In true Loony Tunes manner, the Disgrace to the Colour Orange has pelted off the edge of the cliff and screeched to a halt on fresh air, and is busily bullshitting soliloquising to camera. Nobody has had the courage to suggest he look down .... yet.

PS: Donuel's contributed two apposite jokes to the current Jokes thread. Enjoy.

Deadly E-Coli tainted lettuce has infected people in Indiana but Doge firings have left the Lettuce Grower unidentified. The FDA is in bad straits after being decimated. All we know publicly is that one grower is responsible. Maybe I am being picky, but there are hazards on the horizon that may go unreported.

Trump and Don Jr. have become crypto billionaires recently.
The new criminal trend is to kidnap and torture crypto billionaires until they give up their crypto wallet passcodes in both the US and Europe. Nobody saw this coming. Untraceable billions are too much to ignore for criminals. Should crypto billionaires leave their house anymore?

Most of my posts are about stuff that is new to me.

Oh, another poor diddums, whose Tesla sales have halved and whose reputation has gone down in Europe as well, mainly due to his neo-fascist comments and activities. Sad! (Not!)

(BTW my new name for Tesla is Fukla. I am so tempted to go and alter the brand name posters on a local Tesla showroom but I suspect the CCTV would be working to the max so I will restrain myself.)

Elon Musk criticises Donald Trump's tax bill for expanding US federal deficit

"In short: Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who previously spearheaded the Trump administration's efforts to downsize the US government, has publicly criticised the US president's signature tax policy.

"Mr Musk warned the bill would increase the US deficit and was undermining his work at the Department of Government Efficiency.
What's next?

"The 'big beautiful bill', which could increase the federal debt by upwards of $US3 trillion, is currently before the US Senate."

DtG, there will be leaks. If you thought the testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson, assistant to his Chief of Staff (first Trump term) was interesting, I can hardly wait until insiders spill the beans from this time around. Eventually it will happen.

We're still getting that "drinking from a fire hydrant" flood the zone effect from the Drumpf staff. But in the works, he isn't happy about the "TACO" acronym, of Trump Always Chickens Out" on those tariff pronouncements (each time he backs off the market rises, but when I look at my ROTH-IRA it still isn't up to where it was when Biden left office.) (CNBC story).

King Charles did a thumb-to-the-eyeball move to Trump from Canada by not naming Trump (who was the total reason for the trip) in his remarks.

He is railing against Harvard because he is totally intimidated by really smart people (and the rumor is that he's pissed that his son Barron wasn't accepted but Obama's daughter went to school there, graduating in 2021.)

Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs blocked by US Court of International Trade

There will be appeals against the ruling, and baby-Trump tantrums, and it will come back to the Supreme court and then it depends on how much those Trump-appointed minions want to stay in his good books or whether they have grown a set by now and will stand up and fight for their country.

Point of order: Has the expression (*akkh* *phht*) "liberation day" been discussed? It reminds me of the Colditz prisoner who was quoted as saying that, when the prisoners were all let out by the Allied forces at the end of WW II, one of the first things he did was to "liberate a chicken" from one of the local farms.

Trump canceled all our plan A's.
All our plan B's are unknown.

I grew up learning that America was a melting pot of many nations, cultures, and religions. America was the breadbasket of the world,
20 years ago in the midst of prosperity evangelism, and immigrant racism, despite the fact that immigrants harvested our food.
I was taught life is a tight rope act that needs a safety net.

I saw a local meaness from people who even objected to people getting an ambulance if they could not pay for it, since the taxpayer was then responsible.

Now the Trump Christian right does not care that 5 African shit hole nations will have a million people starve to death without USAID. They say America comes first and should not feed the world. People need 2,200 calories a day to live. Former USAID recipients now get 600 calories a day. Next month could be zero.

While Musk has lost billions of personal money and government money, Trump has gained billions so Musk is finished with his reign of terror, leaving America without a safety net.

In the Trump bid for racial purity there is an extreme example that could expand the concept of immigrant or foreigner. The Third Reich.
Just replace immigrant wherever the Word Jew or Jewish appears.
Of course the Nazis included gypsies, intelligentsia/critics and the handicapped in their purge.

