Oh and Sorcha, I haven't got an accent - it's the rest of you that speak funny ;-) Seriosly nobody has a clue what mine is (not even me) it is a sort of confused mixture of Shropshire, North Wales and Kent. I am often accused of having a West Country accent but I have never lived in that part of the UK. Both Shropshire and parts of Kent do have "country" accents.

Hi Sorcha, I think kat has explained most of it but I'll make a couple of comments:

Normal ICQ is really geared for more one to one type conversation and at the Radio time, we experieced a lot of problems. There was often confusion over whose room we were using, there was a need for somebody to invite others into the room and a lot of the time we had a situation where half the room could not see the other half and people kept on having to leave, and get reinvited in the hope that they could see more people next time. There was also a problem with people getting booted for no apparant reason.

The active list is very much in its infancy and we had problems with it (caused by my computer crashing - I think) last week but in theory, it provides a common room that people can let themselves into and we have not experienced an individual getting booted (last week, every body goot kicked at the same time becase of my problems but I think (and hope!) I have that situation under control now).

I did raise the question of using one of the Hearme rooms instead in another thread but have had no feedback. My biggest worry on using hearme is there are some doubts about its compatability with Real Audio and until that situation is known, it can not be used. There are other issues that would need considering too.

Sorcha:

ICQ stands for I Seek You. It is a program that is on all of the time you are logged on, if you want it to be. You can have your own list of people whom you want to be able to contact via it and have a text chat with and vice versa. Say I am on your list. When you log on to the Internet, your little ICQ icon would light up, you could click on it and see that I had just come on. Then, you could send me an instant message or hail me for a real time TEXT chat. It is very easy to use. That is the program everyone uses to chat during the Mudcat radio show. They are not actually on the show live, except through Max and Bert reading what someone has typed in the chat. Jon has set up a special *room* with the active list to make the program work better with the many of us who want to use it all together at once during the shows.

HearMe is a totally separate pregram, which we use for the Sing Arounds like you were in last Sunday. It has a text chat function, too, which you used, but it also allows those who have a microphone, to hold down their F9 key and speak to the rest of us, or sing and pick, as you heard with the use of a prgram Jon wrote so that they don't have to hold the F9 down while playing.

Also, as Jon has pointed out, any of us can go in there at anytime and chat, sing, or what have you with one another, except at those times when there is a planned activity.

So, ICQ is great for anyone who has access to the Internet, whom you would like to have a written *chat* with when you are both on or whom you would like to send a message to, even if they are offline, as long as you have them on your contact list. No one can put you on their list without getting your permission first and vice versa. There is much more available through ICQ, but those are the basics. It also allows you to be logged on and *invisible*, so that if you do not want to be disturbed, you will not show up on anyone's contact list.

HearMe, literally means just that, darlin'. Now...have I helped or just muddied the waters some more?**BG** Remember, we were all Net Newbies at one time.

YES! Thank you Jon (with the wonderful accent) for providing this for us.! BUT, I am still confused. if I sign up for ICQ can I participate in Radio Mudcat Live? What exactly does joining the Active list do for me? If my mike works, I can participate in Hearme,eh? I did change my name from Guest XXXX to Sorcha, that is a one time deal, Eh? I suppose most of my confusion is due to being a "Net Newbiie" and I will figure it out eventually. I have most stuff.

Sorcha (and anyone else who is wondering), ICQ is something different. It works like the text chat part of hearme(that you were using the other day)only on a bigger scale.

you need to download it (very easy just follow the instructions.... takes about 15 minutes), register (choose a nickname, don't give too many details about yourself)... and off you go... once you do that you can look for other mudcatters and we'll help you from there.

My ICQ number is 16719177..... once you are on drop me or one of the others a line and we'll show you what to do from there.

Kat, I think half the fun of it is trying to follow all the different conversations and the interesting tangents they go off on... how else would we have endied up bidding for a date with Max??*grin*

Jon, you are to be commended for al of the work you do to ensure we can use ICQ for chat and HearMe for the sing arounds.

I've told Jon and a couple of others, but just so the rest of you know, I am not being a brat for not joining in when the radio is on. I just don't do well in a crowded *room* with many conversations going on at once, plus I seem to have less net congestion if I just let the show play and do nothing else on the computer at that time.

Thanks, Jon.

No Sorcha, they are 2 different things ICQ detials can be found at http://www.icq.com. The 2 things are currently in use and the ICQ one seems more suitabe for Radio times. If you do decide to join this one, you also need to join the Active List in question which is 62415725 and needs to be added as an Active List rather than as a user. I appologise for the need for bith services but currently it seems to provide the most workable solution for our needs

Man, phar out, I don't understand any of this. I did not have any problems downloading or listening on 2/23/00. Is Hearme ICQ? Is ICQ Hearme? Just because I downloaded Jon's program, am I now registered with ICQ? Don't worry about answering this, because I probably would not understand, and I have not had problems with Jon's room yet, and right now this is all I want. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I am sorry to refresh this thread again but I have recieved a couple of emails that IMO, make this neccessary.

I agree that the ICQ is not the ideal solution but feel it I the best we have for now. The messages have revolved around people not being authorized to join (normally caused by trying to connect while invisible) and people finding themselves suddenly removed from the list.

I will stand by my commets regarding my feelings towards the stability of the room itself but these other problem are beyond my control. I have never kicked anybody from FolkChat and althogh I reserve the rights to, in reality, it is something that is unlikely to occur with anybody here.

