So sorry to hear of the death of Derek Gifford, a great singer, songwriter and all round entertainer.
I’ll be singing When all Men Sing tonight at The Blue Anchor session in Helston in his honour.

So sorry to hear this. I knew he had not been well but he always seemed cheerful in his sardonic way. A great singer. I will miss his voice and friendship.

I was sorry to hear that Derek had died. He made a good contribution to the folk scene and will be sorely missed for his singing and his wide knowledge of songs of the sea and of environmental issues, especially with regard to birds. My condolences go to his friends and family and all those who know and love him. He has earned his place in the "In Memoriam" thread! RIP Derek

My lovely husband, Derek Gifford, died peacefully and pain free on 28/8. He will live on in song, via CDs and YouTube. There will be a celebration of his life on 29/9. If anyone who knew him would like to attend, please contact me for full details.

Derek was also a keen bird watcher, and I think was comprising a book of songs that were either about Birds, or mentioned them. I had known him many years apart from being a good singer and musician he was good company.
He also ran folk clubs in the lancashire area, he was originally from the Midlands, and had been involved in teaching, He also did a great job setting Scowies poems to music. I will miss him

He produced a CD of songs about or mentioning birds some years ago, "Birds in folk song" with 20 tracks on.
I thought of him again this morning when a skein of pink-footed geese flew over our house.
He used to tell the tale of being out with a bunch of lads, hearing the geese going overhead and telling them that the geese flying over were pink-footed geese. "Blimey, you've got good eyesight!".

He spent an evening at the ‘Eel’s Foot’ session once, and borrowed my guitar. That was a great evening.

So sorry to hear of Deks passing. He was a wonderful man with many talents. Thinking of all his family at this sad time. I'm still birding, eating curries enjoying wild life in Aotearoa.
