirm the electoral college votes. (You remember the term "fake electors?") But we should know within a day or two, though the battles in the courts are bound to take a while. The result should be the same (last time Trump tried the court route he lost 60 of 61 cases, and the one he won was meaningless.)

In Bush V. Gore, Gore won the popular vote, it came down to Florida and then the US Supreme Court. If that were to happen again, we're all screwed.

If the vote finishes on Tuesday (does it?) what about the electoral college votes?

The wait until we get there is nerve-wracking, whatever we call the day. It's the days after that will have lots of drama as states with different counting requirements go through the paces, all the while Trump will offer a boisterous performance declaring his victory and challenging anyone to defy his claim.

It isn't going to be pretty.

And Donuel, that Tucker Carlson - I knew he was a fruitcake but this episode just tops off his career. I saw it on TV. Weird!
