Subject: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 23 Jan 00 - 04:34 PM This morning I discovered that my postings list me as "GUEST" Mike Billo. I assumed that I needed to reset my cookie as a result of the security measures taken due to someone recently using the name of a Mudcat member other than themself. Well, after the past half hour spent wrestling with the "help" and membership features, I have learned the following; 1. After 50 years as Mike Billo, I can no longer be Mike Billo, because that name is already in use by someone (presumably, me, Mike Billo) 2; I can no longer use my code word, because that too, is already in use ( again, must be that rascal, ME, Mike Billo) 3. I can't post as Mike Billo because recent security measures have identified me as a "Guest" and not the real Mike Billo. 4. None of the 'help' features are any help at all. The irresponsible behavior of someone who thought they were playing a prank, has caused a paranoid mindset that has made this place a bummer. In an effort to protect identity, you've actually robbed me of mine. There are many here whose opinions I have respected, and whose knowledge and observations I have learned from. I'd like to think that I have contributed a bit myself, but (speaking only for myself) the Mudcat has become more trouble than it's worth. Adios |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: BDenz Date: 23 Jan 00 - 04:37 PM Mike -- in case you haven't REALLY gone, at the top of the membership page is a clickable link that says "reset cookie". Click that and follow the notes. I changed computers recently and it needed my cookie placed where it could find it. Now all works fine. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: MudGuard Date: 23 Jan 00 - 04:53 PM Please, Mike, before leaving, if resetting your cookie does not help or does not work, ask Max whether he can help you. Perhaps he can do something for you MudGuard |

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: lloyd61 Date: 23 Jan 00 - 05:57 PM This has raised a few interesting questions. (1) How do I have my same name on my Lap-Top. (2) When I turn 62, in a few months, can I just reset my cookie? Mike...Life is not simple any more. Now we have to watch our Cookies, of course that has always been the case for us guys. I'm going to up on my protective jock when I access this site. One more thought Mike, This has the makings for a great song. Maybe it could be something like.... I've been kicked in the cookies and striped my name. This World Wide Wed is going to drive me insane. I can't HTML, I can't even spelll This World Wide Web must have been invented in Hell.
I sit here at night for hours untold This World Wide Web has captured my soul I've lost my identity I am on longer me, The World Wide Web will be the death of me.

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jan 00 - 05:59 PM Dear Mike, I am sorry for your troubles. Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Jon Freeman Date: 23 Jan 00 - 07:22 PM I don't know if this one has been tried but I suggested it in the help forum to somebody and it appeared to work. Make sure you are logged out and then go to membership. Near the top, it says something like "If you are already a member but your details don't appear, click here." Follow that link and you will be prompted for your user name. Supply that and hit submit and you should be prompted for your password. With any luck when you supply that, you will be re-instated. Jon

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,ddw Date: 23 Jan 00 - 08:27 PM Mike, I had the same thing, but reset my cookie and it worked — but then it came back. Don't know how this will appear. But I agree with others who urge you to stay. It might me a hassle now, but what's here is worth a little annoyance once in a while. I'm sure Max will sort it out soon. davod |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,ddw Date: 23 Jan 00 - 08:29 PM Yeah, I'm back to being a guest again. Oh well — not the first time. And no, I didn't change my name, just didn't notice the typo before I hit "submit." |

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,_gargoyle - the GUEST Date: 23 Jan 00 - 09:09 PM So sorry to see you go....when I saw the thread I first thought that some of the other "members" listed within this thread were leaving also, along with you.....sorry it ain't so.....my intent was to make a Blue Clicky THING to link to a Handle's Messiah, HALLELUAH!!!!! Chorus....unfortunately, I was too yellow and it turned out GREENp> (it would not have mattered since they arn't joining you...) Perhaps, you might consider, "crossing-over"....to the denizions of the deep, like Groucho Marx WEquestion, "Whether we want to ever be a member of any club, or organization....that would consider us a member."
Then again, you probably, are an AMERICAN,,,,,,and all of the sociality texts, aka "Social Ecology" texts, claim that AMERICANS are joiners....they just WANT to belong.....damn the organization I just want the pin!!! |

If I've learned anything, playing the kind of unpopular music that I've been in love with for the last twentyfive years or so, I've learned that..... well, I guess I ain't learned enough yet to stop playing that crazy stuff and get myself a real job, so everything is gonna be a struggle. I'll check your site and keep up with you there. Saw ya later, Reggie Miles |

