Subject: Lyr Req: Fast song about a gansey (guernsey)
From: GUEST
Date: 25 May 25 - 12:31 PM

I was at a pub sing last and someone sang a fast chantey-style song about a gansey (guernsey) sweater. Some lyric snippets that I caught:
In my 13th year I first set sail...
didn't catch a cod nor a fish nor a whale but was warm in the [something] guernsey
..towin' the line
...made by my mother who knit herself blind

I've searched high and low and can't locate anything related to any of these lyrics. Would love some help!

Wouldn't that come from 'Geansaí' rather than 'Guernsey'?

The Irish for a jumper is geansaí, which is a loanword from English Guernsey, an island in the English channel. Guernsey jumpers were brought over to the Aran islands in the 1890s, and were adapted by the local women since to use local, thicker wool and their own variations. The Norwegian genser and Scottish Gaelic geansaidh is also borrowed from Guernsey.

Note: ‘Jersey’ is named after Jersey, which is neighbour to the island of Guernsey.

"a pub sing last and someone sang,,,"

If you could tell us a bit about the pub and when it was we might be able to track down the singer and ask them.
