Somebody emailed me and suggested that true-search.io might be a good replacement for Mudcat's search engine, which is not working. Anybody know anything about this search engine?

Try it for searching figurehead carver Mudcat. The results are very nice.

WOW!

Between this and SRS search suggestions my
"Ambient Findability" skills just quadrupled.

The W.C. Fields quote request in the above doubles back to the original MC thread request. That member has an interesting "lower-kingdom" background. I will go no more a roving for his "needs."

Thanks, Joe. It does indeed yield cleaner results, and one can control search terms better.

Apparently, it's not actually a search engine per se, it gathers results from engines using better parameters than we casual searchers use, and filters out the debris we have become used to seeing.

I haven't experimented much, but I hope it has that 'filter out AI' function StillyRiverSage told us about.

debris! yes!!!

I was recently looking for an old Australian expression so typed in the 'word, definition, Macquarie dictionary' (UK has Oxford, US has Merriam Webster, we have Macquarie) & I got a lot of useless rubbish, not one suggestion mentioned our dictionary & I even looked at 2 pages of the crap.

I'll bookmark true search & head off to the AI thread & get Stilly's function

Tech: Do Google searches w/o AI 'results' on page -
I find the Google AI results to be obnoxious and skip past them once I realize the AI graphic sparkle is appearing, but more often than not use the https://udm14.com/ website. The problem with that is that you can't see what you're typing in once your typed text reaches their "AI-Free Search" button. You can keep typing, it's just not in view.

I did that when you posted, and several times again since. The results are wildly inconsistent. One thing it does know about me is my approximate location, from the IP address, so it could give different results in the US or wherever.

The most interesting thing is that it tells me where it's getting each result from. Initially they came mainly from Quant (another meta-search-engine, European, that's 60% Bing). This morning it's all from 'Google cache'. Odd.

I've set Firefox to use Quant by default for a while. No AI, and the results are presented in the old style - much the same as DuckDuckGo. But, as you'd expect, it's not as good at guessing what I had in mind.

Essentially, I don't think a meta-search-engine that claims privacy - and therefore not to hold data about me - and also claims to give more 'relevant' results, is plausible. One that doesn't sell my data to advertisers is, but then what's its business model?

LOL, Dave, you're right, what is their angle? Let's see, who doesn't need to earn money in the marketplace? Governments and NGOs. The Deep State? It's amazing how we all use new sites with little idea what each one's agenda is. How thrilled J. Edgar Hoover would be at how we all allow our data to be harvested by all and sundry.

And by the way, I'm not recommending true-search.io - I still like the results I get from Google, although I wish I could access their cache like I used to. It was a handy substitute for Mudcat when Mudcat was down.

Just FYI

"Norton Safe Web has analyzed true-search.io for safety and security problems. The Norton rating is a result of our automated analysis system. The rating was "Caution" This website may have a small number of threats."

However:

Virus Total Test = 0 out of 96 vendors = "No security vendors flagged this URL as malicious"
