Great Burns night story related by fiddler Alasdair Fraser: He was at a Burns night some years ago that was attended by Charleton Heston. Mr. Heston was kilted and reading the traditional Burns night poem about the Haggis. He was doing it very dramatically, waving his arms around and such. In the back of the hall, Alasdair was standing next to a wee piper from Glasgow. The piper leaned over to him and whispered, "You know Alasdair, it's not every day you see Moses readin' from The Haggis!"

I'll be at the Kildare House, chowing down on haggis, swilling pints of scotch, enjoying the readings and the gentle strains of Tartan Army...

Me wonders how one gets to be the OFFICIAL Roburt Burns website; I find that a comical notion seeing as he's been dead hundreds o' years now...

It is a major snowstorm scene here in Boston; anyone know of any Burns Suppers going on?

If the weather is more passable tomorrow night I will go sing a Burns song or two at the singers' club at Paddy Burke's--which I missed last week (first time back after several weeks of flu and cold related voice problems...calls to mind how Burns died: he inspected distilleries for a living and often rode on horseback 300 or more miles per week...when he began having respiratory problems his doctor prescribed what was then a popular oddity: the "ocean cure," in which the patient swam in the Atlantic, even in winter...would Robbie have lived into his forties if he had not taken his doc's advice so eagerly?)

Also missed Tony Cuffe and Gerry O'Sullivan's Burns tribute concert this past Saturday...again, the cold (4o below windchill) and a pal cancelling at the last minute...this silly weather has been turning me into a veritable recluse...

I am leaving work early today and going cross country skiing, come hell or deep drifts...

and will polish off a wee dram o' Scotch in Robbie's honor, afterwards...

Can I be the first to wish everyone a happy Burns Night? It always brings back memories of the Ian Campbell Folk Group's celebrations in Birmingham (England!), with the haggis being piped in and old Dave Campbell reciting Burns' poem to the "Great Chieftain o' the pudden race". (If you've never eaten haggis, let me recommend it.)
