Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: MMario Date: 17 Aug 01 - 04:19 PM it's been fun watching you guys scamper around - and really interesting to see what you've come up with. |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 17 Aug 01 - 04:11 PM P.S. – Besides, Áine has told us, again and again, that past Challenge!s are NEVER "closed", and that we're free to submit songs to any of them at any time. I didn't mean to bring a deluge of catcher-uppers upon her by embarking on my own personal quest to write a song for each, but she never said one word to discourage me from questing. I kinda had the impression that she LIKED reading this stuff... it's just that, right now, there's more of it than usual. I think that this, too, shall pass... ...and come again, in waves, no doubt. |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 17 Aug 01 - 03:58 PM I dunno.... I still like having her reviews of what we've done (it's nice to have her feedback!). And all those songs should go SOMEWHERE on the Song Challenge! pages eventually; it seems unfair to the newer writers not to have their work up there with everyone else's. In the final analysis, Áine's the one who'll decide what, when and whether to award. But if she decides to sit back and enjoy reading our past-Challenge! entries at her leisure, I don't mind waiting (anymore!) for the Chips to fall as they may. |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: MMario Date: 17 Aug 01 - 03:50 PM Don't worry - iffen it's a real "goodie" there are plenty of people around to point them out to her! 'Course I'm not too sure we really want anyone else to start tossing cow chips around - it could get out of hand... |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Trapper Date: 17 Aug 01 - 03:47 PM Good point. I've decided (for me) that Aine's kudos for going back to PAST challenges is totally optional - not essential. I'd rather have her spend her time tending to current and future challenges than to have her burn out patting us on the back for "closed" challenges. How about it the rest of you "Catch-uppers" - shall we agree to cut Aine some slack? - Al |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 17 Aug 01 - 03:19 PM Okey-doke. I can only imagine how burned-out Áine must feel... |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Trapper Date: 17 Aug 01 - 02:56 PM Sharon - Thanks! I will undoubtedly take a stab at #9 eventually, but I'm a little burnt out from the volume of "catch up" challenges this week. Maybe next week.... - Al |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 17 Aug 01 - 02:35 PM I was wnodering that myself... Trapper, that was magnificent. Additional kudos for spotlighting Lou and Peter Berryman (yah hey!), in case there's any poor soul out there who hasn't yet heard them or heard of them. I'd like to see your parody of "When Did We Have Sauerkraut?" for SONG CHALLENGE! - part 9; 'ya up for it? |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Trapper Date: 17 Aug 01 - 12:22 PM The original song for this is a teriffic performance piece by Lou, who has somehow mastered the AMAZINGLY complex rhythm for this song. I hope I haven't butchered it too badly with my ode to Catrin's cookies and the Mudcat cafe! BTW - I like MY cookies with a tad extra Kahlua! I imagined Catrin trying to type this recipe for Aine while she was multi-tasking with TOO many open chat lines on her computer... - Al
CATRIN'S COOKIES

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 17 Aug 01 - 11:25 AM Ew! Jack, that was really... um... gutsy. ;^) Here's a song based on the entire "Caitrin's Cookie Recipe" thread, complete with Sorcha's variation on the recipe and Liz the Squeak's Easter-biscuit-like cakes... HAVE SOME KAHLUA (mmm), DO! (Tune: "Have Some Madeira, M'Dear") Caitrin's sung, to be sure, to the 'Catters advice: "Oh, beware of the sweet treats you've seen That are sold: so beguiling, arranged very nice- -ly, but tastelessly bad they have been." Then she shyly unveiled her own cookies. They'd chat; They knew this convection's advanced And she said as they hastened to eat, "These are fat, They're fine; by the bar they're enhanced. "Have some Kahlua (mmm), do! You'll really have something to chew. I'm just trying to tempt you; it wouldn't be right To leave out the spirits from each fudgy bite! Have some Kahlua (mmm), do! It's nicer to eat than to brew. I don't care if ev'ryone grows a bit stout, For portly's just fine when your pants are let out Some, simply because of the cookies I tout So have some Kahlua (mmm), do!" Unaware all the while of the cake-with-such-class And the great cookie rave, Sorcha copes. She lowers decanter and bottle and glass Of liquor in batter, and mopes. She baked it, it stank; down the drain it was slid. She promptly prepared it again, Trying Bailey's. She poured it in just one more batch.... It was buttery gold and weight gain! "Have some with Bailey's, y'whale! I bought a big bottle on sale And once it's been added, although it ain't cheap, It polishes up the mix; go bake a heap! Have some with Bailey's, y'whale! You'll feel that from Ireland you hail. Now if you don't grin with a song in your breast, I'll heave all these cookies and make a new test Batch with the whole bottle's worth – they'll be the best! So have some with Bailey's, y'whale!" Then there flashed through their minds what the Squeak had once said With a biscuit of olde on her breath: "Oh my, you all should cook with a wine that's not red To prepare for your plate ere your death With nutmeg and raisin and cinnamon nigh, Splashed, sprinkled, until it doth pour In the batter that heavenly liquor so high On MY list... and a dash or two more: "Have some Madeira (mmm), dear, and out from the oven there's cheer With a tre-mendous cake that you'd find at a Faire As knights fight and fake death while the fool sings an air. Have some Madeira (mmm), dear! For Easter, this treat has no peer! Until your next baking with that rich brown-red Kahlua and choc'late chips, may you be fed The lovely confection of which I have said, 'Have some Madeira (mmm), dear!' " |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: SharonA Date: 16 Aug 01 - 09:54 AM Excellent!!! Hmmm... I haven't figured out a song for THIS one yet... but I DO have some others waiting in the wings that I should post. Poor Áine's got her work cut out for her! |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Aidan Crossey Date: 16 Aug 01 - 09:24 AM To the tune of "The Rocky Road to Dublin". NB for those living outside of Ireland and the UK, "cookies" are known in these quarters as biscuits (bikkies). Cigarettes are referred to as fags. Camp is a weird coffee/chicory syrup which can be used to make beverages which taste something like coffee.

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Amos Date: 30 Jan 00 - 02:55 PM Caitrin, , if Dave starts calling on ye, I would suggest you ask Mbo along to accompany, in the interests of...propriety? Mind how she goes, don't let her point too far up! :>)) No question you can handle yourself, but a sailor's blarney is a famous thing. 'Nuff said!

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 2 From: Mbo Date: 29 Jan 00 - 10:34 PM Now Caitrin is a lively lass And at cooking she is great In fact, her food's so fine and grand It's the wonder of the State! She's known for cakes and goodies And other tasty treats She'll even cook some Slovak food And make sure everyone eats! But Caitrin's got these cookies-- Oh, how should I begin? The taste it is so gosh-darned good With just one bite--you'll grin. Because her secret recipe Contains a secret drop Of some Hawaiian Kahlua That's sure to make you hop! Now something alcoholic Isn't something you often see As ingredients in cookies But they sure taste good to me! And oh, the strange reactions Her cookies have had on The populace in general I now will speak upon These cookies have been know to warm The worst curmudgeon's heart And folks with tempers flaming rage Calm feelings do impart. They could melt the ice on 10th Street Make NC summers humidity-free And cause marauding hurricanes Turn back out into the sea! Rising waters sink back down When her cookies are around And there's are reliable rumour They've broke the speed of sound! So you can see these cookies Are quite extraordinary-- And the word of advice I give to you Is make some now, and hurry! Ta Da! --Mbo
