Subject: Lady of Autumn ( I think)
From: TerriM
Date: 30 Jan 00 - 11:29 AM

Right then, my genial and genius-inspired playmates.. how does the rest of this go?

Lady of autumn, sing me your song
Play me your tune
Tell me I'm wrong
tell me you don't mean the things that you say
Tell me that we'll find a way

It's been driving me crazy , well alright, maybe's it's just a short walk in my case, but anyway, a big wet sloppy kiss to anyone who has the rest of the lyric.

I'll take that big wet sloppy kiss. lol
I forget who wrote it, though; I got it from Johnny Collins. I want to say John Connely; but that's not right...

MY LADY OF AUTUMN
(Dave Webber)

CH: My Lady of Autumn, sing me your song
Play me your tune; tell me I'm wrong
Tell me you don't mean the things that you say
Tell me that we'll find a way.

Your eye clear as winter, your touch fresh as spring
You weigh like the summer, free as birds on the wing
The seasons are changing, it's time you were gone
The colors of you will go on.

Fields that were golden are changing to brown
Leaves that were green now tumble to the ground
The warm sun of summer makes way for the snow
I know it's time; you must go.

The light, it is changing, the sky's overcast
Winter is here now, autumn is past
Deep in this dark world some warmth I must find
Though it's winter in the valley, it's still autumn in my mind.
^^

Peg, you did hear the group Beggars Velvet sing the song. It was on their LP 'Lady of Autumn' Dragon Records DRGN 901 (c1990). The group was made up of Dave Webber, Anni Fentiman, and Cathy and Charley Yarwood. There were also four other Webber songs on it.

Beggar's Velvet was made up of Dave Webber, his wife, Anni Fentiman, plus another couple who are no longer a couple. I once asked Dave about the name of the group, and he says beggar's velvet is a euphemism for the dust balls you find under the bed. (I refer to those as schmemfs)

Anni and Dave perform together now, with the same sort of tight harmony singing and Dave's dynamite voice. They have a web site that you can check out, and some amazing CDs. Dave writes songs "in the tradition" and they're all well done--couldn't begin to choose a "most favorite."

Johnny Collins has been a close friend of theirs for a long time, sometimes part of each others' recordings.

Joan

Sadly, the Beggar's Velvet LP "Lady of Autumn" hasn't (yet?) appeared on LP. If you want a cassette, CAMSCO (who else?) stocks it.

You mean has not yet appeared on CD, Dick? Getting old, are we? It's a lovely cassette. Lots of other good songs on it and wonderful harmonies. Kids, get yours today. Just send 2 boxtops and -- $10, Dick? -- to CAMSCO.

peg- CRASS COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO FOLLOW

CAMSCO (or Camsco Music, to be formal)is a record retailer specializing in folk music. I happen to own it, but that's not really the point. CAMSCO has been making hard-to-find folk recordings available at competitive prices for the better part of a decade. In addition to a pretty-damn-big catalog, we can get you just about any recording, US or overseas, that's in print.
You can reach CAMSCO at The Mudcat Shop or at www.camsco.com
At the Mudcat Shop, Mudcat gets a cut; if you go through camsco.com (which has a more complete list), just mention Mudcat, and Mudcat will get a cut. About the only folk recordings CAMSCO doesn't normally carry are those produced by Folk-Legacy (Sandy Paton). Not because we don't like them--FL recordings are generally superb--but because FL is also available at The Mudcat Shop, and Sandy is quite competent to sell his own wares.
Frankly (even recognizing that I have a vested interest here) I can't see why anyone would buy recordings from anyone else besides CAMSCO and Folk-Legacy. Give 'em a try!

Lady of Autumn is also on Dave and Anni's latest CD, Constant Lovers. Details at http://freespace.virgin.net/daveandanni.music/fourcds.html.

There's also an error in Pelrad's posted lyrics. "You weigh like the summer" is a mishearing of "Your way, like the summer".

