Dick & Carol Holdstock wrote:

This morning we learned from his son, Duncan, that Allan Macleod passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. Allan had suffered from dementia for over ten years and has lived in a care home in Los Angeles.

A native of Scotland, Allan was a professional electrical engineer who became well known in the British folk music scene. During the 1960s, he became a part of the Ewan MacColl song group in London. He emigrated with his American wife and his son to Northern California and became well known as a singer of traditional Scottish folk music. For 30 years, Allan and I performed as Holdstock and Macleod, and we produced 5 CDs.

Alan was a beloved performer and a dear friend who will be greatly missed.

From Joe Offer: I sang at Dick Holdstock's house on Friday, and we reminisced a lot about Allan. We haven't seen Allan for almost ten years. Even ten years ago, Allan's dementia was pretty severe. Last time I saw him, he sang the same song twice in one singaround. He was such a magnificent man. He had one of the most beautiful male voices I have heard.

Sad news, I shared a flat with Allan in London in the mid 1960s, a gentleman. Condolences to his friends and family.

I was so sorry to hear this news. Dementia is a terrible thing. Among other accomplishments Allan founded the popular Singers’ Circle in Berkeley and performed solo and with Dick Holdstock. At the time they were known as maritime festival favourites. I send my condolences to all those who know and love him and have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP Allan
