Who knows Pete Stanley, one of the finest Banjo players in the uk? I often heard him on Wally Whyton's BBC Radio folk programmes years ago, He often played with blokes like Johnny Silvo and Dave Moses, and maybe even the Chad (something ) group. There was a Malcolm someone too ? I wonder if they still play. Heard Pete Stanley last time in a pub in Highgate, I think.?

He was taking a course in making Banjos and their history at London Guildhall University( used to be London College of Furniture) a few years ago and became a splendid maker, He is, and has been one of my heros since I heard him play with Wiz Jones in the 60s. His first (personally made) Banjo when he strung it up for the first time was amazing and he played a"Flatt and Scruggs" medley on it for me. he has got to be one of the UKs best banjo pickers and now a serious Historian of the Banjo and maker too.

Pete Stanley regularly appears at UK bluegrass festivals, often with Brian Golby on guitar. Pete does really cool three finger picking without using picks - it can be done, banjo players!

Cheers

Ray

HI Beachcomber.
In case you didn't know.......
Johnny Silvo lives now in Stavanger,Norway.
The Malcolm you mentioned is Malcolm Price. He now lives at Etterstad,Oslo.
Johnny is still pretty active musically.I met him at the Fløra Festival(west coast of Norway)and again at the Skagen Festival(Danmark). He has recently released a solo CD.
We don't see so much of Malcolm........don't think he plays much at all now,but we're working on that one!

Greetings John.

Many thanks John,Micca and Banjoray, What brings all those guys to the Scandanavian climes??? Are'nt there any appreciative "folkies" left around London nowadays? Still it was great to hear of those musicians, from days of my youth, I believe I heard some of them at Cecil Sharpe House also.

Hi greycap, I remember you and Pete staying with me and my wife (Tony and Val) after your gig at RAF Bruggen ( The Borderers folk club) Germany in 1975ish. It was Pete who inspired me to play Banjo which I still do. Best wishes to you both. PS I still have the original poster from the club advertising the gig. Tony.

Good to hear about Pete.

I saw him once or twice in the 80's at the "Cellar Upstairs" Folk Club in Camden Town which I believe Sheila Miller still runs, very enjoyable evenings.

Hey, Eric the Red,
'Course I played with Nick, opened for Willie Nelson at the London Palladium with him, among other things. Nick was at the same gathering ( it was Brian Golbey's 25th wedding anniversary ).
He's living near Great Yarmouth.
Hi, Guest Tony, I suppose Bruggen is now closed. I used to love those Forces Folk Federation tours. Best wishes to you and Val,
Roger

A friend of mine still owns a Gibson B45-12 that he bought from Malcolm Price back in the early 70s. I've often wondered what happened to Malcolm, and now I know.

Must try to see Pete Stanley sometime soon. If one can have a favourite banjo player, he was mine, way back when.

What's the appeal of Norway? Booze is staggeringly expensive and its dark for half the year! Must be the wimmin!!

Alan

Pete started me on banjo when we went out in 1960. He wrote out the main licks (which I still have). Wizz, Pete & me exchanged loads of letters from all over Europe as we went busking-and I still have them. I have just started playing again, lots of jams- would love to contact them. P.O. box or agent would be OK- write, phone or e-mail. Maria-Los Angeles.

You guys are marvelous! Thanks for the help in contacting. I always wondered why neither one ever visited the U.S. They had an open invitation to a couch. Guess fame and fortune kept them home!

If Pete has never visited the States, then there was an incredible look alike/sound alike playing at Galax last year. Probably still there on you tube.

Pete's very much alive and pickin' - I was on the phone with him on Tuesday this week (I'm his son).

He's travelled to the US many times, on his most recent trip in August 08 he opened the Fiddler's Convention in Galax:

Great to know Pete, Brian Golby and Roger Knowles are still making music. Haven't seen any of you for a long time- Bluegrass by the Shore at the Brighton Centre is my best memory!! Once made the journey from Eastbourne to the Ideal Home Exibition with my LP of Pete and Roger playing Dualing Banjos- got it played on the old Radio London radio station which was broadcasting from there- they had a country program hosted by a man ( I thik his surname was Powell, Bob perhaps?
Great musicians all of you- thanks for all the great memories you gave me.

I remember Pete & Brian at Stanford Arms in Brighton from mid 1960's and lived just a short walk away
Can not remember exactly if it was Pete or Brian that mastered a fiddle or violin in one week
I was impressed
We shared a love of Jimmie Rogers old records
Those were magical times