1. Standard Definition of a Jew:
Under the Nuremberg Laws (1935), a person with three or more Jewish grandparents was considered Jewish, regardless of their own religious practice or identity.
This meant they looked back two generations to determine Jewish ancestry.
2. "Mischlinge" (Mixed-Race Individuals):
Individuals with one or two Jewish grandparents were classified as "Mischlinge" (mixed-race).
Their status was complicated, and they were subject to varying degrees of persecution and discrimination, often depending on the level of Jewish heritage.
3. More Stringent Requirements (e.g., for SS members):
Certain Nazi organizations, like the Schutzstaffel (SS), had even more stringent requirements for proving "Aryan" ancestry.
To join the SS, a candidate might need to prove that all direct ancestors born since 1750 were not Jewish, requiring genealogical research going back multiple generations.

This came through as a gift article in my Bluesky feed; lets see if it shares over here as well (from someone else's NY Times account).
Opinion by Michelle Goldberg: Elon Musk’s Legacy Is Disease, Starvation and Death

Musk apparently did not anticipate that it would be bad P.R. for the world’s richest man to take food and medicine from the world’s poorest children. The Post reported that he hadn’t foreseen “the intensity of the blowback to his role in politics over the past year.” He’s been doing a series of interviews that Axios called an “image rehab tour.”

From AltNPS today:
Trump’s move to have Elon Musk step aside wasn’t a retreat. It was a distraction. With Musk’s name out of the headlines, many assumed the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had quietly ended. It hasn’t. It’s just changed hands.

Enter Peter Thiel, the billionaire founder of Palantir and close ally of Musk. Thiel and his company are now central to Trump’s newest plan: building a massive government-run database on every American.

Here’s what’s happening:
- Trump signed an executive order in March forcing government agencies to share data.
- Palantir, a company with deep ties to the far-right and known for building surveillance tools, has been tapped to lead the effort.
- DOGE has now been granted access to the U.S. Treasury Department.
- Palantir has already received over $113 million in government funds since Trump returned to office, and just secured a new $795 million contract with the Department of Defense. (Follow the money and see where it goes)

Palantir’s software is already being used inside the Department of Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and more. The company is now in talks with the IRS and Social Security Administration to expand further. This means personal data, from tax returns to medical records, could soon be compiled in one place, under one administration, with little oversight.

This push began under Musk’s leadership at DOGE. Now it’s Thiel’s turn. And make no mistake, this is about power. With a centralized, government-controlled data system, Trump gains new tools to target critics, intimidate dissenters, and go after immigrants.

They want you to think the threat is gone. But it’s growing, and it’s being handed to people who have no business controlling our lives.

Stay informed. Stay loud. This isn’t over. Stop the billionaire takeover!

And I wonder whether Putin has some sort of involvement in these Palantir activities, especially after Trump publicly called him out over Ukraine. Today has been a mental health day on the political action front. I had way too many subscriptions to topical sites; typically I read a good post linked from Bluesky and subscribed to the writer to see what else they have to say. Substack is where a lot of them live and they try to pile on other subscriptions at the same time. I figured out how to avoid most of those but still had way too many. Even when not reading most of them I was seeing the clarion call of alarm from their subject lines every time I opened the email.

An afternoon of sorting and deleting has left me with a small core group of voices I am more likely to actually read when they post. And several of them prudently post only once a week, not every day. To get through the next four years we must pace ourselves.

Meanwhile, more Trump antics:
It’s called the Library of Congress. But Trump claims it’s his.
The case is the latest example of efforts by the Trump administration to erase the traditional lines that separate the branches of government.
The Trump White House has a new target in its campaign to expand executive power: the Library of Congress. Never mind the name — administration lawyers are now arguing that the main research library of the legislative branch doesn’t actually belong to Congress at all.

A legal push to claim the Library as executive turf isn’t a one-off. It’s the latest move in a broader effort by President Donald Trump and his administration to erase the traditional lines that separate the branches of government.

