Subject: Poverty Knock please look a this From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 15 Aug 24 - 10:37 AM Please take 20 minutes to watch this film. Although it was made for schools it is well worth your time. I live in Lancashire in a cottage built about 1820. It was originally one up one down. The row housed the carters for the estate and the car park was once the stables. Upstairs there was once a loom for home working. The story of this short film is very likely relevant to those who lived here. I am in the process of researching Yorkshire song tunes for Steve Gardham's new book. One of them is 'Poverty Knock' I will admit to being rather ignorant about the Chartist movement in Victorian times. How lucky am I to sit in my armchair typing this request, with the lives of those who lived here contributing so richly to my comfort. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obEbqksGXnY |
Subject: RE: Poverty Knock please look a this From: r.padgett Date: 15 Aug 24 - 12:17 PM Poverty Knocks attributed to Tom Daniel of course died in 1970 ~ Tom believed to have "remembered" the verses made up by the mill worker lasses ~ as far I know the tune was an original A number of other songs sung by Tom and very likely still in Mick Haywood repertoire ~ from him Bill Price died 1980, Wendy in Whitby both knew him very well "Mary O Mary" has an interesting tune and Tom borrowed one or two tunes Ray |

Subject: RE: Poverty Knock please look a this From: r.padgett Date: 16 Aug 24 - 03:07 AM Humour in adversity ~ Tom also had "Old Jim Slack" and "Young Simon John" there is song "Long Tom" also Families had to move from the country way of life, which was bad enough and depicted in Nic's film clip as the work available was little. As in Dalesman's Litany move to big cities and break back work in factories and bad employers Ray |
