Geoff Muldaur also recorded a fine version of this on his album Livin' in the Sunlight.

A great tune, indeed. I think I was introduced to this tune on Jim Kweskin's Garden of Joy album ca. 1967 and I love their version (the band included both of the Muldaurs). But I've always liked Don Redman's version too.

I play this in the key of C with my partner/SO Joy Ward on fiddle. The chords I play are:

[575655]Love makes me [5x3543]treat you the [4x2432]way that I [5x555x]do,
[5x455x]Gee baby [353433]ain't I good to [3x2210]you, ___ [4x343x] [5x454x]
[575655]Nothin's too [5x3543]good for a [4x2432]girl that's [5x555x]true,
[5x455x]Gee baby [353433]ain't I good to [3x2210]you,
[5x353x]I got you a fir coat for [6x565x]Christmas, [3x333x]a dia- [xx3335]mond [3x233x]ring,
[xx3555]A Cadillac [575655]car [5x3543]and every- [4x2432]thing,
It's [575655]Love makes me [5x3543]treat you the [4x2432]way that I [5x555x]do,
[5x455x]Gee baby [353433]ain't I good to [3x2210]you.

In the original recording and again in Kweskin's the verse is done one time as a recitation and is sung once.

The quintessential recording (for me) was made by Nat King Cole. He was perhaps the most instrumental in popularizing the song. I was impressed that the piano sheet music arrangement from back in the day wasn't one of those simplified-to-absurdity versions.

Diana Krall & Maria Muldaur have both recorded it and the Guitar Guy's got some chords for it.

Jimmy Rushing sings "Cadillac car" for "big patented coupe". I sing that and then explain most men fall short of this ideal and go:

"Nylon fur coat for Christmas and a Ratner's* ring
Lada** car and everything..."

* A chain of cheap jewelry shops in the UK that went bust after the owner described their products as "crap" on national tv
**Under Eastern European Communism the people's car, cheap and not very cheerful

Ah, love makes me treat you the way I do.
Say, ain't I good to you?
You know there's nothin' too good for a girl that's true.
Ah, baby, you know I'm good to you.
Fur coat for Christmas, and a diamond ring
Big patented coupe(?), 'most ev'rything.
And it's love makes me treat you the way I do.
Ah, baby, ain't I good to you?

Aaaargh!!! I must be thinking of something else. Please disregard the above. I had a brain fart. I had it confused with "Why Don't You Do Right?" which sounds similar.

"Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You" was written by Andy Razaff ( Fats Waller's songwriting partner), and could probably be found on a good Fats Waller anthology.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the previous erroneous post.

Razaff is the author, and Waller the songs first performer.

The biggest hit was Peggy Lee's in 1941, but the best version in my opinion, was the original recorded by Lil Green in '40 with a killer back up trio of Big Bill Broonzy on guitar, Raansom Knowling on Bass, and Henry Simenon on Piano.

I have sometimes heard of songwriting credits given to Kansas Joe McCoy (Memphis Minnnie's husband).

Look for the Lil Green version, but the Peggy Lee will probably be easier to find

Good hunting.

I hope this qualifies as blues enough to be appropriate here. If anyone has the lyrics, and hopefully the chords, to this song I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks, Chet
