Subject: Obit: Zulya Kamalova (1969-2024) From: Tony Rees Date: 22 Sep 24 - 02:15 AM I am very sad to relay to Mudcatters that one of Australia's favourite "world music" and folk performers, the Russian-born singer and musician Zulya Kamalova, died 4 days ago from the cancer from which she had been suffering from for some time. She was just 55. She came to Australia in 1991 and lived here ever since, but toured in Europe as well, more recently with her band "The Children of the Underground". Zulya resided initially in Hobart for some 9-10 years before relocating to Melbourne, where she remained and was most recently the Director of Music for the acclaimed "Boite" world music venue there. More information at https://www.pbsfm.org.au/news/vale-zulya-kamalova and other places including SBS radio/television in Australia. RIP Zulya, a shining performer who brought joy wherever she appeared. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Zulya Kamalova (1969-2024) From: Tony Rees Date: 22 Sep 24 - 02:20 AM To honour her memory I have just created some stills from a 1999 video that I have and uploaded them here, along with another couple from a 1995 festival (the first image is someone else's, not mine): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Zulya_Kamalova While the image quality suffers a little from not being taken via the usual means, I do think they convey a lot of Zulya's character which endeared her to many. - Tony |

Subject: RE: Obit: Zulya Kamalova (1969-2024) From: Tony Rees Date: 29 Jan 25 - 02:32 AM As a small tribute to Zulya, I have uploaded the 1999 video spot of her in performance to Youtube, see Zulya Kamalova - Hobart 1999 . A fairly brief appearance, just 20 mins or so, as part of a longer multi-artist charity show (raising money for victims of the war in Kosovo at that time). However hopefully a nice memory for those who knew Zulya at that tine or later, or maybe even for those who did not... Regards - Tony |
