Subject: McGregor & Hall--Atten: Suzanne From: GUEST,Nick Date: 23 Jan 00 - 11:08 AM Suzanne--You mentioned Robin Hall's passing in one of your posts. I'm from the US and have been trying find out what happened to Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor for years. It always seems be to have been the greatest mystery. I've never been to Scotland, but on visits to Ireland I would ask people (musicians) and get very weird answers. I have a handful of their recording and think they're great. Anything you could tell me I would appreciate. Also--Suzanne I transcribed Thomas Muir--if you give me your email I'll send it to you. Nick Oxbownick1@aol.com |

Subject: RE: McGregor & Hall--Atten: Suzanne From: Susanne (skw) Date: 23 Jan 00 - 06:15 PM Nick, I'll try and dig out the piece on Robin's death. I met him once, at the 1993 or so Glasgow Folk Festival, and was told he was severely ill even then. He contracted infant paralysis as a child, I think, and was never in really good health. Jimmie MacGregor is a broadcaster on Radio Scotland nowadays. He was still using a lot of folk music in his programme 'MacGregor's Gathering' a few years ago. I can't remember whether that is still running. With a lot of others of the 'old guard', they did a marvellous night about the early Folk Revival that Festival. Several who took part are no longer with us: Danny Kyle, Bobby Campbell, Hamish Imlach (well, he didn't take part due to his tour schedule, but they'd kept a couple of chairs for him ...). A very emotional night. But why am I telling you all this? Why not a Scotsman who took part in the whole thing? In other words, what's become of Ewan McVicar? - Susanne (born and bred in Germany, but Scots by inclination) |

Subject: RE: McGregor & Hall--Atten: Suzanne From: Susanne (skw) Date: 23 Jan 00 - 06:36 PM Nick, I forgot to say, yes, I'd like the words to Thomas Muir - but why don't you post them in the thread? I'll refresh it for you to find. Doctor John, all I can think of is Hamish Imlach mentioning Alex and Rory McEwan in his book. I'll look it up if that's any help. - Susanne |
