Subject: Lyr Req: THE CATTLE CALL (Eddy Arnold)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 26 Oct 19 - 11:19 AM

These words are a bit different from what Slim Whitman sang. For one thing, the cowboy is referred to in third person:

THE CATTLE CALL
Words and music by Tex Owens
As recorded by Eddy Arnold and his Tennessee Plowboys, 1946. (Bluebird 33-0527-A)

YODEL

The cattle are prowlin'.
Coyotes are howlin'
Way out where the dogies bawl.
Where spurs are a-jinglin',
A cowboy is singing
This lonesome cattle call:

YODEL

He rides in the sun
Till his day’s work is done
As he rounds up the cattle each fall.
(SHORT YODEL)
Singin’ his cattle call.

SHORT GUITAR AND STEEL GUITAR BREAK

For hours he will ride
On the range far and wide
When the night winds blow up a squall.
His heart is a feather.
In all kinds of weather,
He sings his cattle call.

YODEL

He's brown as a berry
From ridin' the prairie
And he sings with an ol’ western drawl.
SHORT YODEL
Singin’ his cattle call.

FIDDLE BREAK

YODEL

REPEAT LAST VERSE

YODEL

Eddy Arnold recorded another version accompanied by Hugo Winterhalter's Chorus and Orchestra in 1955. (RCA Victor 20-6139)

It's a cold, rainy afternoon here in the California Sierra Foothills. My friend Debi Jo stopped by and we started talking about the recording of Eddy Arnold singing "Cattle Call." How does that guy yodel like that? The visit and the song made the afternoon a whole lot more pleasant.

Here's LeAnn Rimes singing it with Eddy Arnold - listen to her yodel! When they yodel together in harmony, it's a trip to heaven.

Leaning toward a butthead interpretation is -- to say the least -- an interesting position! Maybe Spaw should be alerted to bring Cleigh O. P. over for lessons here! :>)

After taking another look, I'm leaning toward the butt-head interpretation. Not for this one, but for some of the others. Sorry.

DougR .... well it was Cattle Call, what can you say

When I was young that and Indian Love Song were among my favorites. They sure were more interesting than How Much is That Doggie in the Window and Throw Pappa from the Train. Still are.

Oh, and by the way, Joe -- maybe people asking for chords to simple songs actually reflects what someone discussed in a different thread, an upsurge in interest in folk music. We all have to start somewhere, and none of us were born knowing how to figure out chords.

Of course, maybe some butt-head is just messing with us, but if it's beginners looking for assistance, or people entering a new direction for their own music, maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt and some compassionate direction.

Actually, yodeling is easier to learn if you DO write out the syllables and go over the tune just as if you were learning actual lyrics. I think that's really the key to a skill some people think you either have or you don't. (Although I know there are many among us who wouldn't consider yodeling a skill, but a curse. I, personally, take some pride in it. But, like banjo playing, it's important to know when and where to contribute it to the musical mix.)

Thank you very much for the detective work. We will work this tune out this morning. We already know how to play and sing it. By the way, we go by "Old Time Confusion" and we have fiddle, accordion, guitar, and bass.

Well, it does make you wonder when in one day, you get flooded with requests for chords, all on common songs. Many had been posted here already, in fact. It's nice to be helpful, and I really believe we should do that; but when you get flooded with requests all at once, it does seem that maybe somebody should have done some homework. I'm hoping our requesters will take the time to learn these songs before they ask for more - maybe even pick up a songbook or two.
Still, the batch of requests inspired Amos to write up a pretty good explanation of how to figure out basic folk chords (click here), so maybe out flood of requests has its benefits.

Subject: Lyr Add: CATTLE CALL (from Slim Whitman)^^
From: Metchosin

Cattle Call (Tex Owens)
as recorded by Slim Whitman

When the cattle are prowlin'
The coyotes are howlin'
Out where he doggies bawl
Where spurs are a jinglin'
This cowboys a singin'
A lonesome cattle call
(long yodel)

I ride in the sun
Till my days work is done
Roundin up cattle each fall
(short yodel)
Singin my cattle call

For hours I will ride
On the range far and wide
Night winds blow up a squall
I don't care what the weather
My hearts light as a feather
Singin' my cattle call.
(long yodel)

There is also one version with the lines
He's brown as a berry
From ridin' the prairie
And he sings with an old western drawl
^^
Sorry, I wouldn't know where to begin to write the yodeling part, probably someone else here can.