In some cases, people may need to rejoin or may need to close ICQ and start it again. I am just trying to make the best of things for a of us until Mudcat starts with a room and want to make it clear that these problems are nothing personal towards any other member.

Praise.... if you want to try ICQ you need to download it....... we use it to chat when mudcat radio is on.... (if you register let us know your number or contact one of us (there are many mudcatters on ICQ... my number is 16719177)

hearme works from a URL you don't actually have to download anything

This sounds like great fun, and well-organized, only this Newbie is still perplexed over ICQ and Hearme.

I have just had a system crash (not caused by ICQ - I think) that has resulted in 10 names (one of which was my own) getting deleted from this list. If any of those want to continue to use it for the Mudcat Radio or whatever, they will have to rejoin.

Sorry about this but it was Bill Gates fault.. hope his ears are burning. It was a crash and I have nt deleted any names since I started it.

Hope these instructions help for getting you in to the chat that Jon has so nicely set up.

Click on SERVICES near the bottom of your ICQ box.
Choose (AL) "ICQ Active list".
Go to "Find/Add an Active ICQ list".
The ICQ ActiveList Search Wizard box pops up (hopefully)
In the "Search by List ID" cut and paste (control-c for cut; control-v for paste) the number of the Folkchat list (62415725).
Click "next"
It should show the Folkchat title in the box
Click on "Add List" and FolkChat should appear on your list.
Clicking on FolkChat in your list should give you an option to "Join Chat Room" - go there.

See you in the chat!!!

OK. Can someone tell me why, tho I have downloaded ICQ 99b, the program crashes every time I try to chat?? (message: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down") I can send messages, and it's almost like chatting but can only work with one person at a time. I'd really like to join the chats!

Bill D, You need to join the list as a member as well as adding the list to ICQ (I can't see you yet).

To answer Alison, it is online now.

My situation is that I have free calls to my ISP between 6pm and 8am and all weekend but have to pay for them at other times. I will try to keep it open as much as possible within those hours but it will be subject to the 3 hour cut off. I can reset if I am in but somtimes I may be out when I get disconnected although it is likely to start up on its own after a while. I have to disconnect when I go to bed during the week otherwise it might still be running outside my free internet time and I can not afford that.

well, I have added it..didn't even know that option was hiding in the menu!..It pays to look thru your menus and see whats available!.....

BTW..do any of you have mICQ?..lets you have more than one ICQ# running simultaneously..(yes, that DOES imply multiple identies...not for me, as I can barely cope with the one I have, but..I CAN se why some would want it,,,*grin*)

also, some folks are getting HearMe for ICQ, which adds a HearMe box to 'your' ICQ page and allows live voice as you chat. You get a little yellow house beside your name and anyone can call you...works quite well, though it seems NOT to have the privacy features of ICQ ..meaning that anyone who clicks pops into your conversation, (Am I right about that?)

well... we have only just started to investigate this... but it looks VERY promising.....

once you are accepted as a member (automatic) it brings you into the room.... it brings everyone straight in.. ... thereby stopping one person from spending their entire time chasing around people and inviting them in... and no confusion over who "owns" the room

there are a few more whistles and bells with this version of ICQ.... pretty smiley faces too!!!

can I recommend that those of you who have got this version of ICQ join up to the active list number Jon gave in his first message here.... and those of you who, like me, had an earlier version.... please download the latest version....

we can only use this when Jon is online at the moment... so that'll be later today...... he'll probably drop you a line to let you know....

hopefully we can get a few more people into it over the weekend... and really give it a good testing....

we need a few people to see if the old "invisibility" is still a problem..... and to see if people get kicked out as often......

this looks like it would be a perfect solution for during the mudcat radio program

please help us with this "valuable research".... hahaha

One point that Alison had noticed, not only do you need the 99b version (later ones when they come out wil be OK) but you need to add as an Active List. Attempting to add the number I gave as a user will not work.

looks like you need to be running ICQ 99b version to be able to do this... I couldn't (didn't have the right button)... just downloading the later version to see what happens... hopefully it'll get rid of the increasing number of glitches I've been having over the last few days.

any of you newer ICQ-ers who have been kicked out of rooms recently.. can you check to see what version you have.... In your ICQ box (where it shows who is online) bottom corner click on "ICQ", then "help" then "about"... it'll tell you the version.....

Subject: New ICQ Active List
From: Jon Freeman
Date: 28 Jan 00 - 12:46 AM

A few of us were sent E-ICQ messages from Max last night. I am not sure why they were sent but I have decided to have a play with the Active List idea.

I have created an new Active list that is currently called "FolkChat" and have tried to send out invitations to the Mudcatters on my ICQ list.

The active list is like the normal ICQ chat but it has a few advantages e.g it provides a common chat room that could be used during the Mudcat Radio with none of the confusion about where people are gathering, and is accessible regardless of whether and one person is involved in the chat... all it needis is the server to be running on the "Owner's" (currently me) machine. It allows administration options that are not possible with normal ICQ chat and also provides a fairly basic discussio forum.

This is just an experiment at the moment but if anybody is interested, the Active List number is 62415725. You need to become a member to have a look and I have set it to auto accept new members. I do not have the resources to keep this open all the time (but if it works can transfer ownership as well as rename) and my ISP dissconnects me after 3 hours connection (have to log back in) but for the next few days (at least), I will try to keep it available from aroud 6pm to whenever I go to bed - likely around 6am GMT. (That is 1pm to 1am EST or Mudcat time).
