Subject: BS: Wolf Moon From: keberoxu Date: 11 Jan 25 - 07:13 PM January 13 (Tuesday) is the full moon known as the Wolf Moon. Anybody feel like howling? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: gillymor Date: 12 Jan 25 - 08:14 AM Gonna go out yakking on Tuesday looking for sea trout and maybe a redfish. There is something magical about being on Estero Bay under a full moon. It's also supposed pass near Mars from our vantage point. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 14 Jan 25 - 02:49 PM This wolf moon is huge and bright. The worst moon is the hunger moon. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 15 Jan 25 - 05:01 AM Who gets to name the full moons? Why "Wolf"? Are there alternative names for the same full moon, used by different countries? DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 15 Jan 25 - 05:10 AM Looking at Mars from the moon this month |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: gillymor Date: 15 Jan 25 - 07:34 AM We watched it pass in front of Mars last night. What a moment on the water. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 15 Jan 25 - 08:22 AM I assume the names of various moons that sound native American are translated Indian names. The planets are Roman and modern names. Things like asteroids are latin, aster means star and oid means like. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: gillymor Date: 15 Jan 25 - 08:58 AM What is the Wolf Moon?-USA Today |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 15 Jan 25 - 09:28 AM Is the September/early October full moon still called the Harvest Moon in Australia, even though it is Spring there? DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 15 Jan 25 - 05:02 PM Oz has its own aboriginal language, wisdom, and teachings. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 16 Jan 25 - 04:16 AM ... which leads back to my ealier question:- Are there alternative names for the same full moon, used by different countries? (Ignoring translations from English of "Wolf Moon", "Harvest Moon", etc.) DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 16 Jan 25 - 04:45 AM Oz has its own aboriginal language, wisdom, and teachings. So does the USA. Do Native Americans have a naming system for full moons? If so, are the same names used by all tribes? DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 16 Jan 25 - 02:55 PM Doug, you could always do an anthropological PhD dissertation on global full moon naming. It sounds like it might be more poetic and thought provoking than exploring the tachyon. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 16 Jan 25 - 02:58 PM This month Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury all appear near the waning full moon. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: keberoxu Date: 16 Jan 25 - 06:04 PM The hunger moon is next month. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 16 Jan 25 - 07:24 PM Donuel, I am interested in the traditions of different cultures and how they vary, one to another. Does it seem unreasonable to you that I should ask for information in the non-music section of a site that deals with traditional music and folklore? DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 18 Jan 25 - 04:26 PM I admire curious minds. wolf moon |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 18 Jan 25 - 10:13 PM Tales can provide clues to the past and even help fill in gaps in scientific knowledge about long-ago geological phenomena. Velokovsky did it with cosmic events and other people have used myths that the Egyptians, Sumerians, Hebrews, and Christians all share. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Doug Chadwick Date: 19 Jan 25 - 06:15 AM Do Native Americans have a naming system for full moons? If so, are the same names used by all tribes? A secondary link, from the article that gillymor linked to (15 Jan 25 - 08:58 AM), gives some explanation. Alternative names, used by several different tribes, are given. In fact, more than one name may be used for the same tull moon within a single tribe. I would still like to know what anglophone Australians call the September/early October full moon. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Wolf Moon From: Donuel Date: 19 Jan 25 - 10:23 AM What I know about naive Americans, like most people here, is very little. There are small reservations scattered about that are virtually unknown. I have met several tribesmen during the summer and learned about their dress and symbology. The glowing pride these people have is powerful. A few tribes have learned how to exploit degenerate gamblers at their reservations which are outside certain US laws. Tribes like the Hopi and Zuni have a verbal history that involves UFOs. |
