Subject: Leaving Mudcat too From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 23 Jan 00 - 04:34 PM This morning I discovered that my postings list me as "GUEST" Mike Billo. I assumed that I needed to reset my cookie as a result of the security measures taken due to someone recently using the name of a Mudcat member other than themself. Well, after the past half hour spent wrestling with the "help" and membership features, I have learned the following; 1. After 50 years as Mike Billo, I can no longer be Mike Billo, because that name is already in use by someone (presumably, me, Mike Billo) 2; I can no longer use my code word, because that too, is already in use ( again, must be that rascal, ME, Mike Billo) 3. I can't post as Mike Billo because recent security measures have identified me as a "Guest" and not the real Mike Billo. 4. None of the 'help' features are any help at all. The irresponsible behavior of someone who thought they were playing a prank, has caused a paranoid mindset that has made this place a bummer. In an effort to protect identity, you've actually robbed me of mine. There are many here whose opinions I have respected, and whose knowledge and observations I have learned from. I'd like to think that I have contributed a bit myself, but (speaking only for myself) the Mudcat has become more trouble than it's worth. Adios |

Click that and follow the notes. I changed computers recently and it needed my cookie placed where it could find it. Now all works fine. |

Make sure you are logged out and then go to membership. Near the top, it says something like "If you are already a member but your details don't appear, click here." Follow that link and you will be prompted for your user name. Supply that and hit submit and you should be prompted for your password. With any luck when you supply that, you will be re-instated. Jon

The first time I logged back on the Mudcat, I bookmarked the site before I set my cookie. Then I had the same problem you had, I couldn't get logged in because my name and code word were already taken. This all was before the recent discomfiture. You may want to try going to Mudcat directly and not use a bookmark. See, if that makes a difference. If you leave, I am sorry to see you go. But what is missing in this thread is some perspective. Leaving the forum because you can't log on as your old name? Come on! Mike, you sound like a smart guy; is this really worth your getting in a huff about? Clearly people value your word and want you to stay. Me, too. Especially if your only reason for leaving has to do with some silly computer glitsch which is, admittedly, frustrating, but certainly not the end of the world... my response would be to simply choose a new name and move on...I know you are frustrated but this is not worth your leaving forever. This is just the latest of what will surely be a never-ending stream of little problems that will afflict our Forum as we jettison forward ever more fleetly into the Computer Age... Let us all reflect upon our lives...and remember those days before the Internet; when we stayed in touch by telephone or, gasp! by letter!!! when cookies were delightful homemade concoctions containing lots of butter, brown sugar and vanilla, or, if store-bought, plenty of partially-hydrogenated oils and corn syrup... when we searched long and hard to connect with those of like mind, at festivals or concerts or conventions or pubs or dances...when finding lyrics to an obscure Scottish song was like diving for needles in a peat bog...when jumping on a soapbox or indulging in a good-natured rant on a topic we felt passionately (like, say, folk music)about could only be done in front of our partners or, maybe, our cats... The Internet is a great gift and a wonder...it has brought us all together. We mustn't let its flaws drive us apart. Remember how mail used to be delivered by guys on horseback? They'd make mail runs several times per day, such that in Victorian times many of the well-to-do could exchange 3 or 4 letters per day, or more? Now we are submerged in junk mail and advertising such that our important correspondence takes days to reach us, even though we have replaced horses with planes... same with the Internet; it is glutted with garbage; this is bound to have some effect on its more noble uses. Let us praise the ease of communication it has brought us; and not get too bent out of shape when it throws us a curve ball once in a while... peg

I guess we'll get this sorted out somehow. I was more upset with the events here at the Mudcat that led up to this than I was at the actual technical difficulties (which were no worse than you might encounter anywhere when you log on). I tried to convey in my initial post (somewhat unsucessfully) that I wasn't leaving only because I couldn't post under my own name, as Peg thought (probably due to my failure to express myself clearly), but because I had begun to perceive the Mudcat as no longer being a friendly, comfortable place to hang out. I believe that Roger in Baltimoe is absolutely right (and I thank him for his wisdom), If any of us are driven away by people who want to drive others away,then they have prevailed. As I re-read my initial posting, I seem to come off as being a petulant cry-baby, and I apologize to everyone for contributing to a climate of unpleasantness that has shown itself lately. I guess we are either, as we used to say, "Part of the problem, or part of the solution" To those who have asked me to stay, thank you very much. To those who said they would miss me, thank you very much. To those who offered technical advice, thank you too, very much. This followed the half hour of frustration that caused me to angrily start this thread. Apparently, most have been able to reset their cookie with no difficulty whatsoever, but I had a hell of a time even with Joe's help. I suppose that it could be said that the new security measures will weed out the faint-hearted and none but the most steadfast will be able to post on the Mudcat Cafe without GUEST in front of their name, but I wonder how many who might have a contribution to make to this community will say "To Hell with it"? Obviously, you can't prove a negative, so we'll never know, but I suspect that there are probably some who have been discouraged by this process. I'd like to emphasize that my difficulties seem to be an anomaly, but maybe Max and Joe (who do a GREAT job,hats off to them, and my thanks again to Joe.)might want to take a look at the temporary security measures, and see if they're pleased with what they see. I'd like to take this oppurtunity, to again, thank the folks who had so many kind words for me, and brought me to my senses. Even with technical foul-ups, this is a great place. |

The changes Max made to implement the "guest" stuff didn't make me reset my cookie on ANY of the machines I use. The "guest" designation is handy in several ways, because now you know without having to check the listings whether or not someone is capable of private messages, if a regular comes in as "guest" you know they are either away from their base computer and/or having problems. The implementation may be temporary, but the overall procedure seems sound. my $0.02 |

Well, except if someone hasn't logged in for a while and doesn't like suddenly being called "guest," tries to log in and has problems. Maybe cookieless posters' names could just show up in a different color or italics, or just have an asterisk or something. I've never had a cookie problem, (knock on wood) but if I did, I think the first thing I would do would be to ask for help. Seriously, I think cookie monsters mainly go after folks who are already members, not new people who are just becoming members. |

I missed all the unpleasantness with the imposters. When I returned yesterday, I saw the GUEST designation and my big fear was somebody else might appropriate my nickname, which I cherish dearly. Gone so long I forgot my password, but Max or Joe fixed me up within a day. Glad to be back. By the way, back in the real world, the Oregon legislature just made identity theft a crime. |

I've got a standard e-mail message worked up now, and it gives step-by-step instructions for logging on. It seems to work pretty well, without getting too. If you encounter difficulties that aren't covered by the standard procedures, be sure to let us know.
