Subject: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: Mr Red Date: 24 Sep 26 - 05:20 AM Has anyone had problems with hosted websites? I wonder if other places had problems - Fakebook has been acting stranger than usual. I did suspect they were hacked, given the time it is taking to resolve. Not heard rumours though. IONOS took over from 1&1 which may have left huge legacy traps for such a big update. |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: Mr Red Date: 24 Sep 26 - 05:21 AM IONOS took 3 days to update and in the end messed up the DNS of a load of my subdomains. after more than 3 weeks the corrected (just one) subdomain and the domain itself as well points to the same place! Settings I can control seem kosher. Luckily I have other domains and fudged one in JavaScript to act instead but there are caveats like https not being available etc etc. the fudge: https://mister.red goes to http://stroudfm.co.uk with all sorts of diminished performance. And appearance! |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: Mr Red Date: 27 Sep 26 - 06:25 PM most of the 20 subdomains have finally been fixed. But I think they are going round all the other customers and fixing a bit here and a bit there to keep the customers "in hope", rather than losing them altogether. As above I have had to fudge and re-fudge a few times. It has not been without fixing one problem and leaving a new one in its place. I can just imagine customers who sell via their website jumping up and down, and generally screaming, and not being as patient as I have been. |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Sep 26 - 12:32 PM That little web page is doing a lot of work, but what is the software running it? At the bottom it suggests a browser involved is Netscape - a company that vanished in 2008. |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: DaveRo Date: 29 Sep 26 - 10:45 AM That line containing 'Netscape' is the website's attempt to determine what browser you are using so that if you contact the Mr Red with a problem you can tell him. But the website code is out of date. The 'Navigator.appName' property is no longer used and whatever your browser it will report 'Netscape' for compatibility - i.e. sites still using it won't fail. |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Sep 26 - 11:25 AM Ok - since I'm using Mozilla's FireFox that's as close as it can get, I guess. Netscape became Mozilla, or at least part of it did. But apparently even in that observation I'm giving that line too much credit for understanding the history of the product. ;-) I did visit a few other links - interesting pages, with modestly designed forms. |

Subject: RE: Tech: failed LINUX update on webspace? From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 02 Oct 26 - 09:03 AM Once Upon A Time, during the era of browser-specific site construction, I threatened to produce a site with three clickables on the home page "to optimise your browsing experience", as was the then-current fashion: * Lynx (a text-based browser), for the semantic content alone; * Netscape, for the semantic content plus pretty pictures; * Internet Explorer. The last would, of course, be a link to Netscape's download page. |
