In the mid 70's there was an active band called the Dooley Brothers in Chicago, with a wild and wide repertoire of all things folk. Just for fun they would do what I recall as an a capella version of that must have been a 20's or 30's or 40's tune called Tubas in the Moonlight-- or maybe a spoof of the style they came up with. Complete with mouth tuba effect. I wish I could sing it now. Anyone know it, or where the Dooley Brothers are today?

Hi Susan!

The Bonzo Dog Band's 1969 album "Tadpoles" (Liberty LBS 83257 in UK) features Tubas in the Moonlight. (BTW when did they drop the Doo-Dah from their title?)

The label credits the song as (Spear) Bron Music, while the sleeve says Spear/Bron. Roger Ruskin-Spear was a member of the Bonzos, but I can't remember if Gerry Bron was. Anyway, he gets producer credits on some of their other albums.

TUBAS IN THE MOONLIGHT

(Slow, semi-spoken)
Through the twilight I can hear the humming of a melancholy coon,
For the memories that still linger, I thank you Mr Moon.
And although I never smile, Winter, summer, autumn too.
Now here's one tune to remind me why I feel so blue.

Tubas in the moonlight
Playing for me all night,
Tell me what I want to hear.
Am I only dreaming?
Am I only scheming?
Stars above me, shining brightly
Why can't she be standing here beside me?
Tubas in the moonlight
Will bring my loved one home.

Sorry I can't help with the Dooley Bros - never heard of them this side of the pond!
Wassail!

Snuffy

Thanks, Snuffy! I think I have that album and perhaps another by the Bonzo Dog Band, but I'd almost forgotten them. Sort of a folk-rock Monty Python. (And what do you think of shirts?) I'm still looking for a turntable so I can listen to all this great music I collected in the pre-CD age.

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks for the link, AndyG. I remember one night at London's 100 club in the middle of an Acker Bilk set when two men with a sack came on stage and joined in with various instruments out of the sack. Acker, unfazed, just said "My God it's the Alberts" and let them carry on until they finished the number packed away their instruments and left!
I also saw the Temperance Seven there in various incarnations in the '70s, including Will Hastie playing two tunes simultaneously on two penny whistles!

I cannot believe my first request produced such a hilarious and productive result!!! I issued it before joining up but am now hooked.

Now if I can find the recording I can remember the melody. Thanks all!!!

Bill, I've been exploring the Neil Innes site. What a motherload of chords, lyrics, bonzo and ruttles stuff! It will take me days.

Great!

Thanks from me too Bill. I was playing Tadpoles to the kids (aged 8 & 10) the other day and they loved every song!
