Subject: Lyr Add: THE MARXIAN CALL (Harvey P. Moyer)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 May 25 - 05:02 PM

From Songs of Socialism, edited by Harvey P. Moyer (Chicago: The Brotherhood Publishing Co., Ltd., 1907), page 4:

THE MARXIAN CALL.
Words and music by Harvey P. Moyer, ©1905.

1. Why sleepest thou? bright dawns the glorious morning!
The battling hosts long wait thee on the field:
Awake! the world of labor's joining;
Naught can withstand, the foe must yield;
Awake! the world of labor's joining,
A world we'll gain, full justice wield.

CHORUS: O, lab'rers 'wake! and break your chains!
You've naught to lose, you've all the world to gain;
Your children's cries, your brothers' woes
To duty call; O, haste the glorious Socialist reign!

2. Must children's tears, for food and rest appealing,
Must suff'ring wives and brothers plead in vain?
Shall wrong prevail, its blight revealing
Hearts chilled and dulled thro' selfish gain!
Shall wrong prevail, its blight revealing
The strong asleep! the conscience slain!

3. How canst thou sleep, when 'round the world are falling
Thy comrades true thro' tyrants' greedy sway?
Thy brothers' blood is loudly calling,
The pow'r is thine, the call obey;
Thy brothers' blood is loudly calling,
Awake! and act, be men, to-day!

4. Awake, awake! and break thy chains, my brother!
Let all that's dear and holy speed thee on:
We'll save ourselves and save each other,
Earth's paradise shall soon be won;
We'll save ourselves and save each other,
Love's kingdom come, Love's will be done!

Little red songbook PDF

There was also, fwiw, a Big Red Songbook from the 1970s, which is acrually a little book but it has more "folkie' songs in it, Pluto press.There is an isbn but my eyes are not quite up to that I am afraid. Cost £1 at the time.

The Little Red Songbook was scanned when the staples were removed & the double pages were not separated (it would have been a huge job separating & re-organising them) so the spiral bound booklet resulting is in a very interesting order! The friend who printed it up does a lot of archival scanning and produces lots of spiral bound booklets, especially those for our musicians & singers, & might one day when his voluntary workload shrinks, sort it out.

We can read the songs, that's all that matters