ANd when he talks about it in concert, Annie pitches a fit, sulks, and carries on like she's tired of hearing about the one that got away. Then she sings an exquisite harmony to it.
And it is on the CD Constant Lovers, like Gary points out. It's only Beggar's Velvet that isn't available.
Blessings,
BArbara

LOL We have very tolerant neighbors! It's a very crowded neighborhood, and there was constantly music going on in our house, but I never heard anyone complain. Not when Jim Maghean (poor man, I never could spell his name) or Johnny Collins were singing in our living room, not when they had probably heard the same song rehearsed 9,000 times in one night, and not even when a friend and I had a showdown with our bombardes in the back yard one fine summer day.

Do you mean Bombardes? as in Catalonia? double reed oboe like? then you must be fairly deaf too ****BG*** as we carried a Giant behind a Catalan band of 12 ( Twelve) of them through narrow streets in Spain and I couldnt make the guide hear me from 2 feet away even shouting as loud as I could (and I am LOUD) Tolerant neighbours? I wish.... and Johnny can lift the slates on occasion too...as for him and Jim together, wonderful volume and Timbre too.... if wou want a good story ask him about the Towersey Lifeboat and Tea-bar.......

Wow, 12 bombardes. You must have suffered permanent hearing loss! Yes, those are the bombardes I mean. It's difficult to find a place to practice...I used to shut myself up in a supposedly soundproof concrete-walled cubicle in the university's music department, and people would come from all around to see what was making the racket. I fell in love with that racket the first time I heard it. Between that and my jenday conure (read, "really loud and shrill parrot"), I really do have permanent hearing loss!

From: Joe Offer

Pelrad has a good transcription above, but there are few parts I question. My main question is Pelrad's "You weigh like the summer." Here's my transcription from the Constant Lovers album. Any corrections, comments?

MY LADY OF AUTUMN
(Dave Webber)

CHORUS:
My Lady of Autumn, sing me your song
Play me your tune; tell me I'm wrong
Tell me you don't mean the things that you say
Tell me that we'll find a way.

Your eye clear as winter, your touch fresh as spring
Your way like the summer, free as birds on the wing
But the seasons are changing, it's time you were gone
But the colors of you will go on.

The fields that were golden are changing to brown
The leaves that were green tumble to the ground
And the warm sun of summer makes way for the snow
I know it's time; you must go.

For the light, it is changing, the sky's overcast
Winter is here now, autumn is past
And deep in this dark world some warmth I must find
Though it's winter in the valley, it's still autumn in my mind.

Thank you, Kitty - I had found the Website, but not the page with the lyrics. Here are the lyrics from the Webber-Fentiman Website, which I think we can consider to be definitive (although my transcription was pretty darn close to this):

LADY OF AUTUMN
(Dave Webber)

1.
My lady of Autumn sing me your song,
Play me your tune, tell me I'm wrong,
Tell me you don't mean the things that you say,
Tell me that we'll find a way.

2.
Your eye clear as Winter, your touch fresh as spring,
Your way like the summer, free as birds on the wing,
But the seasons are changing, it's time you were gone,
But the colours of you will go on.

3.
The fields that were golden are changing to brown,
The leaves that were green tumble to the ground,
And the warm sun of Summer makes way for the snow,
I know it's time you must go

4.
For the light it is changing the sky's overcast,
Winter is here now, Autumn is past,
And deep in this dark world some warmth I must find,
Though it's Winter in the valley, It's still Autumn in my mind.

My lady of Autumn sing me your song,
Play me your tune, tell me I'm wrong,
Tell me you don't mean the things that you say,
Tell me that we'll find a way.

Sorry Joe,
Except that.....they themselves and most other people who sing it use what you have down as verse 1 as the chorus, so it goes:

Chorus My Lady
V1 Your eye...
Chorus My Lady
V2 The fields.....
Chorus My lady
V3 For the light....
Chorus My lady
That really is the definitive version