The administration has challenged Congress’s constitutional power of the purse, shrugged off court orders to limit Trump’s powers and unleashed the U.S. DOGE Service on offices outside the executive branch.

They're also going after the National Portrait Gallery, firing the director (a woman). What do you want to bet those black faces on the wall will be moved off view or thinned out considerably.

A war on multiple fronts is likely to result in great destruction but is unlikely to produce a final victory.
There is a Trump war on; the safety net of SS and Medicare, the universities, foreign students, curriculum, big law firms, public health/science, and disaster response.

The war on immigrants has been long-standing, but now relies on bogus emergency war powers.

A sixth war might include a war against individuals Trump despises.
Number seven is certainly his trade war, marked by financial weapons of insane tariffs.
The war on the rule of law and judges is waged by several assassinations on Judges' doorsteps.
Trump isn't a reader but the war on books continues.
Did I mention the war against government workers?

Did someone already mention Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury?

"Sixty years after its original publication, Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 stands as a classic of world literature set in a bleak, dystopian future. Today its message has grown more relevant than ever before.

"Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known."

> checks and balances

Dunno about the balances, but the cheques are all pre-signed, and all blank.

> Enter Peter Thiel

I've seen Peter Thiel described as "arguably the high priest of frontier thinking", in an article in A&G* about the dark side of the "frontier mentality" so beloved of the high technorati. It is no coincidence that the article is peppered with illustrations of bullet holes.

More substantial quotes on request; let it suffice for now that it quotes the historian Frederick Jackson Turner, speaking about said dark side in a presentation in 1893. Yup: the same Frederick Jackson Turner whose 1898 essay, so beloved of the high techorati, popularised the "mythology of the 'frontiersman'".

What if you had the most important thing in the world to tell, but you knew people would not believe you? Would you try? Some do, some don't.
A dangerous place to go is inside the mind of Donald Trump.
First of all, he believes in destiny, which complicates and motivates his crime-driven retribution and self-enrichment.

What does Trump live for? He lives to get even with those who have made fun of him. Second, he lives for money that buys the loyalty he craves.

What would he die for? That doesn't enter his mind as you might expect. Destiny again applies.

What would he kill for? You are already witnessing that.

From Security Quotes of the Week, in last week's Linux Weekly News:

[ ... ] As Jay Freeman put it, using DRM* creates a new law called "Felony Contempt of Business Model." It's a law that has never been passed by any legislature, but is nevertheless enforceable.

In the 25 years I've been fighting anticircumvention laws, I've spoken to many government officials from all over the world about the opportunity that repealing their anticircumvention laws represents. [ ... ]

But every time I pitched this, I got the same answer: "The US Trade Representative forced us to pass this law, and threatened us with tariffs if we didn't pass it." Happy Liberation Day, people – every country in the world is now liberated from the only reason to keep this stupid-ass law on their books.

Interesting article from The Register, which raises the question: Which insiders are the enemy within?

Feds arrest DoD techie, claim he dumped top secret files in park for foreign spies to find

28-year-old alleged to have made multiple drops to folks who turned out to be undercocounts asver FBI agents

A Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) IT specialist is scheduled to appear in court today after being caught by the FBI trying to surreptitiously drop top secret information to a foreign government in a public park.

Nathan Vilas Laatsch, 28, of Alexandria, Virginia, was the subject of an FBI investigation after law enforcers claim they received a tip that Laatsch had advertised his willingness to transmit intelligence to a "friendly foreign government" back in March.

According to the DoJ, Laatsch is alleged to have stated that he did not "agree or align with the values of this administration and intend to act to support the values that the United States at one time stood for." He was therefore "willing to share classified information," feds are claiming.

The IT worker joined the DIA in 2019, held a top secret security clearance, and was part of its Insider Threat Division, which is dedicated to weeding out government personnel that is leaking or could likely leak sensitive information to foreign powers.

"I've given a lot of thought to this before any outreach, and despite the risks, the calculus has not changed," an affidavit submitted by the FBI agent investigating said Laatsch wrote: "I do not see the trajectory of things changing, and do not think it is appropriate or right to do nothing when I am in this position." [ ... ]

FBI director Kash Patel said via X: "This case underscores the persistent risk of insider threats. The FBI remains steadfast in protecting our national security and thanks our law enforcement partners for their critical support."

