The mouse spoken of above has a cousin who lives in a tavern. Some unknown wrote this about him:

Some Guiness was spilt on the barroom floor
when the pub was shut for the night.
When out of his hole crept a wee brown mouse
and stood in the pale moonlight.

He lapped up the frothy brew from the floor,
Then back on his haunches he sat.
And all night long you could hear him roar,
"Bring on the God Damn Cat."

How did you find the lyrics, Joe? I spent hours trying to track them down years ago. You are the man.

The Freddy and the Dreamers version was the one I remembered. But who was Ronnie Hilton? (Sorry, across the pond and all that).

Ronnie Hilton got to No 23 with this in the UK charts, in February 1965. I'll get my anorak...........

AMG - All Music Guide lists 3 recordings of "A Windmill in Old Amsterdam":

Jessi Colter, "Jessi Colter Sings Just for Kids: Songs from Around the World", 1996.
Jessi Colter, "Around the World", 2000.
Ronnie Hilton, "Best Kid's Party in the World... Ever!", 1999.

This page has two obituaries for Ronnie Hilton, one from The Guardian and one The Telegraph. They say Hilton recorded it around 1967 and it sold a million copies (in Britain).

I've got a version (mentioned in the original thread) by Freddy and the Dreamers on an old Mercury LP. I'm fairly sure no-one's seen fit to reissue it, but I'd be happy to put it on tape for you if you can't find it anywhere else. Anyway, keep it in mind under "Last Resort" or something and good luck in your search.

There was a thread a distant moon ago here (spot that tune) about the kids song "A Mouse Lived in a Windmill" (In Old Amsterdam). We found most of the lyrics, but I wanted to find either the chords or some recorded version. Does anyone know of an available recording? I have tried Raffi, Sharon, Lois and Bram, Shari Lewis, and various other scary kids singers, and racks of children's songbooks. No luck. Anyone have any clues?

There is at least one other verse but I can't remember it, but it had lyrics along the lines of....

living in a windmill in Amsterdam, ja.

...how lucky we am, living in a windmill in old Amsterdam.

I think the mouse went on to have a family, that's how we ended up with a line with "we am" in it.

Hope this helps jog someone else's memory.
