First Kinky now Martin. We lost another great musical comic the other day. Most people may know Mull from his decades as a comic actor on TV but before all that he was a songwriter and a fine guitarist who wrote hilarious songs and sang them out on tour. He also recorded a number of comedy LPs, my favorite was "Normal". I saw him once live in D.C. back in the 70's when he was on tour with "...His Fabulous Furniture" and howled with laughter.

I owned a 45 record of his Called "Dueling Tubas", an obvious sendup of the "Dueling Banjos" craze of the early 70s. The B-side was "The 2001 Polka". It amazed me that a couple of instrumentals could be so funny.

Peter Rowan wrote a song years ago of past days in California.

Lonesome L.A. Cowboy

"...I know Kris and Rita and Marty Mull
Are meeting at the Troubadour
We'll get it on with the Joy Of Cooking
While the crowd calls out for more..."

I still remember listening to his voice on the sound system singing "Normal" while I was walking through a hiking supply shop in Cambridge, MASS. And I know I've heard "Dueling Tubas" at least twice.

The kind of understated talent Americans might not be readily known for.

Men (The Wonderful World of Boat Music, aka the first American folk song.)
(Martin Mull, Steve Martin)

[Chorus 4x]
Men, men, men, men.

It's great to be on a ship with men
And sail across the sea-O.
We don't know where we'll land or when,
But it's great to be with men.

[cho.]
It's great to be with men

'Cause men can sweat and men can stink
And no one seems to care-O.
We'll throw the dishes in the sink
And clog the drain with hair-O.

[cho.]
And clog the drain with hair-O.
Men, men, men,
It's a ship all filled with men,
So batten down the ladies' room,
There's no one here but men!
(2x) Men, men, men, men.

There's men above, there's men below
There's men down in the galley.
There's Butch and Spike and Buzz and Biff
And one guy we call Sally!

[cho.]
And one guy we call Sally!
Men, men, men,
It's a ship all filled with men,
You'll never have to lift the seat,
There's no one here but men!
(2x) Men, men, men, men.

We're men and friends until the end
And none of us are sissies,
At night we sleep in separate beds
And blow each other kissies!

[cho.]
And blow each other kissies!
Men, men, men,
It's a ship all filled with men,
So throw your rubbers overboard,
There's no one here but men!

(Cho.)
Ah-Men.
Ytube: Martin Mull - Men.

Note: The album track is 2/3 comedy sketch 1/3 song. The Fernwood 2 Night version (Frank de Vol, Tommy Tedesco et al) is wonderfully bad.
