Subject: Obit: Monologue John Bartley 27 May 2025
From: Joe Offer
Date: 30 May 25 - 09:18 PM

Oh, this is a hard one. Monologue John Bartley was with us at the Mudcat Singaround on Monday, 26 May. He was with us almost every Monday for five years. Rick Pollay tells me John was found dead at home by his caregiver on Tuesday morning.
John was born December 2, 1944, so he was 80 years old.
I liked him so much. May he rest in peace.

In my mind's ear I am hearing now that rich beautiful voice reciting a piece, that sly smile at the punchline. What a gift he was.

One of the most regular of the regulars at the singaround. Very sad.

When I heard John recite a monologue, I knew I was hearing the real thing.

John was a character is an understatement ~ I knew him from the 1970s as Sheffielder who had frequented the many smoky folk clubs in the City ~ his father was Dean of Sheffield University and his mother an Austrian lady I believe

His life was colourful ~ he was a big lad ~ his memory was retentive and repertoire ever expanding

Condolences to his friends far and wide and his relatives RIP owd lad

Ray

Yes indeed, a stalwart of the Mudcat sing-arounds and more through which I came to know him. What an extensive repertoire of monologues. RIP John.

Very sad indeed. John was a true character, a fine (and erudite) monologuist.. And he was on such good form at last Monday's Mudcat Singaround, it's hard to believe he's no longer with us. We will miss him, that's for sure. RIP John, old friend.

He is a sad loss to the folk community. Thankfully, he recorded video of many of his poems and monologues and put them out on youtube for everyone to access. RIP John.

He was at the Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Folk Festival online chantey sings for most of the last several months. This is very sad news; he was a great addition to our events.

Met him many times on Zoom sessions and he remained in top form right up until the end.

A great performer of monologues and poetry.

RIP John

John was a hugely talented man who gave his all to every performance.
Unique is a word whch is often bandied about, wrongly, but it truly belongs to Monologue John.
He will be sorely missed by all the Mudcat Community.

Rest Easy.

John was a lovely man who contributed to many zoom sessions over the years. I met up with him in some unexpected places. He and I shared many a conversation about genealogy and he was always happy to share his knowledge. John had collected many different monologues, verses and poetry, some well known, some not so well known which soon became favourites. He did a great service in bringing these to a wider audience. Oh John, I shall miss you. Rest in peace after a life well lived.

Pete

Please don’t have any more, Mrs Moore.

John’s delivery was always engaging, and lives on in my head, sadly missed.

It was good to hear him in some of our recent filk (not folk) Zoom circles.

It was so devastating to find out from my friends at Cowboy's Bunkhouse that he is no longer with us. Despite our 66 year age gap, we were good friends for good 4 years... i just found out about his passing!

God rest your soul John.
