Can anyone recommend festivals in the UK for people wanting to sing and play contemporary folk. I.e.singarounds and open mics.

This question was asked not too long ago. I guess it depends to some extent on distance to travel but Sidmouth, Moira (Leicestershire) and Whitby are all good for singarounds.

Moira Furnace Folk Festival has a good programme for singarounds both on site and at the two village pubs, The Railway Inn and The Rawdon Arms.

I've never noticed a "contemporary folk" singaround at Whitby and didn't miss it. I can't see how it would fit or where you'd do it.

Contemporary folk sessions are more common in Scottish festivals like Moniave, Innerleithen, Stonehaven, Moffat etc.

One (now defunct) festival near me in Southern Scotland used to be like that - a friend described it as "like being locked for the weekend in a teenager's bedroom".

The White Horse Folk Festival near Wantage, Oxfordshire has both singarounds and music sessions, and is a jolly nice festival to visit - no trade markets, no overpriced food stalls (the rugby club food is excellent, the loos are superb, with well-priced beer and plenty of it; and the kebab van stops nearby on Friday night) so it's just music and singing, intimate concerts, workshops and wonderful people.

It's the second weekend in August.
