Hi all,

I just want to share an email I received from Amnesty International this week.

"January 26 is fast approaching. Together, hundreds of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander folk and non-Indigenous allies will march in solidarity across the country, standing firm with the message that January 26 is not a date to celebrate. Will you join us?

"This year, post-referendum and in the lead up to a Federal election, we have seen a frightening uptick in the amount of racism that First Nations communities are experiencing – so we want to make sure that there is a huge groundswell of support from both allies and First Nations activists within our people-powered movement!

"I really hope you will join us this January 26. If you would like more information about attending a rally, our team has put together this Invasion Day Activism Toolkit with all the information you need to stand in solidarity this weekend; your local rallies and events, how to join an Amnesty contingent, why we march, some resources to watch, read, share, wear and listen, social media tiles to share and printable posters.

"For many First Nations Peoples, January 26 is a day of mourning. It recalls the injustice that First Nations Peoples have experienced since the start of colonisation. It’s a stark reminder of the ongoing trauma and injustices that they still face today – from disproportionate rates of incarceration and deaths in custody, to vast health inequities, and the continual desecration of sacred sites. Celebrating on this day overlooks these painful realities and the resilience of First Nations peoples in the face of ongoing colonisation. Celebrating on this day fails to recognise more than 65,000 years of ongoing survival of the oldest living culture in the world.

"As Uncle Rodney says, 6.2 million Australians voted yes in the Referendum, and we need as many of our allies and activists as possible to walk with us in solidarity on January 26, to show our decision makers that this is not a date to celebrate. With you by our side, we'll continue the fight for Indigenous Rights and better outcomes for First Nations communities. Thank you for your ongoing support of Amnesty and standing up against injustice."

And to make this also a music thread here are some songs to sing by First Nations and other performers:

AU Sign in                                                                                                       Yothu Yindi - Treaty

Archie Roach - Took The Children Away

Indigenous leaders, inventor and swimming coach among those recognised in 2025 Australia Day honours list

"WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this story includes the name and image of an Indigenous person who has died.

"Aboriginal leaders, domestic violence prevention advocates and a Scrabble champion are among the 732 Australians who have been recognised in the Australia Day honours list.

"Marking its 50th year in 2025, Australia's honours system celebrates exceptional achievements and outstanding service to the community.

...

"Galarrwuy Yunupi?u AC

"A giant of Australia's land rights movement, the late Galarrwuy Yunupi?u has been posthumously awarded the country's highest honour, the Companion of the Order of Australia.

"Born near Yirrkala along the NT's north-east coast, Dr Yunupi?u helped establish and then led the powerful Northern Land Council, becoming a powerful advocate for the interests of Indigenous people across the country.

"The Yol?u elder led calls for treaty and delivered the Barunga Statement — an important painted document representing the unified will of traditional owners across the NT — to the Australian government.

"Daughter Binmila Yunupi?u remembered her father as a "born leader".

"'A ceremonial leader of the highest degree, my father was our Dalkarra (the ceremonial leader of the Gumatj clan), and a Djungaya (a leader for his mother clans),' Ms Yunupi?u said.

"'He was gong dhulang (the holder of our religious designs and icons), and gong bilma (the holder of our song-cycles).'

"Dr Yunupi?u is named in this article with the permission of his family, who have welcomed this national recognition of his life's work.

"'He was a Yolngu man, an Australian — being born from the very bones of the country,' Dr Yunupi?u's brother, Djawa Yunupi?u, said.

"'He has now returned to our land, to be with our ancestors.'

"Dr Yunupi?u died in 2023 surrounded by family on his land at Gunyangara in north-east Arnhem Land."

Protesters gather at Invasion Day rallies across Australia

"Crowds of people are gathering at Invasion Day rallies across the country, backing calls to abolish or change the date of Australia Day.
"
January 26 marks the anniversary of the day that Arthur Phillip hoisted the British flag at Sydney Cove in 1788.

"But the date is referred to by many Indigenous communities as Invasion Day or Survival Day."

This reminds me of the Native American response to
Thanksgiving Day,
with its theme of colonization,
in the American western hemisphere.

Conchy Calenda pedantry: Australia Day = U.S. Columbus Day. The Thanksgiving holiday, albeit equally distasteful to the “The Left,” is a different Day. Both the latter are myopic revisions of fundamentally flawed histories. Australia Day is historically correct for usual dead male names and dates, pop-quiz academics.

Thanks for the clarification, Phil d'Conch.

keberoxu, I knew what you meant but didn't pick up that it wasn't Thanksgiving because I forgot about Columbus Day.