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 23 Jan 00 - 11:23 PM Mike, When my hard drive died and I had to have a new one installed, I lost everything. You know, no backup. The first time I logged back on the Mudcat, I bookmarked the site before I set my cookie. Then I had the same problem you had, I couldn't get logged in because my name and code word were already taken. This all was before the recent discomfiture. You may want to try going to Mudcat directly and not use a bookmark. See, if that makes a difference. If you leave, I am sorry to see you go. You will have been driven away by those who want to drive people away. Is that how you want the story to end? Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: Help Is On the Way From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Jan 00 - 12:42 AM Hi, everybody - I suppose a lot of people are getting concerned about cookie resets, now that they appear as "guest" if their cookie isn't right. I've got it pretty well worked out, and should be able to get things fixed for you quick. I'm blissfully retired now, so chances are good that I'll be able to help you before hard-working Max can. Just post a message in the Help Forum (click), or you can find my e-mail address at "BBC's Mudcat Resources," or you can click on my name below to send me e-mail. If you contact me by e-mail, give me your Mudcat user name, your real name, and your e-mail address. If you have had another e-mail address you might have listed on your Mudcat registration, I need that, too. -Joe Offer- (I'll send an e-mail to Mike and get his cookie back for him) |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Áine Date: 24 Jan 00 - 12:47 AM Thank you for all your efforts, Joe! And be sure and tell Mike that he has a song in his honor. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Jan 00 - 05:54 AM Áine - It seems to fit with the tune Woodie Guthrie used for Deportees (Plane Crash at Los Gatos.) Glad you like it.First song I've actually written on-line, and first of what is alleged to be the new century. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Peg Date: 24 Jan 00 - 10:47 AM i think this show of support is very nice and bravo to all you computer whizzes who help make these pesky problems right again. But what is missing in this thread is some perspective. Leaving the forum because you can't log on as your old name? Come on! Mike, you sound like a smart guy; is this really worth your getting in a huff about? Clearly people value your word and want you to stay. Me, too. Especially if your only reason for leaving has to do with some silly computer glitsch which is, admittedly, frustrating, but certainly not the end of the world... my response would be to simply choose a new name and move on...I know you are frustrated but this is not worth your leaving forever. This is just the latest of what will surely be a never-ending stream of little problems that will afflict our Forum as we jettison forward ever more fleetly into the Computer Age... Let us all reflect upon our lives...and remember those days before the Internet; when we stayed in touch by telephone or, gasp! by letter!!! when cookies were delightful homemade concoctions containing lots of butter, brown sugar and vanilla, or, if store-bought, plenty of partially-hydrogenated oils and corn syrup... when we searched long and hard to connect with those of like mind, at festivals or concerts or conventions or pubs or dances...when finding lyrics to an obscure Scottish song was like diving for needles in a peat bog...when jumping on a soapbox or indulging in a good-natured rant on a topic we felt passionately (like, say, folk music)about could only be done in front of our partners or, maybe, our cats... The Internet is a great gift and a wonder...it has brought us all together. We mustn't let its flaws drive us apart. Remember how mail used to be delivered by guys on horseback? They'd make mail runs several times per day, such that in Victorian times many of the well-to-do could exchange 3 or 4 letters per day, or more? Now we are submerged in junk mail and advertising such that our important correspondence takes days to reach us, even though we have replaced horses with planes... same with the Internet; it is glutted with garbage; this is bound to have some effect on its more noble uses. Let us praise the ease of communication it has brought us; and not get too bent out of shape when it throws us a curve ball once in a while... peg

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 24 Jan 00 - 04:16 PM Thanks for all the many kind words and good advice from so many nice people, and a BIG thanks to Joe Offer who called me long distance (I changed servers last year, and the Mudcat didn't have my new email) to help straighten this out. I guess we'll get this sorted out somehow. I was more upset with the events here at the Mudcat that led up to this than I was at the actual technical difficulties (which were no worse than you might encounter anywhere when you log on). I tried to convey in my initial post (somewhat unsucessfully) that I wasn't leaving only because I couldn't post under my own name, as Peg thought (probably due to my failure to express myself clearly), but because I had begun to perceive the Mudcat as no longer being a friendly, comfortable place to hang out. I believe that Roger in Baltimoe is absolutely right (and I thank him for his wisdom), If any of us are driven away by people who want to drive others away, then they have prevailed. As I re-read my initial posting, I seem to come off as being a petulant cry-baby, and I apologize to everyone for contributing to a climate of unpleasantness that has shown itself lately. I guess we are either, as we used to say, "Part of the problem, or part of the solution" To those who have asked me to stay, thank you very much. To those who said they would miss me, thank you very much. To those who offered technical advice, thank you too, very much. I'll be proud to stay here and slog through the trenches with the rest of you. And a big thanks to Joe Offer. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Jan 00 - 04:36 PM And from an old VISTA volunteer....THAT is the person I knew you were!!! I'd say welcome back but as far as I'm concerned, you were never gone....just one of those "trigger moments" that all of us have. Now go ahead and kick back and enjoy some Neil Young.(:<)) Spaw |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 24 Jan 00 - 06:07 PM Enjoy Neil Young? Why? Is he finally being drawn and quartered? And how would we tell his cries of agony from his usual "singing"? |

Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Amos Date: 24 Jan 00 - 06:52 PM I'd suggest we ask Joe to change the name of this thread to "Leaving Mudcat--Not!" -- except that I hate that colloquialism. It kind of reads like there a Dust bowl exodus going on. All these entries about leaving Mudcat Too. Misleading, is what it is! A. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,_gargoyle Date: 25 Jan 00 - 12:30 AM Joe....what is to prevent a "devious sort of soul" from simply, applying different random numbers, within the parameters of the "cookie ID" noting the name and thereby assuming identities....other than the original one????
It appears to be one of the simpliest of "hacks" possible. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jan 00 - 04:24 AM Well, Garg, nothing's unhackable, but let's not go there. Do we want an impenetrable fortress, or do we want a friendly place for people to hang out and talk about folk music? I think we should use reasonable prudence, and then rely on people's good will. This place is like a library - what good is it, if all the books are locked up? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Max Date: 26 Jan 00 - 02:44 PM The cookie ID is a very large complicated number made up of specific meaningfull data. Selecting one at random would be impossible.
If anyone has any technical troubles, contact me or Joe. We always do anything and everything to sort it out for you. I have seen every imaginable problem, so one simple message with specific information is all it will take. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Jan 00 - 04:17 PM "I have seen every imaginable problem." That is impressive! Hell of a T-shirt slogan that.
How come you in the USA are messing around with amateursa like Gore and Bush for President when you've got Max?
Oh yeah, there's an age limitation isn't there. Even if he didn't have better things to do with his time already. |
Subject: RE: Mudcats For President From: Amos Date: 26 Jan 00 - 04:32 PM I think running Max and Joe for the White House would be a first rate notion. A good website, and the democratic process would just about run itself, as demonstrated by M'Cat. A. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Mike Billo Date: 26 Jan 00 - 05:03 PM The fact of the matter is, that even with the VERY capable assistance of Joe Offer, it took 30 min. of constant work to get me reconnected. This followed the half hour of frustration that caused me to angrily start this thread. Apparently, most have been able to reset their cookie with no difficulty whatsoever, but I had a hell of a time even with Joe's help. I suppose that it could be said that the new security measures will weed out the faint-hearted and none but the most steadfast will be able to post on the Mudcat Cafe without GUEST in front of their name, but I wonder how many who might have a contribution to make to this community will say "To Hell with it"? Obviously, you can't prove a negative, so we'll never know, but I suspect that there are probably some who have been discouraged by this process. I'd like to emphasize that my difficulties seem to be an anomaly, but maybe Max and Joe (who do a GREAT job, hats off to them, and my thanks again to Joe.)might want to take a look at the temporary security measures, and see if they're pleased with what they see. I'd like to take this oppurtunity, to again, thank the folks who had so many kind words for me, and brought me to my senses. Even with technical foul-ups, this is a great place. |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: MMario Date: 26 Jan 00 - 05:26 PM I may be totally wrong here, but I don't believe the cookie problems and the the additional identification on posts are connected. The changes Max made to implement the "guest" stuff didn't make me reset my cookie on ANY of the machines I use. The "guest" designation is handy in several ways, because now you know without having to check the listings whether or not someone is capable of private messages, if a regular comes in as "guest" you know they are either away from their base computer and/or having problems. The implementation may be temporary, but the overall procedure seems sound. my $0.02 |
Subject: RE: Leaving Mudcat too From: Jeri Date: 26 Jan 00 - 05:48 PM MMario, I don't think they're related either. Well, except if someone hasn't logged in for a while and doesn't like suddenly being called "guest," tries to log in and has problems. Maybe cookieless posters' names could just show up in a different color or italics, or just have an asterisk or something. I've never had a cookie problem, (knock on wood) but if I did, I think the first thing I would do would be to ask for help. Seriously, I think cookie monsters mainly go after folks who are already members, not new people who are just becoming members. |