Apologies for the length of this copy/paste. I lack time to make it shorter* and still do it justice.

Palantír: from palan ("far") and a form of tir- ("to watch").
Television: from Ancient Greek "tele" ("far") and Latin "visio" ("vision","act of seeing, sight...".
There must be some correlation in our nowadays life!

Think of "The Scouring of the Shire" - Saruman died too early in the movie, after returning home the hobbits had to clean up the mess he made in the Shire. I think we can nominate Tim Walz as Frodo, needing to finish the job.

Last year’s Democratic vice-presidential nominee has thrown himself into a robust atonement-and-explanation tour, though aides insist there is no grand strategy.

This Harvard graduation speech is just about as perfect as they come. It has turned up in various venues, I hope people can open it here. It speaks directly to the war that Trump has against the world and diversity, without saying Trump or diversity.

"Global challenges suddenly felt personal. If there's a woman anywhere in the world can't afford a period pad, it makes me poor. If a girl, who skips school, out of fear of harassment, that threatens my dignity. . . . We're starting to believe those who think differently, vote differently, or pray differently, whether they are across the ocean or sitting right next to us, are not just wrong, we mistakenly see them as evil. But it doesn't have to be this way. What I've gained most from Harvard isn't just calculus or regression analysis, is to sit with discomfort. Listen deeply and stay soft in hard times. Because if we still believe in a shared future let us not those who were labeled as enemies, they too, are human. In seeing their humanity we find our own. In the end we do not rise by proving each other wrong, we rise by refusing to let one another go."

"You might disagree with them, but hold onto them."
Listen to the talk. I like the term "Spinning ghost mode." That is usable for future memes.

Trump doesn't have a clue about the people with real needs who are being cast aside so he can give Musk and Bezos tax breaks.

It took the president of Harvard to deliver the first insightful Presidential address in a dozen years.

I have been calling Trump the 'retributionist'.
Today, a book was released that shows that the act of revenge is identical to drug addiction in neurological scans.
It is not surprising that Trump is 'addicted' to revenge.

A normal person without clinical narcissism responds to revenge in a similar way but the positive action of forgiveness balances it out.

It seems that "forgiveness" is broken in the Trump psyche.

Dave the Gnome, seriously?

Some of the posts on this thread just seem incomprehensible to me.

Elon Musk attacks Trump legislation for massive tax cuts, calling it a 'disgusting abomination'

"In short: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has attacked US President Donald Trump in a tweet, calling his tax cuts legislation a 'disgusting abomination'.

"Mr Musk's criticism of the legislation comes just days after leaving his role as advisor to the US president.

"What's next? The legislation has passed the House of Representatives and is likely to cause a fierce debate in the Senate."

...

"Now, Mr Musk, who until recently held a cost-cutting role in the Trump administration, has intervened to place on record his opposition.

"Posting on X, he said he 'just can't stand it anymore', adding: 'This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.'"

...

"The White House said the legislation will spur robust economic growth to neutralise its potential to blow up America's already burgeoning debt pile, which has ballooned to $US36.9 trillion.

"But several independent analyses have found that — even taking growth into account — it will add between $US2.5 trillion and $US3.1 trillion to deficits over the next decade.

"The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, meanwhile, found that the combined effects of tax cuts and cost savings would result in a significant transfer of wealth from the poorest 10 per cent to the richest 10 per cent."

Dave the Gnome, maybe it would help if you explained your reasoning behind posting the link to that song in this thread. I don't see the connection to the topic.

There is no explanation as to why a song about gay cowboys is relevant to this thread.

I was thinking of the current dark days and of the hope that there will be peace in future, and this song has a very deep place in my heart. It always fills me with hope:

Whispering Hope ~ Daniel O'Donnell & Mary Duff

Earlier today I watched this video. It is a commentary and not the actual TV conversation but the words of Jasmine Crockett give me hope that people are standing up for what they believe in and I sincerely hope that people like her will achieve success.
