I wonder how the people feel that wake up in the city's streets
And realize like fingers they are numbered
And though the bottles tinkle there, glisten in the morning air
Like the bells from dreams that they've remembered
And a gutter's kingdom broken they must follow
As the garbage calls them in the early morning.

And I wonder how the lovers feel when passion mixed with promises
Of perfumed touches stay that way forever
Perhaps they know that it will change when morning comes and light begins
For love can make a night seem like forever
And love will also tell you when it's over
For love is just as frivolous as never.

The martyrs never saw their dreams cast out like lepers in the night
And there were Christs who knew but wouldn't tell them
And I say to you there has to be another kind o£ perfect sea
Another kind of wind that doesn't chill them
And another kind of laughter not forbidden.

Well, some have found the river's end and those in dungeons never will
Some have found a way to stop the bleeding
And sainthood seems to work for some
Sometimes a curse will cleanse the streets
But it really doesn't matter who you're telling
And it really doesn't matter who is listening
For the grass that covers all is slowly growing.

I was looking for the lyrics to "Sometimes I Wonder" and I do remember a line that is missing here.
