Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: RTim Date: 28 Jan 25 - 02:44 PM The Ruined Maid By Thomas Hardy "O 'Melia, my dear, this does everything crown! Who could have supposed I should meet you in Town? And whence such fair garments, such prosperi-ty?" — "O didn't you know I'd been ruined?" said she. — "You left us in tatters, without shoes or socks, Tired of digging potatoes, and spudding up docks; And now you've gay bracelets and bright feathers three!" — "Yes: that's how we dress when we're ruined," said she. — "At home in the barton you said thee' and thou,' And thik oon,' and theäs oon,' and t'other'; but now Your talking quite fits 'ee for high compa-ny!" — "Some polish is gained with one's ruin," said she. — "Your hands were like paws then, your face blue and bleak But now I'm bewitched by your delicate cheek, And your little gloves fit as on any la-dy!" — "We never do work when we're ruined," said she. — "You used to call home-life a hag-ridden dream, And you'd sigh, and you'd sock; but at present you seem To know not of megrims or melancho-ly!" — "True. One's pretty lively when ruined," said she. — "I wish I had feathers, a fine sweeping gown, And a delicate face, and could strut about Town!" — "My dear — a raw country girl, such as you be, Cannot quite expect that. You ain't ruined," said she. |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jan 25 - 02:53 PM This is a folk music discussion forum. We have no need to become a dumping ground for unsorted poems that are copy-pasted from other Websites. If you want to talk about a particular poet or poem or collection of poems, that's another matter. There are other Websites that collect poetry. One I like is the Poetry Foundation. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/thomas-hardy |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: The Sandman Date: 28 Jan 25 - 03:04 PM Joe, you may not be aware that the poems of hardy have been set to music, here is one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LQi8OnqYSs |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jan 25 - 03:39 PM Yes, I am quite aware that many poems have been set to music, including those of Thomas Hardy. Historic poems are readily available and nicely indexed at many excellent websites. There is no need to duplicate those collections here. This is a discussion forum. If you want to post something and discuss it, fine. If you want to just dump shit here, use a toilet. That being said, the poem Tim posted is a gem, and certainly worthy of discussion. But you, Sandman, have not posted a single poem or bit of information in this thread. Joe Offer, Mudcat MUSIC Editor |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: The Sandman Date: 28 Jan 25 - 04:39 PM Christmas: 1924 by Thomas Hardy " Peace upon earth!" was said. We sing it, And pay a million priests to bring it. After two thousand years of mass We've got as far as poison-gas. |

Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: GUEST,henryp Date: 29 Jan 25 - 07:21 AM Joe works very hard to provide us with a forum for discussion. The least we can do is make his job as easy as possible, and go along with his wishes. |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy MUSIC Tim Laycock From: Vic Smith Date: 29 Jan 25 - 07:54 AM The tunes in the Hardy manuscripts, ones play by his own family and ancestors are one of the richest sources in England. His novels also have a number of fascinating references to the playing and singing of traditional songs and tunes; the richest of which is in Under The Greenwood Tree. The books also have a number with descriptions of dances invillages and who remembers Dave Swarbrick having the time of his life playing for dancing in the film of Far from the Madding Crowd.? |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy MUSIC Tim Laycock From: The Sandman Date: 29 Jan 25 - 08:02 AM yes indeed, Vic I do remember Dave playing in the film. The other thing about that film is that peter Dashwood taught Terence stamp and julie Christie the dancing and confirmed that isla cameron did the singing, and julie christie mimed |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy MUSIC Tim Laycock From: Vic Smith Date: 29 Jan 25 - 08:19 AM One of the times that we booked Jake Walton at our club in Lewes, he asked if he could bring his girlfriend along with him. Well, of course. During one of his sets, he called up his girlfriend to sing a song to his hurdy-gurdy accompaniments. She has a sweet pleasant voice. Her name was Julie Christie - yes that one! |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: GUEST,splott Date: 29 Jan 25 - 01:33 PM Yes, let's change the title to 'Hardys pems'! Why does Mudcat tolerate this moronic buffoon? Bring back Steve Shaw! |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy Poems From: Acorn4 Date: 30 Jan 25 - 04:23 AM Brass Monkey's setting of "Going and Staying" is rather good I always feel:- Going and Staying |
Subject: RE: Thomas Hardy MUSIC Tim Laycock From: The Sandman Date: 01 Feb 25 - 02:06 PM Then it is peculiar that she did not sing in the film, I wonder what was the reason that Isla was chosen to sing ,we shall never know. |
