Subject: BS: Alaska volcano? From: keberoxu Date: 11 Apr 25 - 04:25 PM Don't we have a Mudcatter living in or near Anchorage? There is a volcano named Mount Spurr that is preparing to erupt. Sounds very serious. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Apr 25 - 05:07 PM Don't worry. Trump will sort it out. It was all Joe Biden's doing but Donny Boy knows more about volcanoes than anyone. Tariffs of 104% on volcanic ash and toxic fumes will put an end to it... |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Apr 25 - 05:32 PM A lot of the Geological and Weather information around this is going to be hamstrung by the agency cuts. Mt. Spurr may be more of a surprise than people expect because of that. (I heard a great story about that on NPR last week, where one of the crew on the broadcast was a descendent of Spurr, and told the story of how he worked surveying up in Alaska.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Beer Date: 12 Apr 25 - 07:15 PM There was someone years back from the area, but darn if I can remember the person's handle. Adrien |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: keberoxu Date: 12 Apr 25 - 07:16 PM According to MSN news, Anchorage has elevated the emergency level to Level 2. This means that the public will be informed of any developments, at least that's how the sound-bite sounded to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: robomatic Date: 13 Apr 25 - 03:28 PM I'm a local. Not that you can 'handle' a volcano, but it's being dealt with locally. We are even making sure we have N95 masks for our dogs. You know, muzzle capable! We've had three 'dustings' by volcanos since I moved here. Spurr last 'blew' in '92. The city is too far by a long ways for any similarity to Pompei or Herculaneu. These days a lot of folks may try to take their little planes up for sight seeing! Not Spurr, but one of the volcanos laid down enough ash that someone asked me to send them a sample so they could try it out in their kiln. And I had to get on my roof and get hundreds of pounds of the stuff out of my rain gutters. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Apr 25 - 07:46 PM There was some lovely glass made from the ash that Mt. St. Helens blew in 1980. I have a paperweight around here that one of my parents sent. It has an iridescent quality. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Donuel Date: 14 Apr 25 - 08:01 AM The glass made by volcanoes contains fractal patterns that can look like beautiful scenery. I have a collection of such glass from Indonesia. It requires a polishing artist to produce the most amazing results. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: JennieG Date: 14 Apr 25 - 05:50 PM Glass is amazing, and glass made from volcanic ash would be even amazing-er. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Donuel Date: 14 Apr 25 - 06:59 PM . Nature is fractal so I call them god's miniature paintings. They can depict meadows bounded by forests with blue sky and clouds above, or undersea scenes complete with fish and plants, or a glacier face marching into the sea, or mountains by a stormy sea... If you visit Etsy.com and search for landscape stones you might find the guy I use for volcanic Indonesian glass. He has many hundreds but one in a hundred are truly amazing. He is or was fairly generous with bonus volcanic glass with orders. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: keberoxu Date: 16 Apr 25 - 04:04 PM Most news sources are being calm in their reporting on Mt. Spurr. The exception is the Daily Mail in the UK, which I can't link to, but they have headlines like this one: "Terrified city goes to extreme lengths to protect itself from huge volcano ... " the huge lengths seems to refer to the masks for people and pets. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Donuel Date: 16 Apr 25 - 04:56 PM The ash was bad last time, but Mt Spurr is not a super volcano. The difference is like a meteor compared to a two-mile asteroid. It is an experiment to see how we will do without a staffed NOAA, FEMA, and US Geological Survey agencies. Ask gillymor about facing the unexpected. Its scary. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 18 Apr 25 - 06:28 AM The Daily Fail has long since been known to use incendiary headlines, keb: it's the "Look at me! Look at me!" strategy so beloved of certain politicians and other small children. Some of my more obscure sagas start with "Back when we thought that the Daily Mail was a newspaper ---" |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: keberoxu Date: 18 Apr 25 - 06:37 PM I can't link to it, but I just read from an online Anchorage newspaper. The article says that active volcanoes have activity levels that are rated by color coding. Mt. Spurr, at the moment, is rated yellow. As opposed to orange or red, which would be REALLY active. |
Subject: RE: BS: Alaska volcano? From: Donuel Date: 19 Apr 25 - 04:52 PM I invented a board game called Power and Greed. It had politicians, populists, millionaires, working folks, and the fifth column, the Daily LEAK. Like Monopoly, there was a federal prison. You could choose your power base, and the best-funded power base won depending upon outrageous chance cards. |
