I have collected a few good philosophies over recent years and will share them here.....Please add any you know of which might be encouraging or informative for others.

Recognise your limitations and draw upon your strengths, that you may live your life fully doing those things that are of greatest value.

Once you ascertain what respect tastes like, it tastes better than attention!

We may impress people with our strengths but we connect with them through our vulnerabilities.

The truth is always the truth, even if no-one believes it.

If loving people is wrong…. Who wants to be right~?

The less you respond to negativity, the more peaceful your life will become.

Remember. When we believe that things seem to be falling apart, they might be falling into place.

Nothing is permanent, so don’t stress yourself. However bad your situation, it will change.

When you talk you only repeat what you already know. When you listen, you might learn something new.

People don't measure you by your future but by the present and the past! Everything in life ends up as 'what I left behind' even after death.

Don’t simply ‘spend’ time when you can ‘invest’ it.

Good judgement comes from experience, but experience often comes from poor judgement.

A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirit; recognises your disabilities but emphasises your possibilities.

Avoiding failure is to avoid progress as failure is the condiment that gives success its’ flavour.

You don’t have to see the top of the staircase of life to take the first step.

Those who spend a lot of time revealing the faults of others , usually don’t have the time to see their own

If you’re not being the right person, how can you ever expect to find the right person for you ?

Many failures in life are by those who did not realise how close they were to success.

Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.                   (Mother Teresa)

Remember when you criticise your elders for not being up to date with mobile phones and computer handling….. they taught you how to use a spoon, a knife, a fork and many other things.

It’s OK for people to talk about us behind our backs but some should try to get their facts straight.

Many of our problems could be solved if we talked to… instead of about people.

Sowing the seeds of good knowledge, may bear fruit for many years after.

Don’t try adding years to your life! Add life to your years.

Please remember that, common sense is a flower that doesn’t grow in everyones garden.

The happiest people are those who evaluate and improve themselves. The unhappy ones are always too busy evaluating and judging others.

When you answer the phone for someone else and the caller wants to speak to that person who then tells you to say they are not in..... don't lie for them. Once someone knows you can lie for them they will never trust you, because they will think you might lie to them.

When someone wants to fight you…. first walk a mile in their shoes. That way you’ll be a mile away and they’ll have no shoes!!

If you’re looking for that one person who can change your life… try looking in the mirror.

Easy to be wise. Think of something stupid to say and don’t say it!

Anger is a way of punishing ourselves for someone elses mistake.
A fools wisdom always leads to dead ends but Gods’ wisdom opens up new horizons.

When you see something beautiful in someone… tell them!!! It may take a few seconds, but for them it might have a positive effect on their whole life.

It's nice to be Important! But it is more important to be Nice!

Those who focus on problems will have more problems. Those who focus on possibilities will have more opportunities.

Often, the most powerful thing you can say is nothing.

Having a purpose in life is more important than having property or possessions. Having more ‘stuff’ to live with is no substitute for having more to live for!

When you light the way for another you brighten your own path.

Never look down on someone unless you are lifting them up.

It’s not how much we give but how much love is in the giving.

Often, instead of listening to hear and understand, we listen to reply.

Patience is not the ability to wait but to keep a good attitude whilst waiting.

Many a rich heart lies beneath a tatty old overcoat.

Remember that an argument is about ‘who’ is right. A discussion is about ‘what’ is right.

When you truly accept someone for who they are, they blossom. They know they are accepted as a person in their own right and are empowered by the encouragement they feel. Be kind to others and watch them grow.

Being honest may not get you many friends but you will get the right ones.

Success consists of going from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. ( Winston Churchill )

When the power of love becomes greater than the love of power, the world will be a better place.

The tears you cried in the past, have watered the plant that you are today.

Whilst you are doubting yourself, someone is probably admiring your strength.

The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing, say nothing and be nothing.

It is not what we have in our life that matters but who we have in it.

Thanks Georgiansilver.

The only two which spring to my mind are:

Per ardua ad astra (through adversity or struggle to the stars)

and

Illegitimi non carborundum (made-up Latin intended as a pun, meaning don't let the bastards grind you down).

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.- from some old Greek, I think.

Knowledge speaks but wisdom listens.- attributed to Jimi Hendrix.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

I like that list, Georgiansilver.

These are Epigrams, Aphorisms, or Adages; they are short and to the point, witty at times. Truisms.

Philosophy - are you interested in logic, metaphysics, ethics, epistemology? Are you interested in rhetoric? Logical fallacies? Teleology? Those touch on philosophy. Sorry to be pedantic about it.

You're right SRS, but the word "philosophy" means loving wisdom so maybe those pithy little sayings are wise words to live by. :-)

Merriam Webster's has this as one of the definitions of philosophy:

the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.

And they list credo as a synonym.

To borrow the Mahler quote from BobL's excellent list- Tradition is tending the flame, not worshipping the ashes.

As an English grad student I always found it helpful to land on the name of a paper before I actually wrote it, and would mull on the subject matter to find it. Clever, yet identifying the subject clearly. Epigrams can do double work, as part or all of a title, or as a thought-provoking statement introducing the essay. (Scientists miss so much by not having much liberty to play with words in their journal articles.)

As an undergraduate I had a whole quarter to consider what my philosophy was of the field I was studying at the time, and wrote a 15-page paper on the subject. I still have a copy of that around here somewhere.

I think Donuel best identified that kind of statement, as credos or simple guiding principles, some almost tautological in nature. More than once in my life I have been accused of overthinking things. :)

To borrow one of Gargoyle's favorite rhetorical techniques, I'll note in tiny green print that the diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood is an eye-opener to a reason for the tendency to hyperfocus on subjects.

Words change over time, they gain meanings and lose meanings. I'll stick with Merriam Webster and accept credo as a synonym of philosophy.

More wise words, ones I *actually* tend to live by:

After the second coffee of the day, I am ready to face the world. The Flesh and the Devil can wait until the pubs open.
Youth and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
